Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

Is it possible you are reloading from 'read only' media, and the
reloaded files have maintained that attribute?

Just a thought...

Hi:
This 5.1 receiver/dvd/cd (5 disk changer) player has developed a problem:
displaying 'Disk Err' when changing to play a DVD or CD. Seems to be more
temperamental with DVDs (happening about 80% of the time) and with CDs
(about 20% of the time). Receiver is about 3 yrs old, and it
occasionally did this when new, now it happens a lot. Can anyone relate
with the fix is? or some things to check out? This appears to be a
chronic problem with units of this type - Are there any 'official' ONKYO
fixes?
The laser diode and subsequent processing channels look OK - seems like
its an alignment problem when the disk is lifted onto the spindle... Any
help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John
It's a chronic problem. Read a bunch of people having problems with it not
reading DVD/CDR reliably. Google - Onkyo DR-C500 disk error and read some
for yourself.

As far as a solution goes, there may not be one. You could contact Onkyo
tech and see if there is.

The pickup either needs cleaning or replacement. Hard to get to.

They do seem to pick up a layer of dust on the objective lens.

Thanks for the reply Mark. Could you give me an idea where the pickup

I think I found it but not sure which phillips mechanism I have. I do
have some doc on OPU66.30. Is that the one used in these units?
Thanks

There were a run of Sharp tv`s that had a problem with the vertical ic
overheating because of poor design . Ad more heat sink does work .

I forgot to mention/ask, perhaps the tolerances that are set in the
controller software is too tight or maybe they just got it wrong. Can
the firmware be upgraded in these things?

No upgrades for this model - I checked. Like I said, it's a pain to get into
one of these. It's been a year at least since I've been into one. As best as
I can recall and from looking at the service manual, you can't even SEE the
pickup without a pretty major disassembly. There's a circuit board over the
top of the mech, and the power supply at the rear needs to come out also.
Huge PITA, courtesy of Philips. The thing is, they don't want these things
worked on once they're out of warranty - we are just expected to replace it
with another piece of crap so that we can continue to keep feeding the
Chinese army.

I'm going to try sending you via e-mail a couple graphics lifted from the
service manual.

I opened it all up and again, nothing appears to be out of wack. The lens
and mirrors are all sitting properly. The home flag on the underside of the
top cover (used to get home position on carriage) is intact as is the
white/black reference strips just rearward of the document window.

Anybody have some clues on how to trobleshoot past this point. I tried HP
support [being ever hopeful] and all they could tell me was things that I
already found in the FAQ or to 'download new software'. None of it was
useful. I'm hoping that there may be some sort of diagnostic available.

My out of warranty HP scanner died on its own a while back, so having little
to lose I opened it up and found an IC in a socket. I wedged it out and
reinserted it and it has worked ever since!

I doubt that you will be so lucky, but what the heck!

The hissing sound sounds like an electrolytic going bad.

I have a problem with monitor as follows:
When switched on at mains - on/off green indicator light cycles on for
5secs then off for 1.5 secs then repeats sequence for as long as power

The screen remains black except for slight flicker initially.
The PSU and Inverter pcb is a Frontek FLF 1542-02A and although this
looks OK from a visual inspection (no burnt components etc) so wonder
if there are any other checks that anyone can suggest - bearing in mind
that this is a home cure job not workshop.
The monitor is a 2003 model with Part No 6901830000

Probably easier to bin it and get a new one - but theres no challenge
in that.

It sounds most likely that the inverter is bad. Troubleshooting these
things is not usually possible....best to replace it. If you cannot
find the exact part, something designed for the same size monitor and
number/size of CCFL tubes will probably work...with some mechanical
adaption.

To webpa:

Thanks for the info.
Had a feeling that it would not be something simple.
Did not cost much to begin with (ex Ebay) so not worth messing around
with.
Will bin it and buy a new one - NOT Ebay.

Thanks again

Sometimes it's only the snake that keeps it running.

Do you the values of R504 and R524? The markings are gone and C432
is bad. The circuit board looks overheated under all three components.

If you switch it on now, it goes into standby, applying power via the
remote, there is a 'ping/hiss' noise from the tube, which then starts
to come through the speakers as well. This lasts a few seconds before
the TV puts itself back into standby. The screen stays steadfastly
black.

I did wonder with the pop if there would be anything visibly fried
inside, but cannot see any signs of 'explosions' or anything. :)

Having successfully repaired my VCR power supply after getting help
online (by replacing several capacitors), I wondered if I might be able
to do the same with the TV? Anyone any pointers - or ideas on what it
could be/what I should do first?

Cheers,
Colin.

don't seem to be able to find a service manual free online.

This unit is well known for the 200. or 2220 m at 200 volts cap in the
power supply going back look at the largest electroletic cap towards
the right and see if the top looks puffed up. if not check the others
But I would bet that , that is the problem
