Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

I'm going on a service call next week to address an issue of AM radio
interference on a telephone line. The lady has her computer connected
to this line and it seems to keep getting bumped off especially

All the other replies seem to be addressing a voice-grade modem being
used here.

It's _not_ xDSL - is it?
If so, filtering the line to the computer (to the DSL modem) is _not_
one of The Things you want to do.

My next question has to do with all my existing equipment. I'll
probably need a tower of some sort for my antennas but first let me say
that I could care less about buying into the whole digital thing.
ISTR that in the early days of TV there were many ingenious ways that people
got signals into town, most involving a mast on a hill and a means to get
the signal down to the set. If you can find old copies of Radio Electronics
magazine you might find some ideas.

Can anyone recommend a good used desoldering station? I've been looking
around on places like Ebay, and it seems even used ones can be pretty
expensive. Weller, Pace, and Hakko seem to be the predominant brand names.
I basically need something for general electronics - TV's, VCRs, etc.
Something that can easily desolder a 64-pin IC, for example. I've been using
a desoldering wick for years, it works but the stuff is rather expensive
(and hard on the fingertips sometimes). I don't do any surface-mount work so
I wouldn't need anything for that.
Thanks for any advice.

Chris,

I'd have to recommend Hakko and recommend against Weller. No real experience
with Pace stuff.

I've had good luck with Pace, but no experience with Hakko.
Ditto thumbs down on Weller. They used to make good stuff,
but when the Cooper group took over, they instituted a flurry
of cost cutting that reduced most of their products to junk.

I still like the iron with the bulb on top, but for big IC's I'd go with an
iron with a selection of tips that size.

My 2 cents.

off an a tangent,,,,,,,,,,

Why the hell do they need a 100uF in a circuit that drives at 15.734
Khz ?

This is ridiculous, a 10 uF would be fine. THEY MUST WANT IT TO FAIL.

JURB

(yes I know about low impedance, that's why I said 10 uF and not 1 uF)

Thanks guys, the capacitor did really solved the problem. :)
This is a TX80(14") chassis of a toshiba TV
Why is this capacitor so important that it causes damage the transistor?

I have a similar prob with the same model PS790. After 5 years of
operation it started to make the clicking sound and the screen shrinks.
A technician advised to replece the flyback, but I couldn't find it.

Did you find a solution? Please help...

My question, then, is: is there a way to change the rotation easily

The alignment problem you are seeing is called 'tilt', and if you don't
have an adjustment on the service menu (maybe under Environment?) then
you can adjust it by using the tilt magnets on the yoke, or by rotating
the entire yoke assembly.

This must be a common problem- I am having it too. My kv-xbr96s weighs
about 300lbs and will not fit into my car, and even though I live in a
big city I can't find any repair shops. My set was working when
suddenly it make a slight poping sound and completed lost power. I
unplugged it for a few minutes and when I plugged it back in it made
the standard whooshing sound but no lights came on. I turned the lights
out and looked into the fins and did not see any glow at all.

I did notice a faint electronic burnt smell. Is is possible I just
burned out a fuse?

I guess my big question is what are others doing when they're set quits
on them?
Repair or put in the trash?

Thanks

Is that something a non-service person can do without causing further
problems? Would it be an expensive procedure to hire someone to do it?
One peoblem: I would have to have it done in the home.

If you call Sony directly, they can refer you to their authorized service
centre near to you.

It may be some failed parts in the horizontal output stage, high voltage
section, or main power supply. There is no way to be able to tell over an
email. The proper diagnostics has to be done in order to determine the
fault.

I'm having this same flickering on and off business with my 15-year old
Toshiba 27". It does the flickering thing and the picture flickers too.
I'm going to try some of the stuff I've seen here and at
http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/sam/tvfaq.htm and I'll let you know
how it goes.

My 256MB Fuji camera memory card I had for a year won't store

hook up via a USB cable. I went out and bought a 125MB card and
everything works like normal. Is it normal for a card to expire so soon
or did I abuse it?

Thanks
You didn't mention what kind of card it is but did you try a card slot
cleaning kit in the camera? I have SmartMedia in one camera and on
occasion certain cards can be difficult and make intermittent contact.
Cleaning the card slot and/or the contacts on the card fixes the
problem. If the card works ok in the USB reader, but not in the camera,
this sound like the problem.

It may be that the frequency of the carrier signal comung out of the VCR is
a close to one of your TV channel frequencies -- and there is some crosstalk
going on. You need to detune your VCR slightly -- there is normally a screw
adjustment at the back of the VCR to enable you to do this. After you have
done this you will have to adjust the channel on the TV that you use for VCR
playback accordingly.

Hi folks,
I'm having a problem with my video recorder. Whenever I switch to
any channel on my TV the picture is perfect. However when I switch to
channel 0 which I use for video playback there is interference on the
screen
in the form of what I can only describe as a herringbone pattern. I've
went
back to basics and set everything up again from scratch but it has made no
difference. What I can't understand is this, the lead from the outside
aerial goes into the video recorder, and the TV then receives it's feed
from
the video recorder via another lead. This means surely that there is
nothing
wrong with my aerial, otherwise I wouldn't be getting a perfect picture on
my TV. Since we can therefore assume that the aerial is OK and is
delivering
a good signal to the video, does the problem lie within the video? If that
is the case how can the signal pass through the video and provide a
perfect
picture on the TV when viewing the channels direct rather than through
channel 0 the playback channel? I've tried tuning another empty channel to
act as the playback channel but the effect is the same. Any ideas what I
can
try here? Any help appreciated.

Alex
