I ask the question generally. Would an external house
antenna be connected to electricity, on average?

Only rarely in a domestic situation.

Not true, it depends completely on where you live. Even when we
lived in the northern suburbs of Sydney, we had a masthead amp.

Where we live now, 100% of houses have MHAs coz you don't get
reception otherwise.

That is however a minority of domestic non block of flats situation.

Depends on your situation,
Nope.

drive around our town and you'll see MHAs on 97% of antennas.
And even you should have noticed that that armpit of a town
is a microscopic subset of the total domestic non block of flats
situations in the entire country.

All our channels are on UHF
And that's why mast head amps are worth having,
because of the loss in the cable with UHF.

That is however a minority of the total domestic
non block of flats situations in the entire country.

at a distance of about 30Km from the transmitter
with several lumps of terrain between.
Irrelevant to what the mast head amps are there for.

nope, a significant proportion of the population live in similar areas.

All our channels are on UHF

Not necessarily, when we lived in Berowra, and had analog TV on VHF, we
couldn't get a usable signal without a MHA even with less than 10 metres
on antenna cable.

That is however a minority of the total domestic non block of flats

There is no control by one tuning TV on and suddenly not getting
digital reception (still get analouge but not digital 7,70,72 etc).

You were the one too stupid to notice that the
7 mux was very marginal with your antenna etc.
Still using an old Antenna Thing is why does everything work perfectly
for three years. Then just goes off (the Antenna hasn't moved)

Have been considering a new Aerial

You'll have noted that channels below 6 have been excluded hence the
upswing in the spectrum that I mentioned.

Nope, because the entire UHF band is above those
in the spectrum so your original is just plain wrong.

You'll have also noted that most analogue antennae are VHF and UHF
combined. One section for VHF, one for UHF. The VHF section will have
issues, the UHF may or may not have issues. Then again, you probably
wouldn't have noticed anyway!

Recently bought USB TV Tuner: Compro Videomate U620F

Finding that only ABC and SBS is picked up with included antenna.
This is not so bad since the other channels are mostly rubbish, but I
have a few questions:

1. Do the ABC and SBS broadcast stronger signals because they are
government channels and they are required to provide a service?

Possibly

Fraid not. Our SBS was MUCH lower power than all the rest.
2. What influence does the length of the rabbit ears of indoor TV
antennas have on reception?

The bigger the better.

Nope, not with UHF channels.
3. What influence does electricity-powered signal amplification have
on reception?

Can't comment on that one.

4. Do external house antennas rely on electricity?

Only those with signal amplifiers.

5. What would be the best way to improve reception using an indoor
antenna? Antenna size/length? Electricity powered signal amplification?

Hook up to an external antenna, the house should have one.

Not necessarily one that does UHF tho.
My antenna for the loungeroom is VHF only but picks up UHF quite fine on
either analogue or digital. Don't have anything special for UHF. Line of
sight to transmitters however.

20 metres of cable can lose 5 to 6dB of signal.

And so you can find that a mast head amp does fix the
problem even when you don’t have a long run or splitters.

For the record, I was thinking, from your recent responses, that you and

with respect to the ranting and raving!!

Speed has been the same for the last 20 years to my knowledge. Philthy
just hasn't repaired enough toaster this month to pay for his meds.
