Without the computer, the complexity of a world-climate model is
intractible. With a computer, it's possible, and useful.

But, it's a useful tool for experts; it's no use TO YOU.
The prospect of you trying to handle a climate model, really WOULD be playing in the dark.
And you'd blame the tool. In fact, you skipped the trial phase, just went straight to
that conclusion without collecting any data at all.

The executive summary of what I wrote is that you have this idea of what
the ironclad rules of "real science" are seemingly unaware that "real
science" breaks those rules constantly, and always has.

Seems mad to focus on this particular example with exclusivity when
there are so many others. Einstein definitely didn't wait until all the
experimental evidence was in confirming the predictions of general
relativity before he began running the ball with it, extrapolating it
out and making further predictions in faith that his model was at that
time the best representation of reality.

Predictive models have to make lots of *accurate* predictions before you can have any faith in them. That is how real science works.

It's a qualification that then puts systems which operate over long
timescales where you only have one example to study, such as the climate
of a habitable planet, outside the realm of scientific inquiry a priori.
But there's no philosophical reason it should be, it's a real system
governed by real-world physical laws no different than the rise and fall
of the tides and apples falling from trees.

It would be _inconvenient_ if there were only one apple tree in the
world to study and then try to predict its behavior and life-cycle from
only that one example, but it's not the same as asking how many angels
can dance on the head of a pin.

Nature has made all sorts of things inconvenient for scientific study
like e.g. the whole pro-life vs. pro-choice debate - a single cell 1
second after conception doesn't make much sense to define as a person,
it's clearly just a single cell. but a baby 1 second before birth is
surely a person. That implies that there must have been a particular
instant of time when it transitioned from not-person to person. Which is
absurd and very inconvenient but Nature does its thing and doesn't
"care" at all.

Nature doesn't care at all how humans classify anything or that science
can't even come up with a set of universal characteristics that
unambiguously define what "life" even is that everyone can agree on.
"Real Science" doesn't even know what life is, or how to define it, much
beyond "you know it when you see it."

It's definitely inconvenient there's only one Earth's climate to study.
Nature doesn't give a fuck what's convenient for humans but it's not in
human's or science's nature to just throw up their hands and say "I dunno."

Climate Science is a misnomer, just means playing about in the dark with dodgy computer models created by code scribblers.

Controlling the weather is the very notion underpinning calls for international action to mitigate the alleged AGW disaster heading our way some time soon.

That is what we are being told we must now find a way to do.

Mark Twain had the right idea about 150 years ago when addressing many public gatherings of folk happy to pay to hear him speak.

He would sometimes ask the meeting a simple question:

" Tell me, why is it, that while everybody is always complaining about the weather - no-body ever DOES anything about it ? "

Greta Thurnberg has yet to claim that anybody has tried to kill her. The quality of the patronising abuse that is being served up here is pretty revolting, but David Hogg seems to have had to put up with worse. Jamie Allman ended up having to resign from his job as a TV host after writing a particularly disgusting tweet.

Phil hasn't worked out that controlling the weather is a day-to-day activity, and controlling climate involves getting the year-on-year averages back to where they used to be.

It's the same mistake that John Larkin makes.

The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere does make a difference to the weather, primarily by making everything a little warmer if there's more of it about, and getting it back to to where it has been for most of this inter-glacial would mean that we'd have fewer extreme weather events, and those that ewwe had would be less extreme, but that's "control" only in the broadest possible sense.

> That is what we are being told we must now find a way to do.

We know exactly what we have to do - burn less fossil carbon as fuel, and capture as much as possilbe of the CO2 produced before it can get into the atmosphere.

The easy way of getting there would be use less energy, but getting energy in other ways than burning fossil carbon would let us sustain our current life-style and population, and that's what's actually happening, if not as fast as Greta Thurnberg would like. She's probably right.

It turns out that they were doing something about it (though not all that much at the time). It took better science than they had back then to detect the changes we've managed to make by burning a lot more fossil carbon every year than they ever did.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svante_Arrhenius

who was twenty years younger than Mark Twain - had worked out how anthropogenic global warming had to work before Mark Twain had died (in 1910) but the experimental techniques that could prove he was right took quite a while to develop to the point where they could do the job.

Let's see Phil Alliosn or NT produce a line by line analysis that picks out any deviation from scientific orthodoxy.

Lol, someone else can waste their time on her rubbish if they want. And Bill's predictable ensuing bs.

She is clearly manipulated by the greenwash movement, but it's just as much a chance for her to make a career out of it. It's not one sided.

People will soon tire of her current antics, but if wise she will learn & transition to a more fact (or at least plausible claim) based approach. Whether she has the sense & sanity to do that is open to question.

When an American over the age of 30 tells you "I just want what's best
for you" there's a high probability they don't, in fact, want what's
best for you.

I think someone said something to that effect one time.

No, it takes a good grasp of a subject, determination & focussed work to get a bright future. She shows no trace of the first of those.

There won't be any "pitched battles" the only thing wingnuts and
Trumpets know how to do is shoot up synagogues and gun down children in
schools and Mexicans in Wal Marts.

One shoot-everything-that-moves massacre of civilians large enough by
some fuckhead in a MAGA hat and video of him putting rounds into
children while he shouts Trump's name to the heavens and nobody will
