Hi all,

Hopefully I'm not repeating a question asked many times before, but I
did try to search the net and found no answers.

I'm interested in logic gates, and would like to know if there are any
pieces of software out there that allows be "wire up" theoretical gates
on the screen, edit the wiring, see what happens with certain inputs,
etc. I'm not looking for a piece of software that does the wiring for
actual physical components, just something that will allow me to connect
an AND gate to a NOT, from an OR to a NAND, etc, to build up a logic
diagram.

Any ideas?

Of course, in an ideal world, free is good... ;-)

I like Logisim, free, easy to use, and cross-platform:

I don't use it much anymore, but Tina has a large library of logic gates,
including counters, shift registers, multiplexers, and decoder/drivers, and
they have useful symbols for clickable logic level switches, LED displays,
indicator lamps, and even a traffic light. I purchased their basic edition
for about $30, but they have a free demo at www.tina.com, and a fairly good
working version is available free at www.ti.com. Of course, they only have
Texas Instruments logic ICs :)

These days, I do almost all my logic with PICs, but sometimes need external
devices to drive displays, scan keyboards, analog muxing, and other
functions.

What does a printer have to do with inserting a PostScript graphic

Not that I don't have PostScript printing capability... an hp1320 does
both PCL and PS.

Who uses 'Word' on *nix?
I do. MS Word 3.0 on SCO ODT 3.2v4.2 and Word 5.1 on SCO 3.2v5.0.5.
However, I do prefer vi for anything useful.

I guess any success in reducing the memory requirements is balanced with
more features (some of which are occasionally useful!).

Yes and no. If you're actually using all those features, yes, but in general
I imagine only a single-digit percentage of all the code that makes up OO or
MSO is actually being executed during a typical editing session, and thus the
rest can be swapped out to the page file is "real" memory is needed for other
tasks. I'm not sure of the granularity of swapping in Windows vs. Linux
though -- whether it's page by page (4kB on a x86 CPU) or more like DLL by DLL
(or whatever the Linux equivalent is).
The granularity of swapping is a 4K page on both Windows and Linux, I
believe. How well an application works with swapping will vary - if
features are well separated in code then parts can be successfully
swapped out without affecting the real running speed of the application.

Sounds familiar. I made an external guide for the straight thru feed
on the 1120C to ensure squareness... particularly an issue with card
stock.
Good to know it's not just my particular printer then! Although too bad that
HP apparently hasn't improved the design much.

Haven't read the "manual" yet, but I take it, for straight through
printing of card stock, you have to snap out the duplex adapter and
snap in the regular feed??

So they say -- h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/product_pdfs/1101941.pdf
has a picture of it being used to feed stock straight-through, although I've
never actually used it for thick stock myself.

Yep. I looked over "ug.pdf" on the install CD and found it.

that was the problem. i guess i am just not up to speed on the

i saw wire and assumed it was used to wire things together.

now i am curious what a wire is for ?

It only takes a few minutes to create that sort of thing with the
Pulsonix software I use. They only have six pins so it shouldn't take
much longer in Protel.

For six pins I'd agree... but have you ever tried to make a, say, 50 pin
dual-row connector using the Pulsonix footprint wizard? It doesn't have an
option to put odd pins down one side of the connector and even pins down the
other, as far as I can tell. As I recall, the Protel footprint wizard did...
it'd be a nice addition to see that show up in Pulsonix as well.

Obligatory plug for Pulsonix: The friendly folks at WestDev sent me back a new
DLL to import PADS 2007 footprint libraries within a couple of days of my
asking for it (it previously handled PADS 2003 footprints but Mentor changed
their library file formats). That's pretty impressive...
