Hello newsreaders,

For a while I have been confronted with the following task which I find
quite challenging but unfortuantely didn't manage to solve it, yet.
What I want to do is to use 2-4 FPGAs (Xilinx Virtex 2 Pro) together on one
printed circuit board (PCB). They are used to process a large amount of
incoming serial data (data rates of several GHz's). My idea is to handle
that data parallel by the 2-4 FPGAs. But now there arises the problem how to
adequately split the data and how to synchronize the FPGAs among one
another, in particular?
Is it possible or first of all a realistic idea to synchronize multiple
FPGAs in the GHz range? How can this be done without much protocoll
overhead? I would like to do it without applying an extra transfer protocoll
among the FPGAs just for that purpose! Up to this date I didn't find a
proper solution, yet.
Maybe someone can give me a hint? Any ideas how to solve that problem?

Regards, Leroy Tanner
Hi Leroy,

you'll need to provide a little more information.
Where is the data comming from? In what format?
GHz is a measure of frequency, not data rate.

Current FPGAs run at up to about 500MHz system clock
rates. They tend to have LVDS I/O which reach beyond
10GBit/s per channel in the newest devices.

If you mean LVDS data, you could use one FPGA to split
the stream and then distribute it to the other FPGAs.

Kind regards,

Iwo

If they didn't think it was reliable at 1200 volts, they wouldn't rate
it such. Discretes usually have lots of margin.
ROTFLMAO!

lies, damn lies, and things salesmen put in brochures. cf rating Rdson
at 25V Tj.....or TO220 packages with 180W power ratings (and 1C/W Rthetajc)

It is rare for ANY manufacturer to tell the whole awful truth. Normally
they display only favourable characteristics, in whatever light makes
them look best, regardless of how the device will actually be used.

Depends on who "they" are - the brochurepeople; i.e. Sales clearly, would.
As confirmed by the availablity of 1200V devices in TO220 packages!!

However, There is nothing wrong with sticking two 800V devices in series -
and supply the gate of the upper device with a resistive voltage divider
backed up with capacitors to supply the gate current. The drive is via the
lower device. A'la Cascode.

IGBT's have a "buglet" in that it is possible to make them latch-up on a
rapid overcurrent, which can happen easily in an HV supply, making is safer
to series-connect MOSFET's.
why not use a 4kV IGBT? (actually, because the "little" ones tend to be
about 1,000 amps :)

1700V IGBTs are as common as all hell.

a 1200V IGBT is good in a switching app up to about 900Vdc, depending on
stray inductance and dI/dt. Many IGBT-based products self-destruct when
turning off under fault conditions, as dI/dt is often about 10x larger
than normal - although a gatedrive that uses a much larger Roff under
fault (ie desat) conditions helps a LOT (Semikron do this in their gate
driver modules). In a linear app, dI/dt should be a hell of a lot lower,
so you ought to be able to push it well over 1kV, but dont forget fault
scenarios - shorts followed by opens etc.

My tech once built me a 0-400V linear supply that ran from 900Vdc using
a 1200V 600A IGBT - for doing splat tests on very large chokes (it
allowed us to suck almost all the energy out of the HVDC bus caps whilst
supplying constant voltage across the DUT). It worked quite well, BUT
igbts are designed for switching rapidly, so can be prone to oscillation
when used in a linear mode.

The so-called CNN "survey" is NOT *scientific* and it is important to

Quite right - it is simply a summary of the results of several
different scientific surveys conducted recently (unless you consider
companies like Gallup unscientific, of course). How very unlike the
professional, impartial poll of a nationwide random selection of some
Jewish people, that came to a different (and of course far more

WHAT "DIFFERENT" CONCLUSION IS THAT, STUPID?!! The AJC survey is a poll

You could make such a first-order RC filter in several ways, but what
you have done is quite OK.

I wonder if you are sure that your component values are what you think
they are. The capacitor should not cause such a large error unless it's
damaged; you could try another one, perhaps. What sort of capacitor is
it? What is the tolerance on its value?

Another possibility is that your resistors are colour-coded and you have
mistaken the colours. If you are familiar with 4-band coding (which can
have up to six bands!) while you have five-band coded parts, it's easy
to make a mistake. Can you measure the resistor chain? You are looking
for a 2+:1 difference in value, so it should not be difficult to detect.
Just to paint the lily: If the components check out right, the problem
is somewhere in the sound card or (most likely) the software. In
science, experiments are used to test theories. In engineering, when a
theory is as well established as that of RC lowpass filters, you use the
theory to test the experiment.

Battery capacity metering is not anywhere near as simple as it appears at
first glance.
TI has some offerings that will help.

You can't simply relate voltage to usable capacity remaining, even when the
load is a simple resistor. When the load is dynamic, it's worse.

Hi All

I've never come across a thread with so many misleading diversions! The
OP doesn't need to know the capacity. He needs to know when the
*voltage* is too low to work his equipment reliably. He has a suitable
voltmeter, but it gives readings he doesn't understand, almost certainly
because of cable resistance.

Having read all the comments on this thread (and slept on it). I think that
the comment above just about sums it up. I was wanting something that
works like the battery meter on a mobile phone. That idea probably is the
best one that I can come up with, especially since they don't work too well
either. (my phone shows a full battery one minute then shuts off with a
dead battery the next.

I suppose that after all the discussion here, the best solution is to do
nothing. The voltmeter circuit does work perfectly as per it's original
design. All I wanted to do was smooth out the glitches, but it seems that
my expectations are too ambitious. Oh well. I can live with it as it is.

I tried to find something which indicated where the voltmeter was connected.
But I either missed it or it wasn't mentioned.

The Volt meter must be connected directly to the battery terminals to be a
reasonable indication of charge. Better would be to read the specific gravity
of the electrolyte, but I suspect that is too cumbersome.

If load pulsing is creating a problem, how about putting some really large
capacitors across the input to the load (at the load end of the cable) to
provide part of the surge current. That would smooth the current flow to some
degree.

Surplus Mass storage caps are available. I have about 600,000uF on one supply
in my lab. That supply pulls about 50 amperes for 200ms.

Just a suggestion. I don't know what to say about the indication that hasn't
already been said.

Excuse me? The daughters were given a primetime slot during the
Republican National Convention- it backfired, almost every commentator
expressed disgust with their bratty, airhead, rich kid demeanor- and
concluded it was a mistake to put them on. The telling aspect of this is
that George and Laura are so damned dumb they have no clue- so the
character of the children does figure into the equation.

Bush's girls were the comic relief that convention needed and I thought they
were great!

I feel Bush is the worst President this country has ever had. If we can't
persuade our opponents that he is a total failure on all fronts, that his admin
is corrupt, and that he and his party are turning this country into a future
3rd world one, despite the vast weight of facts and evidence that supports
these contentions, then of what use is bringing in his daughters. The facts
support the removal of the failure Bush, lets stick to them.

On Iraq

1. Where are WMD?

2.Where was imminent Threat?

3. Where are the tie ins between 9/11 and Iraq you said existed.

4. Bush says he would do the same war even if he knew about no WMD? This is
Bush admitting that WMD had little to do with the war.

5. Why did you do nothing about Abu Ghraib even though your admin knew about if
for about a year before the story broke? Do you really expect us to believe
that Lindie England the W. Virgina Guardswomen decided that 'be all that you
can be' was a chance to develop her skills as a dominatrix?
Where were the people in charge of this prison? What the hell were you really
up too? These pictures and this story angered our opponents and led to the
deaths of many of our troops, who is responsible?

on corruption

6.You and your party passed a partisan medicare drug reform bill that does not
allow the govt. to dicker over the price of drugs with the makers? This is
costing the tax payers an extra 150 billion! The filp side of this one is
asking Bush supporters if they squeel like pigs when they are bent over!

7. Why are the children of prominant Republicans running Iraqi rebuilding funds
when they have no experience and are screwing up costing the lives of our
troops? Who is responsible for this?

8. Who did Cheney meet with during the energy task force and what was agreed to
there?

9. Who outed that CIA Agent who's husband was saying that Saddam didn't have
any WMD?

On your broken promises

10. Where is the bipartisan govt. you promised us?

11.. Where are the 7 million new jobs you promised us?

12. Where is the big middle class tax cut you promised us?

13. Where is the funding for no child left behind?

on Terror

14. What are we doing in Iraq?

15. Why are we making more terrorists?

16. Why are we making Afganistan the Bastard Child?

And I could go on an on. We don't need the Daughters, or Laura, or even Neil!.

This Pres has been a total failure, the only magic he has is in his supporters,
and I don't claim to understand them. I can only work with facts, and the facts
are BUSH IS A FAILURE!
