I can just imaging enjoying the movie soundtrack with the PC's fans
whirring constantly in the background.
Most PC fans are blood noisy.

You just get a PC with quiet ones. Not a shred of rocket science whatever required.

I've already got 2 PCs. A desktop and a notebook. Why the fuck
would I want another Windose based PITA POS in my livingroom?

Because its a lot more convenient to use that what he listed.

Nice quiet fanless media boxes are already available for a fraction of the cost of a PC.

It costs peanuts to make a PC silent.

Peanuts hey? So what do you do Roddles? Take the fans out? LOL
Like I said, use quiet fans, fuckwit. Some are so quiet that I had to look
carefully to check if the cpu fan was actually spinning when installing the cpu
and fan in the PVR, and that was with the system open on the desktop too.

The WD TV HD Media box
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=572 costs under
$199 and plays lots of video and audio formats. Hook it up to any
USB drive (accepts up to 2 devices) and play your files from there.
USB HDD are usually very quiet too. :)

Much more flexible to have a PC that does all the recording of what you want
to watch and be able to play what you have recorded any time you like.

Most people who are reading these post already have a PC.
Then they can use that one, fuckwit.

Why would they want another one?
To give them more capability and flexibility for less cost than the device being discussed, fuckwit.

No farting around changing the media like you'd have to do with the item the OP listed.

If you've already got a PC, why buy a HT PC which is noisy,

You buy one which aint.

Give some example Roddles and stop dodging the question.
I personally use a Codegen 350XA power supply, Intel Celeron 900MHz cpu, Samsung hard drive.

Thats just two fans and they arent noisy at all.

consumes a lot of power,

Mine consumes fuck all.

Actually measured it have you?
Yep.

What power consumption figure did you get?
Varys with whether its recording or sleeping etc.

The WD HD TV media box is powered by the supplied 12v / 1.5A plugpack (18W max).
Some of us arent exactly destitute like you can can afford to run what that system above takes.

You cant ? Your problem.

Likewise the WD 1TB USB drive. That totals 36 watts maximum while in use. In reality it's most likely less.

Find me a desktop PC which consumes the same or less power while performing the same function of playing back a movie
or audio.
Doesnt have to be a desktop if you care about power, fool.

My laptop will do that fine, and takes a lot less power than that, fool.

In fact I play recorded TV on it when doing boring stuff like bottling the beer
and it will do that over wifi from the PVR for about 8 hours off the battery.

takes time to boot,

Mine doesnt and its almost never booted anyway.

Oh, a PC that doesn't take any time to be booted from a warm or cold
start. Geez, I'd like to see that.:p
The only PC mobos I know of which are quick off the mark which have
the OS on a chip are Asrocks.
You just sleep, not boot, fuckwit.

Or IOW in the case of your PC it's on all the time consuming power,
even when it's not in use?
Thanks for that completely superfluous proof that you have never ever had a fucking clue about anything at all, ever.

No surprise that you got the bums rush, right out the door onto your lard arse.

takes up a lot more space

I've got plenty of space.

Yes, and it's mainly in your air head.
Never ever could bullshit and lie its way out of a wet paper bag.

No surprise that it got the bums rush, right out the door onto its lard arse
even from the biggest sheltered workshop in the entire fucking country.

and probably needs wireless mouse to even come close to the convenience of a nice small remote control?

I use a wireless mouse anyway. And the same one across all the PCs using synergy.

Ooooooh, is that supposed to impress the masses?

I agree with that.
Also with a HTPC, it's ok when it's going ok, but sometimes you
update a driver, codec or software etc, and it becomes unstable and
you have to stuff around for ages, or one codec conflicts with
someting else or the endless other problems waiting to happen.
I like to just stick a disc into a stand alone player, press play
and watch the movie.
I dont' want to set there with a HTPC and prey that it doesnt blue
screen, overheat, or pop up with some cryptic error messages.

I'm with you. I just want to stick a disc in a press play.

You dont even have to press play if you use a PC.

So how do you play a movie?
Just set it up to play the movie auto when the disc is inserted.

I would hazard a guess and say all tape, discs etc are on the way
out shortly and all our video and audio will be on small memory
chips hi def and all

Bet you're wrong.

Certainly wrong about the "shortly" part anyway. Decades away at
least.

sounds reasonable. HD camcorders use memory chips now. and imagine if
you could replace your entire CD/DVD collection with a bunch of
memory chips? if we can imagine it I'm sure Sony/Panasonic/etc.,
engineers can as well.

Of course it's happening in places where it makes sense, e.g.
camcorders that don't need to archive any stuff, and just get
transfered to computer or disc. But the fact is that silicon memory is
still nowhere near as cheap as optical disc or magnetic storage, not
even close. And with the recent worldwide economic problems, most
memory chips makers are in big trouble with demand dropping
substantially.

Dave.

shortly in the grand scheme of things, may take a little while.

Do you remember how much double density disks were and blue ray disks
when they came out

I can recall paying $64 for a box of 10 x 3.5" floppies in the 1980's.
LOL. And I remember selling them to you. What a moron. They were only
double-density, too.

What size TV ?

I've always had some reservations about using one of the bigger mega TVs
as the only screen, essentially because what works best for the distance
from the user with one of those big TVs isnt what most want for their monitor.

And I prefer more than a single monitor too, tho I am happy with
a single mouse and keyboard for all of them simultaneousy using
synergy, even when doing some work on a foreign system etc.

A media centre PC is typically put on standby/sleep mode rather than
