common in cheap computers here to start with an oscillator at 14.318
MHz, which was then counted down to the NTSC color subcarrier
frequency of 3.579 MHz. 14.318 is also an integral multiple of the
horizontal and vertical sync frequencies. I see that 17.734475 is a
standard crystal frequency. Is that 4x the actual PAL frequency?

So now you're going to start a cross posted thread to rally support against

Don't even think for a minute that you are going to trash SEB the way you
trashed those Oz groups. If need be, I'll post a FAQ twice a day that tells
newbies about you.

I guess I wasn't clear enough before, so here it is again:

"Hey phil this is serious, can I talk to you for a second? This is SEB,
where there are no stupid questions. Only the occasional stupid fucking
asshole like yourself. Go fuck yourself and then drop dead you idiotic
moron. You know philthy, it's reall too bad that you don't work with high
voltages. Keep poking in those CFLs though, you may get just what you
deserve. HTH HAND FOAD"

Now shove that up your ass where you can get a good look at it.

Now go and repeat yourself again. Or if you're really feeling frisky, go
ahead and try to put a couple of words together without making a bigger ass
of yourself. Good Luck!

Medical gadgetry for some early 1900's electrotherapy quackery. Possibly
hair removal, or even an early form of TENS. Looks older than the usual
1920s violet-ray machines. We could tell more if we could see all of it,
and underneath the lid

The cloth or chamois covered pads are used to apply the treatment -
they'd be moistened beforehand. The sliding rheostat is a fine current
control, the vertical rod is the adjustable core of an induction coil,
varying the coupling between windings and thus the coarse voltage
output.

You're probably missing batteries (connected to the + / - terminals?)
and a handpiece. The handpiece would probably have stored in the gap at
top left, where the modern cable is now.

My daughter says it is an apparatus for making Frankenstein's monster.
Near enough.

Thanks. Some clarification

In the photo at http://www.box.net/shared/static/bxzjgxc5kq.jpg what
you see is all you get in terms of the mechanism. The lid to the box
is hinged fully open over to the right (the two nuts mount the handle
on the top of the lid.

I agree that the gap at the top left is a battery holder. There are
traces of leaked chemicals on the floor of this holder.

As for the possible sliding rheostat, Oldus Fartus is correct. There
is nothing that slides. However the steel strip that runs from left to
right vibrates in the vertical plane, and the brass screw on top can
be turned to control the rate of vibration.

There is no manufacturers' name anywhere, but a five digit number is
impressed into the wood between the hinges. It looks like a serial
number.

Various letters are stamped into the wood alongside some of the items
on the circuitry. I could not make any sense of them in terms of the
English language - for example alongside what I interpret as the 'On'
'Off' swivel switch bottom left.

I would take some more photos, but I seem to have lost the key that
opens the box and it is now in locked down mode. I don't want to
butcher the lock by picking it, so shall visit a locksmith after the
Easter holiday.
I have taken the liberty of cross-posting this to aus.electronics where
there are quite a few posters with many years of experience in the
field. Hopefully one of them may have the answer.

We have a similar version in our back store somewhere. I was told it is a
muscle-toning device, and you placed fingers on the 2 terminals on the
left-middle of the picture. It looks like this one had some sort of lead to
place the charge wherever you wanted, but ours didnt have any of the accessories
in the front box. Mind you, I'd better dig it out and see if there isnt
actually a compartment I havent found!

Square hole at top left of pic was the square-celled battery they used to use,
and the rod on the right is to adjust amplitude of the shock. It looks like you
can also adjust the frequency of the unit on this model; something ours didnt
have.

Yes; my understanding is it is an early version of a TENS-like machine, but
quite rudimentry. I do recall getting quite a nasty shock when elder brother
rammed the rod in while I had fingers on the terminals...arsehole!
