I agree with you, but if we are to believe that emotions are simply a
part
of physics, then what would make such a thing as boiling cats not
acceptable? Why would we not want to do such a thing? And why do they do
such things in some other parts of the world? Steve treats most people
like
dirt when he replies to them. I am not surprised. If he believes that he
has
no free will, and that his life and his thoughts are predetermined, what
reason does he have to act in any way other than what he chooses. But then
again, according to him, he does not choose, we do not have the ability to
choose and make choices. Somebody is missing something somewhere here,
because even though science can sound like it has explainations for
everything, it often falls short, and seems to run around in endless
circles
when trying to explain how and why the brain works, beyond it's physical
properties. Maybe for some people, science seems to be able to answer
these
questions, but for me and many others, it keeps falling flat on it's face.
I love science, but I also except the fact that is has it's limitations.

Many people who respect and know about science and math agree that they both
have definite limits. For example, physics has no structure to deal with
questions such as "What was it like before the big bang that created our
universe?" Science and math are both outstanding because they are among the
few (perhaps the only?) self-correcting human systems that we have
developed. If something is bogus, it will be corrected ... it's just a
matter of time. But, exemplary as they are, they are no replacement for
faith. Some folks need faith and some don't. For those who need faith,
they should not look to science and math to answer their personal issues and
they should not invoke them to sell a particular brand of faith to the
unwashed. It's disgusting to read about how many times this has been
attempted for the last couple of thousands of years. The reason that it's
disgusting is that it is almost always used as a ploy by the privileged to
advance their agendas. Education, if it ever catches on, will surpass
science and math as the true liberator of an quasi-intelligent species. Of
course, education without science and math is mostly a joke.
I think I see more intersection with philosophy than you do.
Pondering the metaphysics of wave equations is philosophy at its most
esoteric extreme until you realize that any metaphysical proposal that
will ever be made must explain how it is consistent with wave
equations.

There is faith in science, and faiths will often have to justify their
relationship to scientific discovery. The scientific method invokes
some profound tools that affect faith, like the Razor, skepticism, and
empiricism. If one's faiths are inconsistent with these same tools,
one can be left in an odd spot. I'm not as sure as I used to be that
we can keep our faith faith and our science science and ne'er the two
shall meet.

Most real scientists will not engage in arguments that are anecdotal, purely
philosophical, semantic in nature, political, or targeted by self-proclaimed
clever folks to arouse emotions among other folks. They are too smart for
that.

Newtonian physics once promised absolute predictions for any system, given
well-defined initial conditions. QM has thrown that into the garbage and
that resonates well with me and a lot of others. To ponder that our entire
miserable existence is predicted by a set of initial conditions is just not
palatable.
I just don't know that QM helps you there. All you have now is a set
of initial conditions and a roulette wheel.

You should check up on the quarterly profits of Radio Shack, you'll
see they're going down at a steady rate.
People are spending their money at the major discount department store
chains and electronic specialty shop.(stereo/home entertainment
shops.) for the plug and play componenets and those of use who are
hobbyist have HAD to go to those shiny color catalogs out of necessity
not choice.
I guess it comes down to either you want to run a electronics parts
store or you want to put out a shingle that says your one thereby
tricking the hobbyist in walking in where you can assualt them with a
sales pitch and try and convince them to buy what you do have.
I for one am sick and tired of walking into a "electronics parts
store" to find that they don't have any parts at all, just a ton of
third rate cheap components that aren't worth the cardboard box
they're packed in.

a lot of stuff on the wall and on the floor displays that has not been
disturbed for years that will end up in my coffin with me when I die.
***The money I make is in the selling of "ready made" equipment and

I guess the glory days of mass electronics experimenters and hobbyists has
come to an end, or at least it has changed a lot in the years that I have
had my store.... plus it has always been difficult to compete with all the
300 page color catalogs listing every possible variation of parts and
components..... however, many times I will have a part in local stock,
priced about the same as a catalog (sometimes more, sometimes less), and
there is no minimum shipping or wait like with a catalog mail order
firm........ I just don't have the large color catalog selection to wow the
customer.
If I were to move to another location or remodel my store, I would drop the
parts and component displays immediately and use the space for something
much more profitable.
***Radio Shack is only doing what will keep them in business with well over
5000 stores / 40,000+ employees world wide..... they must be doing something

I can remember when they actually had just about any part or component

BTW if you bury your head in corporate formula for max profits you
lose sight of the one component that guarantees sucess, customer
satisfaction.

satisfaction guaranteed repeat customers. My father kept his shop open

I'm not talking about selling components. That would be ridiculous. A
component package, maybe, but not individual components. A few good project
kits, some decent up to date books, etc. Nothing of great size or quantity
but of interest. A kind of niche in the market making them unique. You might
be surprised at the amount of interest. Then again, maybe not. They used to
do it before but stopped because of competition and lack of interest. A lot
of that competition is gone now and it would be an open market and there are
quite a few people out there who are interested. I don't think it can soley
keep the doors open but I think the interest would be there to justify the
little stock and space required. Not even the size of a single toilet
restroom which produces nothing but sh!t. Who knows. If the stores already
operate on a shoestring budget then it might just be time to call it quits.
However, if things were that bad then they'd already be gone. Who in their
right mind would keep their money invested in a failing chain? My experience
with chains is that the HQ always cries poor house as they're making fairly
decent deposits. Not as much as they used to but definitely enough. Another
problem is that customers don't want to hear from an idiot. At least someone
with interest will sound somewhat intellectual. Product won't sell itself.
Commodore, if you remember, proved this. Without knowledgable sales people
then that's what would be expected. You've read the RS bashings in here and
other threads, I'm sure. It mostly comes down to the employees.

So what you're saying is that spending about an hour, maybe 2, to show
new
employees around the store to give them a better idea of where
everything
is
(kind of) will eat into the profits enough to bury the store. It could
even
be done after hours. Then test them a day or 2 later as to where things
are.
Again, it's not rocket science. Power supplies here, AM/FM radios there,
TVs
over there. That's not that difficult nor time consuming.
As for RS itself, I don't want to see it's demise. It's an integral part
of
my electronics learning. In my opinion, I believe it could still a very
good
chain with a bit of fine tuning. It can be an electronics info center
with
books and projects as well as finished products. Perhaps a small corner
for
the electronics hobbiest and learners. This would eat into profits but
not
enough to bury the store. I guess my problem isn't the store or chain
but
the employees they hire. With unemployment at where it is today, the
market
can be competitive. A prospective employee will learn these very basics
if
it supplied them with a job. Even if it is minimum wage. You may even
see
some employees taking a serious interest in electronics. Perhaps even
purchasing some products from the corner I mentioned just to learn this
trade to have a future career. I may be dreaming but......

Since the only universe that can be shown to exist does so through

I was working at Radio Shack at the time they brought in Len Roberts to run the
company. Over the next several years, most of the veteran managers and
corporate execs were basically forced out because they wouldn't adapt to the
new focus of the company. The company now seems to have a strategy of hiring
20 year old managers to 'run' their stores. These managers only qualifications
seems to be that have proven that they can sell; not that they know about what
they are selling or even the first thing about customer service. Here is a web
site that has been around a while: radioshacksucks.com

Take a look at the site and you'll see how much the employee's hate their own
company.

Love - recognition that someone has something to help your interests

Envey - recognition that someone has something that you want for you

happy - recognition that you gained something that helped your interests
guilt - recognition that you might be harmed from doing something to

It is irrelevant why we have emotions. We have them, and there is not
much we can do about them. If something feels good we do it, taking into
account, if that makes someone else feel too bad, you might suffer net
harm from the coinsequences.

Boiling cats is simply something that I find distasteful, and I don't
see any reason or need for reprogramming this emotions to treat such an

i am looking at some of the newer Uniden offerings w/two handsets and
wonder how much/if i will gain anything over my current setup which
actually works well(900Mhz SS Vtech) these past 5yrs.
From my limited experience, I would keep what you've got if you like it. My
girlfriend's sister bought a 2.4GHz system (quite expensive although I don't
remember exactly how much) and their other 900MHz system is more reliable.

Mind you, I have a 900MHz system that works well except it's got old battery
technology in it and the (expensive) battery keeps dieing after about 12
months. I think it's time for an upgrade.

Robin

Yeah you've got a few points there, but allow me to make a few comments of
my own.....
As Dan Sofie suggests, people are more inclined to expect free service if
you only look like a hobbyist, and not a professional. If you're serious
about doing electronics repair, and you have the skill and ambition, get
yourself a business name, advertising sign (s), company logo on your
vehicle, etc, etc. The more professional your business apears, the less
people will expect freebies. You'll still run into the odd Cheap Charlie,
asking "Is that your best price?", or "Is it worth that much", in which case
you should just explain that you're merely asking for compensation for the
time, effort, and perhaps money that you invested in the job.
Yes, we live in a throw-away society. Approximately half the people that
bring stuff in for estimates, to my shop, usually tell me to keep it and
they go buy something new. The industry is dying, and any tech that tells
you otherwise is either incredibly naive or has a few bats in his/her
belfry. If you live in a highly-populated area though, and you do decent
work, you'll probably get enough customers to keep you busy for at least a
few more years. If you're in a less-populated area, you may want to branch
out into other areas, such as antique radios (an industry all to itself).
The best source for spare parts are all the old sets people are throwing
away. Drive around on a day designated for pickup of large items, or
advertise that you take old TVs and VCRs, and I guarantee you'll soon have
more old sets than you'll know what to do with. Paying people a small price
for their old sets will bring even more stuff......
Best of luck, and try not to get discouraged in these difficult times.

Hi everyone...
I will start this post with a great Thank You to all who
have taken their time to post and share their knowledge
in this forum. It's been great reading your posts!

Now, I would like to share my opinion on doing repairs on
consumer electronics.
It's seems to me that as soon as someone finds out you are
into electronics, they have a light bulb goes on in their
head... POP.... Hey!... FREE electronic servicing.
Friends and so called acquaintances and co-workers dump
all kinds of broken electronic crap at your feet expecting
instant FREE service.
When you are not thrilled at the prospect, they may offer
to actually pay up to $10 for the parts.
What is it with people.
Are we all just a bunch of cheap skates,
tight-wads, and skin flints, trying to manipulate or leverage
our relationships and friendships to see how much we
can exploit others for our own benefit.
People are delusional, when it comes to servicing electronic
appliances etc.

I usually like to tell them that their article is made in the
3rd world like Indonesia, china, Taiwan or Mexico where people
work for as low as $1.20 a day. Maybe they could ship their
broken TV or VCR or stereo to China for servicing as people in
North America want at least $20-$60 a hour. (joke)

Ah! maybe I'm too cynical.....

All that aside, I still like tinkering in Electronics for fun.
But, to hell with servicing for profit, it's a non-starter.
Vendors are impossible to deal with, they hoard information,
charge ridiculous prices for their parts (if they have them),
Use non standard fittings and fasteners, anything just to foil
you up. The whole industry is set up to re-inforce the
"throw away when broken" mentality of our consumer society.

P.S. A note to Daniel Sofie....

Thanks for your great input here....
and you are right to suggest to unskilled hobbyist's to
take their gear in for professionel servicing.
People underestimate the complexity of electronic gear,
it's like they assume its about as simple as a light switch.
Ever heard this one before.."It's probably just the fuse"

some info to add: Got one of these with an attached power supply

parallel with the 5 pin din connections. There is also a nine pin D
wired to the peltier controller board.
S/n is 4601-005-0413 which (inferring from the FAQ) that is a 5 mw
version. Has the old hybrid B 2.3 controller.

Symptoms...no Lasing

1st led(yellow) comes on faintly
4th led comes on again more brightly.

there is heat dissipated from controller....

no significan heat from laser head.

any suggestions would be appreciated.
I don't yet have docs on what the LEDs mean.

If you're willing to go inside the head or open one end of the cable,
with power off, securely attach a multimeter on DCV to the laser diode
pins 13 and 15 of the head connector. When you power it up, once the relay
clicks, there should be 1.5 to 2 V on the laser diode. (After a couple
minutes, it may jump by a few tenths of a volt indicating that the laser
has entered constant light mode which of course won't work.) This means the
LD is being powered. Power down and move the meter to TEC1 and see if it's
getting power - should initially go high and then decrease to a fairly low
steady voltage. Same for TEC2. Report back. :) The DC supply current to
the controller will peak at 4 or 5 A and then drop down to 2 or 3 A once
it's stabilized.

You should also be able to see some faint red light between the laser diode
block and the cavity block in the head from the laser diode. This indicates
that the laser diode is lasing, though not anything about its power output.

If these tests come back confirming reasonable behavior, it's probably a
laser diode or alignment problem.

CAUTION: Follow antistatic procedures and only change connections with
power off!

The best way to do it is to wire them in series.(Posite from the amp

the positive of the second speaker. The negative of the second speaker
to the negative of the amp.
Unless the speakers are identical, this will result in severe
aberrations in frequency response.

This may be a stupid question, but I just wanted to know. I have two sets of
20W speakers, if I were to plug both sets into the same slots into the
amplifier, will it give me 20 W of sound, or would it be splitting it up
between the speakers. The way that I think of it, if the amplifier can do 1
set of 100w speakers, it should be able to do 2 sets of 20's, but I could be
completely wrong. I would appreciate your input, thanks!

I haven't kept up with the latest and greatest in phones but I have a
neighbor that insisted on buying "the best" 2.4GHz when his 900MHz phone
died and every time his microwave is on it sounds like he's talking through
bubbling water. I have a 900MHz with the base sitting right beside my
microwave and have never noticed the slightest bit of interference.

I suggested that he check his microwave for leaks but it's only a few months
old so it's not likely. He may have the exception but it's something to
watch out for if you buy a new one.

actually works well(900Mhz SS Vtech) these past 5yrs. the batteries
are finally dying so have an excuse.

there is a plethora of new frequencies, with some advantages to each,
including 2.4, 2.4DSS, 2.4DEST, 5.4 in about that order of
cost/performance.

so the Question: the range maybe less on 2.4 and i do _not_ have a problem
w/interference, does it make sense to make just one step up? ALSO, does
Spread Spectrum mean "digital handset" link by definition? if yes, i
would
be going back to analog w/2.4Ghz.
