I just wonder, why would anyone spec a 2N3055 these days anyway?

** Name a TO3 pack, general purpose, power BJT that is better, cheaper
and
readily available.

Bet you cannot.

I can't, but at only a tad more (in hundreds at once), there is the
2n3773.

** For similar quantities, the 2N3055 is under half the price of the
N3773 - plus it is far more readily available.

As a matter of interest -

devices sold by Motorola or ON Semi as being 2N3773s are not.

They are in fact MJ15003 types re-labelled.

This has been the case for the last 20 years or so.

Likely the same goes for ST brand ones as well.

OK, I went with one source of pricing only. Re the MJ15003, I saw that once,
forgot it. Weird, makes me wish the number of different part types reduced to
some wide standards. Might make it harder for fakers to play fast and loose
too if people didn't have to chase after unobtainium so often. And easier to
identify fakes if standards were fewer and better known.

** Counterfeiters target only popular type numbers they can easily sell -
so what you say above is completely and utterly ridiculous.

What makes counterfeiting EASY it that semiconductors come in a limited
range of packages and the only way to tell one type from another is by the
inked on labelling.

If fewer standards existed, and more direct sources had them, people wouldn't
need to go to sources the counterfeiters get into so easily. What really
matters is how easily people can buy and recognise the real thing.

So take your logic and extend it, you think it would be better if the
industry fragmented into diversity so extreme that no common standards exist
and no parts are easy to sell in bulk anymore? Think the counterfeiters would
be harder to avoid? I hope not. It would be worse, a paradise for shyster
brokers everywhere promising to meet impossible demands for rarity in
quantity. The simpler it is, the better.

** Got nothing to do with the number of devices which are popular - which
is quite small anyhow.

Was always so, I remember Maplin in the UK selling many of them. Before they
decided it was better to try to be Tandy/Radio Shack. If they still did,
people could just buy them there, and they would. When the chain breaks
between source and easy buyer access, that's when counterfeit gets in. It's
not the easy-te-sell stuff they want access to most anyway, it's the high-
cost stuff. If good standards get cheap with bulk direct supply, it gets hard
to operate couterfeit because it's not worth the hassle.

So take your logic and extend it,

Hah! >:)

Don't be an arse, you know that counterfeiters aren't interested in high-
volume efforts above all else. Too much work, too much traceability. They
prefer the shadows, a few hard to trace supply lines pandering to people
willing to pay high for special parts that can easily be faked. They're not
that interested in high volume low cost stuff, no matter how easy it is to
sell. Even the ones who do work on larger scales won't compete if the direct
supply is willing to meet demand.

Done arguing. No need to repeat myself. Go to those sheep, they don't like to
be kept waiting.

You've got it backwards. Phil's underwear has given fleas to 1000
sheep.

I'd scratch my head as to why you're going to E-bay

I do it at times. It's a gamble, but there are small firms dealing in surplus
bought up as inventory from unfinished commercial projects, failing
enterprise, or even just rich hobbyists who decide thast some kind of
unilateral 'group buy' makes sense.
I do buy some components on E-bay, but it tends to be items which are
unavailable through normal distribution channels. Examples: Ex-
military russian power tubes and high-voltage RF components. I have
had very good success (luck?) with these international purchases, but
would much rather buy - even for hobby purposes - from Digikey,
Mouser, or even the specialty houses like AES or RF Parts if they
stocked this sort of stuff.

One piece of pain associated with these international E-bay purchases
is that they tend to arrive via USPS registered mail which
necessitates me going to the post office when I'd rather be doing
something else. It probably beats the pain of UPS brokerage charges.
