Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

Well, there is a technology called OLED being developed. a LED screen can get
made somewhat like LCD screens are now; it's claimed to be bright and offer
better off-angle viewing than LCD, but it's not ready for prime time yet.
Apparently they have a short life.

I have had problems with the driver transformer that is driven from a small
power transistor. This transformer drives the HOT.

If the HOT looses its drive, it will pull max current, and thus blow the
main power supply. It is running in a true class "C" type configuration.
Take care for this.

Try sweating very well, the leads of this driver transformer before trying
another one, in case there is a cold solder at the leads. I have had this. I
have also had a defective HV multiplier pull too much current, and reduce
the H scan.

Many people distribute a parts kit for this model of television. It
includes a dual power supply transistor in a single package, fusable power
supply resistor, and new HOT (Q502).

After replacing these parts the tv comes on but soon after it starts heating
up and the right side of the horizontal deflection starts to pull inward.
See this link to an actual picture of it in action
http://www.bass-x.com/sony.jpg (note that the dark area toward the bottom is
actually just a scan line, the camera was quick). If turned on soon after
going into protection, it will blow out all three parts.

Shooting some cold spray in the HOT area straightens the problem up quickly
for a minute. The only part left leading HV to ground in that area are some
high voltage film caps (C509, C527, C511, & C513). C511 is a large red
brick type which is probably the problem. I have also replaced D502, D503,
& D504 (damper diodes). See http://www.bass-x.com/sonyhot.jpg for a peek at
the schematic in this section. I am also putting the enitre schematic out
their if your an ambitious problem solver like me...
http://www.bass-x.com/sonymanual.jpg Lastly... I have resoldered everything
in the entire area after reading about numerous flyback solder flaws.

I guess I am looking for someone who might have run across this before and
remembers the repair. I am expecting it is probably a leaky/heat sesitive
cap, but could use some encouragement from someone who has been here if you
know what I mean.

Thanks!

Does it do this on ALL inputs? Tuner, Video, S-video?
Obviously the horizontal flyback sync pulse is getting to the system
control as the OSD is in the correct place.

It truely sounds like an isolated video signal problem, especially with
the sync part of the signal. This is why it is important to find out
if it does this on tuner, video , and s-video inputs.

Today I spent far too much time today trying to diagnose a problem I
have never seen before (On any proj. TV, for that matter...) I
thought
maybe it was just strange enough that somebody has run into it
before...

Set powers up, displays picture and sound from all inputs.
Usually
when cold (very first turned on) pix is correct on screen, then
begins
shifting to the right (takes about 10 - 30 seconds.) During the
transition,
the picture squiggles a little like a poor AFC lock on an old
directview
zenith. Once the picture is shifted about 3 inches to the right
(leaving a
black blanking bar on the left 3" of the screen) it stabilizes, and
will
play indefinitely in this condition. Convergence is correct, RASTER
is
correct, On Screen display is correct, just the video "slides to the
right" - if you have the OSD called up while picture is shifting, you
can
see the video sliding the the right, while the OSD remains in its
correct
position. Since the raster and geometry are correct, I have ruled
out a
deflection problem. I 'scoped all B+ supplys from Defl./P/S pc
board, and
they are correct & clean. I soldered any connection that looked
cracked on
the P/S/Defl PCB and convergence, as good preventive maint. and
replaced
several lytics that took excessive heat on P/S/Defl. regardless of
the fact
that they read good for ESR and capacitance. I have also sprayed
freeze on
the system control micro, jungle, and Horiz. osc. resonator - unit
does not
return to normal...

It looks like there is a phase shift in the video versus the
deflection,
but I haven't been able to tell why, since the flyback pulses are
clean,
etc...This one's got me stumped. Anyone seen this before? Any
bulletins on
this? (I don't get to work on as many Pioneers as other brands...)

I have a JVC HR-VP644U VCR (couldn't find any online manuals or database
entries for it) which has the following problem: Once a tape is in,
everything works fine. However, the tape won't eject if it's in, and if
it's out, the VCR doesn't recognize when I feed it one. If the tape is
(manually) loaded and I press eject, the tape will unload, pause, reload to
play position, and then turn off. I can turn the VCR on and use it just
fine. I have opened the machine up and can't find anything obviously
wrong--no broken pieces, dry belts, broken teeth, etc. I notice that the
switch on the side of the cassette carriage which is activated when I load
a tape doesn't seem to do anything, but I can't prove that it's broken.

Can anyone suggest a likely cause, mechanical or electronic? Would a new
cassette carriage likely fix this? After a lot of looking around and etc,
I wonder if there might be a catch in the portion of the idler mechanism
that is supposed to unload the tape. I can manually cycle the tape in and
out, but when I press the eject button, I wonder if the second half of the
eject action is either not getting triggered, or is not engaging.

Many thanks in advance.

Following an extensive Google search; trying to find a circuit diagram on
line.
Monitor appears in perfect condition; no components smoked etc. No
apparent
damage.

The unit is 'dead', CRT does not light etc. Expected to find something
straightforward such as blown AC fuse (and if blown, why?) burnt up
resistor, maybe a rectifier with obvious damage etc.

But AC input fuse, on/off switch are all OK; seemingly OK right up to the
input of the power supply section of the main circuit board where the next
component appears to be rectifier bridge

Another question; the monitor has the typical HD? 15 pin input cable. Is a
condition needed on any of the leads in that input cable in order to
signal
the monitor and therefore enable it to 'come on'?
yes, google, vga pinout

Hi Ken,

Am trying what I've been told thus far, still downloading stuff. Let me get
that done, then we can proceed. As to the "E-Bay" problem, I found out why
it wasn't working. The internet security feature of my Norton was causing
it. I turned it off for 5 minutes - as a setting allows - then went to the
E-Bay site and it works ok now. So, it is slow progress thus far.
Yep, that Coolweb search sure is a pain in the ass.

Hi Lou...

Felt a bit sorry for you; did a bit of investigating...

The troubles you're having are all related to a website
called coolsearch.com; though all disguised as phony
names - some are even random strings of gibberish.

I suspect now that spybot IS going to find them for you,
but most likely have trouble removing them. (It most
likely will remove them, but they'll come back on next
boot)

Should that happen, I have something here called cwshredder,
which will decidely destroy it completely. And after that,
Spybot (if you use the "immunize" and tea timer functions,
will prevent it from ever bothering you again)

So, if you'd care to send me an email from an address
that will accept a 200k attachment, I'll be happy to
send it to you.

Or if you'd like more advice/help/suggestions, feel free
to write, as I'm thinking this subject might not be of
too much interest to the rest of the group.

Take care.

Thanks to those who have helped. It seems to have made a difference. I'm not
finding any signs of the dastardly CWS in here now. I also found out why my
E-Bay wasn't working. My Norton Internet Security was blocking it. I have it
working now too. There are still some weird things going on, but I'm sure in
time I'll figure it out. At least I'm back to a "useable" computer!

I've learned a lot - much on my own in past years via computers and "with"
computers, but one thing is for sure - a Computer tech or whiz - I am NOT.

Thanks again to those who chimed in..... Hopefully, I can be of help (as
I've tried to be in past) regarding issues I am more proficient at - to

Trying to add a Main-in/Pre-out to a Sony amplifier:

The amplifier has an "adaptor loop" with bridged IN & OUT cinch(RCA)
connectors before the volume control.

The aim is to insert a 2-way active crossover, and resend the
high-range output to the Sony. The adaptor loop won't do since it come
before the volume control.
What will you do with the low out? I would do almost anything to use the
adaptor loop.
