Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

~If it goes purple, do you mean it loses the green gun?
I would suspect a faulty tube.- perhaps the heater going O/c or an internal
short developing as it warms up.
Here in the UK we had many tube problems with the 29" sets, although ours
were made in France...by Philips !

I have now checked for any cold solder, but everything looks fine. The
picture is also blue tinted the first seconds when powered up. Then it
becomes normal, and after a while it starts fluctuating to purple, and
finaly its all purple tinted. Another problem is that when i push the
volume+ on remote, then volume goes directly to max.

I just aquired a Toshiba 43" rear projections television Model TP43H60
using chasis TAC9859. Upon plugging it in I hear the high voltage kick
in. All three tubes glow. But no picture. I removed the front panel
to reveal the control knobs for the flybacks. I toned them up a bit...
now I get a pictures with a horizontal line across. then after a few
seconds it scatters like a oval type shape. My thoughts since I repair

If you have any picture at all then the HOT is obviously good. What do you
mean by the pic scattering? Do you have a way of measuring the HV?

How do you know they are revelations rather than delusions?

Hi all,

I found this schematic on the web, and can't quite understand what the
TL081 op amp does. Obviously, it's some sort of ripple reducer, but
what does it do and how does it work?

The authors ISP returns errors with the 2 published email addresses
on the website.

The entire web page is here:

Thanks,

is this the model with the big heavy motor screwed to the base and has
the 4-6 wires connected to it? and some of the wires are connected to
switches mounted on the motor?
are you just after the motor wiring positions?

Try disconnecting the convergence yoke wires at the convergence correction
area of the deflection pwb. Pay attention as to which connector goes to
which plug. There are three, one for red, blue, and green. If you get a full
raster with video then it is probable the output ics have gone bad and need
replaced. The display will be distorted because the correction for
registration will not be present. Pay attention to the small value resistors
in that circuit also.

The first Poptronics article was absolutely riddled with drafting
errors. Later they brought out a lot of corrections. Have you
incorporated those corrections into your meter?

Please consider buying an EVB ESR meter. This piece of equipment is great. I
don't know what is your purpose of checking ceramic or polyester caps
because they almost never wear out. Regular ohm meter should be fine for
those.

well, personally i would add a TVS (transient Voltage Suppresser) and
maybe even a Zener to help protect that op-amp from an inrush of
voltage that would destroy the op-amp..
putting that aside.

what the op-amp is doing is simply using the inverting input signal
back to the source to cancel the effect there for, a high gain op-amp
is generally selected for this application because afterwards the
end results will be small.
this has also been noted in some doc's as an electronic/active capacitor.
personally, i wouldn't use it but that's me!

Yes, I noticed that the high voltage was pretty close to the op amp
and that a leaky cap or a sudden application or removal of the power
might cause a problem.

Thanks for commenting.

The problem with getting completely useless replies like "Oh, there
must be a store that sells it" and "Why don't you just look in the
Yellow Pages" is just that other people who read these postings will
get the feeling that the question has been answered, and I won't get
any meaningful responses.
Well, there are no more Amateur Radio store left in New York City,
believe it or not -- else why would I have posted? I have been a ham

know.
I would GREATLY prefer that you netizens would let my post die in
oblivion, without a single response, than get worthless replies. So
shut up. Unless you know where I can get N connectors locally.
Aren't there any local/regional web-based, or email-list-based
swaplists? It might pay to drop a WTB in one or more of'em.
Like me, I'm confidant that some ham in your area has a peanut-butter
jar full of'em.

Clamp diodes from the relevant points to the op-amp's supply rails would
be an advisable addition.

Hi...

It's called an so59 or so259 - my old mine forgets which, so
someone else?

Pick one up at Radio Shack or equivalent where you live...
though seeing as the can has been ripped a little you may
need a couple of washers as well.

The red wire seen sticking out of your chassis connects to
the center terminal on the new socket; the mounting itself
provides the ground.

Take care.

look at picture 2. there seems to be a metal prog/pin protruding
slightly from within the hole where the coax jack used to be.

if you are lucky, soldering a new piece of coax cable with a coax
socket on it (to plug your aerial into) may be all that is needed.
You'd solder the centre pin of the coax lead to that protrusion, and
the braid to the metal can's shielding.
And if the live chassis protection has been compromised? Maybe
unlikely given the look of this picture, but if that blocking
capacitor has shorted, you'll blow a fuse or two.

Tom

good luck, Ben

You have no vertical deflection. Bad connections, or
bad IC, these units are known for bad convergence IC's
also. Rono.
