Hi Julie,

Are you female?

If "she" is, "she's" probably ugly and flat-chested ;-)

You really are one of a kind. Archie Bunker on his
bad days had more class. Or Al Bundy. And nothing to
compensate.

This isn't fair. Al Bundy might be a schlub, but he's no bigot.
And since his wife broke his spirit, he doesn't really care about
the size of shape of women's chests, except to needle Marcie, and
when he's "reading" "BigUns" or going to the nudie bar.

In fact, some of us aspire to attain the heights achieved by the
likes of Al Bundy.
Right, that's why I added "and nothing to compensate", to
distinguish between them and JT.

Indeed. Which Thompson plainly is.

The above latest characteristic example of his redneck-style, sexist

anonymity is sexually unattractive), is mild compared with many of his

I don't like getting into this shit, but as it was put on FOX news,
"oh, gee, you got slapped. TFB." I won't say that because our (and
our allies) POWs received worse treatment in this and other wars
that it's ok to abuse prisoners for no reason save "we need info now
to keep others alive" - IOW, I wouldn't do it for fun, - but the
abuses were merely humiliations, AFAIK. And if they got slapped
around a bit, TFB. Any soldier that can't take a little slappin' is
a pussy. Ask you own SAS guys. Go ahead and slap one while your at
it.

These "abuses" were "humiliations" *only* BECAUSE OF SOME bs
religios crap. (sorry, hit caps lock). They couldn't even see their
faces. That's like putting a bag over the head of one to be hanged.
They should be glad they weren't caught screwing up here in the US
by the averge joe, 'cause I can guaronfuckingtee they'd wish they
were dead. These assholes have been killing and supporting those who
kill innocent civilians for many years.

interesting. The religious bullshit (IMO all religion can be thusly
described) is apparently very real for these people. That being said, its
hard to equate being forced to wank (shit, some guys pay for that :) with,
say, having your fingernails ripped out, limbs severed etc. "atrocities"
indeed. But technically still torture. Not just that, its been proven to be
more effective (and less messy so lower janitor bills :). So they beat a few
prisoners to death - I betcha more prisoners are beaten to death by guards
in US prisons.....and it never shows up on TV (not even in Europe :). Dying
in prison is hardly uncommon. Shoot a cop in just about any country and see
if you make it to prison.....

Where I tend to have issues is that many of these prisoners arent fighters,
just poor bastards in the wrong place, at the wrong time. I feel sorry for
the US grunts though - most cant speak arabic (betcha most cant even speak
good american), and probably cant tell one Iraqi from another. that must
make their job pretty hard. I have seen several pieces of TV footage where
US soldiers scream orders to Iraqis who clearly dont understand them, then
start shooting. oops. blame their bosses - if I was in charge, I would have
set up intensive arabic language schools for soldiers (pick the smart
bilingual ones) as soon as the war was OK'd, and churned out as many
communicators as possible, so every group of soldiers can have at least one
arabic speaker. by now they would have 18mths of arabic lessons.....

Its also interesting that the prison was run by a bunch of pretend soldiers
(reservists), who got F-all training and support. No wonder MI ran straight
overtop of them. As for suggestions the reservists thought up this stuff -
yeah right! As for the bad behaviour - people often behave badly when they
think they can get away with it (eg soccer hooligans, british yobs on
boozing holidays to Ibisa etc). It is funny that these guys took the photos
that are condemning them.

Cheers

Yeah. That could be a problen. At one time, at least, soldiers were
selected for special forces training based partly on language skills
or were later (strongly) encouraged to take laanguage couses. It
only makes sense. We didn't have much time to prepare - especially
after the previous emasculation of our military.
Its also interesting that the prison was run by a bunch of pretend soldiers
(reservists), who got F-all training and support. No wonder MI ran straight
overtop of them. As for suggestions the reservists thought up this stuff -

Yeah. I agree that it's kinda funny that we have those kinds of non
thinking idiots on this planet. When I was in basic training, we has
NG and AR in the same company. We all attended the same class called
Laws of land warfare. Prisoner handling was simple

Secure
segregate
speed to the rear

something like that - i forgot parts. THey covered basic geneva
convention stuff.

The important thing however was that it was stressed that a soldier
did not have to obey an unlawful order. So poor judgement as always
can bite you in the ass.

I hope we don't fuck too many innocents. I'm not going to sweat it
if we slap the shit out of a few soldiers and if we accidentally do
it to innocents, oh well, I'm sure we *accidentally* whacked a few
with our bombs, too.

You gotta stop and think, though. The communication problem. US
troops rush in and say, "Drop your friggin' guns, don't friggin'
move, sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up!" Now if I were on the
receiving end of that, I'd freeze. I don't need to understand what's
being said. That's something else they mentioned in basic. Simple
gestures and shoves get the point across when you're pointing your
M16 at the enemy.

So anyone who makes any gesture other than surrender/compliance has
got to be dealt with quick quick before the situation turns FUBAR
and they are just as stoopid as the dumbass NG troop that can't
remember his first aid or laws of land warfare.
Cheers
Terry

Great attitude. Just remember those innocent people in 911 and how
much the world hated it. Funny how most forget the innocent now.

Joking around aside, there actually exists a reason why someone who

Personally I couldn't give a fuck, because when it comes to hardware

you get some real gems of info in the noise, but not often.

Check out the real software groups, all they discuss is software. Very

I think Guy already gave one reason why he uses his real name: he gets
occasional business through Usenet.

"JQP", I personally think it would be a shame if everyone ended up
posting anonymously as you seem to advocate. I still remember when I
discovered Usenet, and my delight at finding SED and a "Winfield Hill"
posting. Not just _a_ Winfield Hill, it's the same one that
co-authored the book that helped me so much. Anyone could post a
question, and the actual *author* of the worlds greatest electronics
book would personally solve your problem for you! Amazing!

And now his grandchildren get to see "Winfield Hill supports Saddam"
when they google him, because he took time out to respond to some
worthless cretin that he should have ignored...

Guy has been nothing but a model Usenet citizen as far as I can
tell. (I remember him from my early Usenet experiences too, when I
discovered his legendary "Insult File"!). He does sometimes make the
occasional polite suggestion on ways to improve SED. They have always
seemed perfectly reasonable to me, I really don't understand why he is
getting abuse for his trouble.

One entry found for bigot.

Main Entry: bigˇot
Pronunciation: 'bi-g&t
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French, hypocrite, bigot
: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own
opinions and prejudices

In this (to me weird, probably because of the French etymology :)
dictionary sense I guess I would be called a bigot, but on this side
of the pond "bigot" refers to intolerance based on race or religion.
"Obstinate" would be the word used for strict opinions.

I am clearly NOT a bigot by the American definition. In my immediate
family: 5 Presbyterians, 4 Catholics, 3 Jews, 3 Agnostics and 1
Atheist (guess who that is ?:)

Five granddaughters, a Hispanic son-in-law, a lawyer son-in-law ;-)
two daughters very high up in the professions, one is a Chemist,
running the Phoenix City Water Laboratories; the other administrates
various Yuma County charitable organizations
<http://www.snap211.com/volunteer/>; a son who is a mechanical
engineer and a son who writes software.

Quite an assortment, eh ?:)

The above latest characteristic example of his redneck-style, sexist
bigotry (i.e. his prejuidiced implication that any female seeking
anonymity is sexually unattractive),
For some reason I never saw "Julie's" original post (aha, just
checked, "she" is permanently plonked, must be a good reason... now I
don't feel bad anymore).

I _did_ apologize for my retort, it _was_ _crude_. I got the

Absolutely! This is WAR!

But I do find that Terry Pinnell fits perfectly into the dictionary
