I have to phases of power supply to my house - so three power lines, two
phases plus neutral.

I've on occasion wondered what would happen if we lost the neutral line.
It seems to me that we'd then have the voltage between the two phases
across two sets of appliances, one set attached to one phase, and the
other set attached to the other phase, with the two sets in series as a
result of their common connection to the neutral wire. Since the two sets
are unlikely to represent equal loads, the net result would be a large
overvoltage on one set of appliances.

My electrician says it's not an issue, but I can't see why.

Any thoughts?

Sylvia.
It actually happened in our house about 2 weeks ago, an overgrown bush near
the incomer was the cause. First sign of trouble was unexpected swings in
light brightness when kitchen appliances were switched on. I checked with a
DVM, and saw phase voltages to neutral shifting between 275 volts (240
nominal) and 190 volts as appliances were turned on and off. Perhaps
fortunately, at the time we didn't have any electronics energised. There was
no equipment damage at all.

Thanks Franc. I stumbled across that article when i was searching, only to
find jaycar didn't sell them anymore. I managed to get a batch of 15 EEPROMs
(pin compatible) foir <25AUD delivered so it worked out OK in the end,
however, i might grab one of those just in case i get another situation that
i don't have a pin compatible chip to replace.

Cheers.

If it's only for rare use why not use sunlight.

I presume that means you've had success with that method. We've tried
it on the odd occasion over the years (Perth) and found nary a bit
nuked after a week out in the sun. YMMV but I wouldn't be wasting my
time trying it again.

Was that direct sunlight or through the window?
