Balham High Road (3/Nov/2000)

Certainty level: 60%

On 3 November 2000, I had just got off the bus in Balham High Road,
when I heard a group of schoolgirls shouting and laughing. One of them yelled;

"He's an idiot you know."

You can hear this on the above clip; it is followed by laughter. I am
not quite sure this is about me, which is why I have only given it
a two in three probability. I have been attacked many times with the
word "idiot", which seems to be a favourite with intellectual lightweights
who want to bring down bigger game. (Back in 1992 I was so worried by the
attacks on my intelligence that I took the test and joined Mensa......
does that make me a *clever* idiot? Never mind.)

I guess mercury, neon, and xenon gas is good for us to
put in to the ground and breath.
Mercury is naturally ocurring in the ground. Neon and Xenon are inert gasses
that can only harm living things by displacing gasses in the atmoshphere
that they need. You can breathe all the Neon and Xenon that you want to,
provided you also get enough oxygen.

A charger has no way of knowing a cell's capacity until it's measured it.
Not true. It "measures it" as soon as it gets turned on (plugged in
with batteries installed). Itdetermines the battery type, and begins its
charging session based on its decision.

Most chargers have separate "tiered" contacts, so that AA cells are charged
at a higher rate than AAA. But that's the limit of their "knowledge".
Nope. The battery type, not form factor determine the charge rate.

The internal resistance on the two sizes is the same, as is the final
charged voltage. The only thing that would change is the charge period,
and that is determined by the watchdog chip, monitoring the current and
voltage involved.

Hi all, I'd like to help out some friends on an antique motorcycle
forum that have a 6 volt regulator project. One of them built a
regulator on perfboard and posted the schematic. It has a couple of
things I'd tweak, but it works.
The main challenge: his regulator design doesn't incorporate current
limiting. Even the original relay-style mechanical regulators
incorporated current limiting, because the generators required it.
Somebody on the forum suggested the zxct1009, but it only comes in
surface mount which means we can't rejigger the existing perfboard
project to include the new chip. It would mean having a custom-
printed circuit board, and soldering techniques perhaps a little too
demanding for somebody building his first circuit -- which probably
describes a lot of the guys on the forum.
pdf of the circuit:
http://www.hydra-glide.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=1173
I've tried to find a through-hole component that fits the bill, but
can't seem to come up with anything just right. I saw the micrel
MIC5021, but it supposedly operates on 12 volts and up.
http://www.micrel.com/_PDF/mic5021.pdf
Now, perhaps they make that statement on the datasheet because the
chip actually also has a voltage doubler and the high side drive needs
that kind of voltage to turn on a mosfet, and it's possible the chip
itself will actually run on a much lower voltage. But the datasheet
doesn't say anything to this effect. Has anybody used the MIC5021 and
know if it might actually turn on at say 5 volts or perhaps know of
any other through hole chips for current sensing?
This is just a suggestion, but consider the circuit below. If the
transistors are well matched Vchg should come pretty close to Vgen/10 +
47 * 0.02 * Ibatt -- and you can jigger your component values around to
change the numbers. You'll _probably_ be able to make this work OK with
any two unmatched (but like part-number) PNP transistors, like 2N3904's,
but you'd do better to get a matched pair (DigiKey has some Zetex parts
that would do, if there are any through-hole ones).
Try this out with SPICE before you run with it: I just threw it down off
the top of my head, it's not exactly like anything I've done before nor
is it tested at all.

I've done plenty of scheming about how to do it with discretes. But
like you said, I'd still want to use a chip in the end, to get matched
transistors. Pairs and arrays, I see ony surface mount, including
zetex.
If I have to go that way, might as well use the ZXCT1009F in SOT-23
with pins 1.9 mm apart according to the diagram. Almost a tenth of an
inch, could probably solder it right onto the pads of a perfboard, eh?
Hello,

When you buy about 10 general purpose PNP transistors from one batch,
you will probably find several transistors that are within some mV
with same Ic.

Doesn't gain determine the balance in a current mirror? If so, one
would have to match for gain. I did match for gain last time I
experimented with current mirrors. I'd like to hear from the experts
about the need for this.

When you design the 2 transistor current sensor at low
bias current, self heating can be neglected and it saves you from
soldering SMD devices like NXP's BCM857. When matching is impossible,
you might add a trimmer potentiometer for nulling.

best regards,

Wim
PA3DJSwww.tetech.nl

About temperature matching. I calculate that one tenth of a degree
centigrade difference between the transistors in a mirror would add
about one percent error to the current mirror. I wouldn't want
temperature vagaries causing any more error than that. I'm wondering
if you could count on discrete transistors on a board to stay within a
tenth of a degree to each other. More fodder for the experts.
The 100 ohm base-loading resistors are there to take care of gain and
temperature match. You may still want to hand-select transistors, but
that would be gilding the lily for your application.

Hi, all !

I am setting up a computer lab for the disabled. We are looking for
equipments that might aid the disabled (mainly those who are not that
good in movement), and one of the things we are planning to get them
is trackball.

There are many types of trackballs available, unfortunately most are
made for the able-body people. I am looking for something that can be
used by the disabled with ease.

Our objective is that the trackball must be big enough, and easy
enough to be used.

One of the things we have found is the BIGTRACK trackball made by
infogrip (www.infogrip.com/product_view.asp?RecordNumber=98)

I want to know if there are other types of trackball similar or better
than the BIGTRACK that I list above?

If you have any experience on which type of trackball that will be
easy for the disabled, please share with us.

Thank you all in advance !!

It is a surprisingly difficult thing for an able bodied person to decide
what system would suit a disabled person best. The reality is that you just
don't have the necessary experience or qualifications. I have even seen
examples of so called 'disability facility consultants' get it totally
wrong.

The best solution (and probably the most impractical) would be to provide a
variety of mouse/trackball devices and allow the user to decide which one
will suit him best. Disabled people are often able to adapt to something
that although not ideal, comes close.

Many of the disabled have hands that keep shaking uncontrollably. The
limited "experiments" that I've done with them --- with all kinds and
sizes of mice/trackball/tablets --- I found out that the new crops of
"cute" mice, the one they call "ergonomic", are NOT suitable for them
at all.

That is why I searched and searched the Net for something with a
bigger ball, something that is more stable, that they can use.

That 'BIGTRACK" is the one I've found.

I post this question because I need to find out if there are any other
types of trackballs out there.

Thank you for replying.

pg,
If the disabled people who will be using this computer lab have clear
speech, consider adding speech recognition software to some or all of your
computers. This is particularly easy to do if you are using Windows Vista,
as the operating system has a fairly comprehensive Microsoft compatible
speech recognition program built right in to it. Look in the ease of access
section of the control panel. It provides multiple ways to position the
mouse including both "Show Numbers", which assigns a number to each icon on
the desktop or web page, and also a traditional Mouse grid option.

Color TV Chassis !

Add a Second Voltage Doubler for 30-60 KV !

TV's are limited to ~ 25 KV to prevent Higher Energy X-Ray generation !

Using a TV High Voltage stage makes lots of sense, and the current range
is about right too !

You would have to solve a 30 KV capacitor problem, maybe use an old
Picture Tube ?

You wouldn't have to obtain a high Voltage Transformer.

Crockroft-Walton ? circuit comes to mind.
Yukio Yano

To get a 60kV X-ray supply from TV anode supplies, take two. One at
+30kV, and one at -30kV. X-ray tube gets driven at 60kV, and the
radiation of the supplies remains low.

RIGHT. How do you propose that two be cascaded, dim bulb?

They don't get cascaded, dumb fuck.

They are both full floaters, and you tie the negative lead of one to
the positive lead of the other and ground that node. Then, you have a
plus 30kV supply and a minus 30kV supply wrt ground. The x-ray tube is a
full floater, so the +30kV and the -30kV fed into it yields 60kV at the
target.

The last X-ray supply I made was two 90kV supplies set up in this exact
manner, and it fed a Palladium target (about 20 grams) $900 X-ray tube at
180kV. It was all set into a steel cased lead lined box with oil, and an
expansion tank, and the whole thing weighed over 150Lbs, and that was
without the front end driver/control supply. It was not a flyback method
driver either. I've got pictures here somewhere I can post in abse.

That is the supply/X-ray source that is under the conveyor at your
local airport, looking at your carry on luggage.

So fuck you.

Hi, with an electronmicroscope you can check the die. If it was
destroyed due to ESD, you can see this. A "before and after" foto can

Also read what they say about AMD.

Without advanced equipment, it is very difficult to tell the cause.

What I fail to see is how the most extreme conditions in the original HV
discharge can fail to produce any immediate defect but produce a latent
defect that only becomes a full defect, at some later date, in normal
service conditions of voltages and currents.

Yes, as fine as possible. Might not be so important if you're not cleaning
