There are several flavours and they do not share the same pinout!

Some 8 mm recorders have a problem that a guidingarm on the chassis will
misadjust during use. This is caused by a lockingscrew which is not good
locking.

So your old one could have that problem and the new one displays it.

If playing the old tape in your old recorder it will be all right, but if
you play a tape which you have made in the beginning you bought your old
recorder could have the same problem.

Greetings Peter

I bought a hi8 recorder to replace my regular 8mm. When replaying the
regular 8mm on the hi8, the sound cuts in and out, and there is a
slight horizontal distortion line on the bottom of the screen. Is this
normal for playing regualar 8 tapes on a hi8 camcorder?

Well we discovered the problem. Actually I'm a bit embarrassed to
relate this but I will. My son triple checked his breadboard and
assured me that everything was ok. So I took him at his word. He is
good but after almost 45 years in this business (is the power off?, ...
SURE it is....) I should have looked myself.
The schematic showed one of the inputs going through a 1K resistor to
5.0V. The junction of the gate and resistor went through a switch to
ground so that input could be pulled low when needed. The other input
of the gate has a symbol for a pulse generator to ground. He mistook
that as a direct connection to ground, effectivly grounding any signal
applied to that input. The circuit now works fine and my 15.00
Datapulse generator which I picked up at the surplus store the other
day is a keeper. I sure would like to have a manual for it though.
Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice. Lenny Stein, Barlen
Electronics.

So, if you had taken my advice and tested the ic by itself using
hardwired logic levels (ie, without any of the fruit used by the
circuit you were building), you would have solved the problem in 5
minutes. Any experienced tech should learn very quickly never to take
another persons word on oath when things don't work as they should.
They always check the circuit themselves.

Hello,

Would anyone have any pictures or illustrations showing any
battery-operated portable Telefunken cassette tape recorders from the
1960s and/or '70s?

Time to make a decision. Sell the car or the wife. I suspect
the car's trade-in value may be higher - but you haven't
given much detail on the wife for a fair valuation.

But it definitely sounds like the two are mutually
incompatible.

A difficult decision, I know. But life's not fair.

Does it only happen with the engine running? Unlikely I know, but if
so, it might be something to do with subsonic vibrations, maybe an
exhause tuning thing, or a panel vibrating. It happens in rally cars
sometimes.

I didn't catch the beginning of this thread but headaches could be a
symptom of carbon monoxide leaking into the passenger compartment. This
should be checked out immediately.

It isn't my intention to spark a debate about MTBF but one must
remember that this specification is derived from an accelerated
environmental simulation and is not therefore a real world value but
only an estimate. My point being that electrolytic capacitors are
basically self-healing and reform themselves when in use. Thus it is
expected they should hopefully last longer than the MTBF figure and
typically they do.

However in general, it can be argued that problems come about when
parts are used at their extreme limits. For instance using a 500mW
transistor to dissipate 500mW, and then placing an electrolytic
capacitor glued up against it, as we often see, is asking for trouble.
Please explain, why some idiot with a degree decides to place an
electrolytic capacitor inside the U shaped space formed by the
heatsink on a vertical output driver? This type of raging lunacy
abounds in the design of consumer equipment and too much to list!

You will no doubt agree that any device which is run at its limit
ratings will deteriorate more quickly. Conservative derating of
manufacturer specifications will result in equipment that will work
practically forever. Clearly this is counter-intuitive in a throw-away
consumer society. And yes, if well made and used conservatively, even
electrolytic capacitors can last virtually forever.

The reason why there ever was a sevice industry is because
manufacturers cut costs by cutting corners, designers make mistakes or
overlook unforseen conditions, and the equipment is not resistant
enough to user abuse. There was a time when tubes wore out and
required regular replacement but about the only tube left is the CRT
and these aren't replaced very much any more. About all that should
wear out are mechanical assemblies.

How many googleplex of cycles can one expect a digital transistor
switch to toggle before failing using a conservative under-rating?
I own equipment which still has the same ratings today it settled at
shortly after being made. The age has not hurt it a bit but I also
acquired garbage made in the past few years that is now in the dump.

Hi,

Thanks for the note. Actually, I'm not seeing them there on eBay. Are
you sure they're there?

What I'm looking for are pictures of Telefunken CASSETTE tape recorders
from the 1960s and '70s. For Telefunken products, I'm seeing
reel-to-reel on eBay but not cassette. I definitely need them to be
Telefunken and also need them to NOT be open reel. Cassette only...
and from the '60s or '70s.

Now that's more than you want, but with a little work you can refine it
down.

Jack,

I'm curious to know if you were able to find a supplier for the power
supply. If so, where, and what was the price of the supply?

Thanks in advance,

Brent
