I have an Internet stalker problem, probably some teenager who thinks it
is fun to mess with me and screw up the groups at the same time.

I am an engineer and have been here before, and the only reason this
group got tagged is the little twit googled my name and decided to
declare war on me.
I have turned him into the abuse department with about 6 of his
outrageous mails, complete with the HTML body so they can (I hope) track
him and get his ISP to can his (or his mommies) access.

Dragging this discussion back from the trading pinciples of some companies.

I do not know about the UK but in Australia and I suspect the USA this sort
of thing is easy to find at DIY stores like Bunnings (here) or Home
Depot/Lowes (in the US) in the build your self a burgular alarm aisle.

There are at least three layman's electronic suppliers in Aus, DSE (about
equiv to Radio Shack), Jaycar (a bit better) and Altronics. All have walk
in, chose for yourself, super market type shops. Surley the UK has
equivelents.

Unfortunately Maplin have nearly turned into Rat Shack. No blister

packed resistors at three for a pound (80's pricing, it would be 3 for
five pounds now) but they've got the piles of consumer tat and now have
branches without a parts counter. Where they still do parts, their
standard stock level for any store stocked semiconductor (and that's not
many from their vastly reduced range) is 3 with long restocking
intervals. Bit awkward if you are assembling a bridge from discrete
diodes or want enough bicolour LEDs to monitor a bi-directional serial
link with handshake lines. They are better than nothing but not by a
lot. I am not aware of any other chain of retail electronic component
stockists, but hopefully someone knows of some alternatives.

Sorry, I can't help, being in the US where things like this are trivially
easy to get.

Just one thing: did someone here say that switches like this were
typically N/O rather than N/C? And that such could be used for an alarm
circuit?

Think about it: if you have a N/O switch as an alarm sensor, all the bad
guy has to do to get in is to cut it out of the circuit. There's a reason
alarm switches are normally closed.

Hard to believe a N/C reed switch wouldn't be easy to buy somewhere in
England.


N/O reed switches are the simlest to build and in alarm systems are useually

held closed by a magnet on the other side of the door etc. so it will
activate the alarm if the door opens or the wire is cut.
But like you I find it hard to believe they are hard to get.

Who knows why Tesla's funding was cut by Morgan? Morgan always had

Marconi. This also was firmly established in court! Hence there is
little doubt that he could have made his transatlantic radio system
work. Why Morgan nixed it? Who knows?

And perhaps you can explain how a turbine made of thousands of complex
blades that can snap off at high speed is somehow superior to flat
plates that can spin up to high revs without flying apart. Shouldn't
Occam's Razor "prove" the Tesla turbine is the superior device? It
seems to me you could improve the device even more by roughening the
plates with little teeth sticking out like a file has to increase the
gas friction with the plate in a simple manner without introducing the
complexity and manufacturing difficulties of blades. OR are you
saying the turbine doesn't work at all? If so, perhaps you'd better
contact all the hobbyists who have built these things for fun. They
all do seem to "work". Please explain to us all how this idea is "just
plain dumb on its face"... The thing that is "just plain dumb" and
"on it's face" is you.

Using viscosity to accelerate a fluid in dynamic compression or
expansion is inherently lossy.

Since the overall efficiency of gas turbines drops off much faster
than component efficiencies and since the Tesla compressor as well as
the Tesla turbine are inherently inefficient, the engine will never be
able to do much more than barely run.

It's curious why so many can apply partial differential equations,
BVDs and tensors to mechanics and fields but become dumb as a plate of
overcooked Ramen noodles when it comes to the Equation of Motion.
