C3 is known, but R4 is not recognable.

Can someone help me?

YES!!!......Bereschuim can help!

R4 is green-black-brown, that is 500 Ohms.

Now my question...

Do you know the value of R8?

Hypothetically, If you where only allowed to read and have 3 books
about electronics what would they be? This is pretty broad, so let's
try and keep the focus on intermediate level, or above, books with an
emphasis on analog electronics. Books on troubleshooting would be nice
too.
School assignment?

Scroggie's Foundations of Wireless and Electronics
Scroggie's Radio Laboratory Handbook
F. Langford-Smith's Radio Design Handbook

None of those books you listed seem to be to popular NSM. The first
book had 185 hits on google, the next one had 9 and the last one had 5.
Thank you for replying though.
They're classics. Scroggie is English, Langford Smith Australian. They're
way better than the TAB crap that's out there. Search on Amazon.

You might want to check the reparfaq.org site for causes related to failing
HOTs.
Components that I routinely check when I encounter a failed HOT, are all of
the components associated with the base signal of the HOT.

Be sure to review the safety precautions included in the repair site.

The Sencore LC analyzers are good for troubleshooting non-powered board
components.
You can check caps in-circuit for value and ESR. When you encounter readings
that that look suspicious, remove the cap from the board and retest.
The coax and mini-hook clips can be cumbersome for foil-side board ESR
testing, but you can substitute that cable with ordinary test leads plugged
into a BNC-to-bananna adapter attached to the LC input connector. Check
and/or adjust for zero ohms with tips shorted before you begin ESR testing.

If you can determine the pinout of the flyback/IHVT, you might be able to do
a simple check of the HV multipler section with your LC analyzer. The HV
rectifiers need a higher voltage to conduct, higher than that of the more
commonly encountered LV diodes.
The LC analyzer can also perform a basic check for winding-to-winding
leakage if you know the pinout.

The Sencore Video Analyzer units have a Horizontal Drive output for checking
the HV multiplier of flyback/IHVTs.
There are other test methods suggested in the Repairfaq.org contents.

I have a Hitachi TV model #50EX10B. I have replaced the horizontal
output transistor twice. I did just find a faulty transistor in the B+
supply that I think is part of a safety circuit (over voltage). Before
replacing with another HOT, what can I check that would keep blowing
this? All components in the immediate area check good. I have checked
the flyback windings best I could with a DMV, and don't see anything
shorted to ground. The main B+ fuse doesn't blow either. Thanks for any
feedback on this.

Losing things sucks.

I used to have a list of Sony part numbers for the different caps used
in their SMPSes, The .068 the .047 etc.

There are others, if someone can can give me those part numbers I would
appriciate it. Those little 50 volt caps are as important to have in
stock as 2SC4834s and MX0841s or 2s...

Most importantly right now is the number for the "684" cap. It's C621 I
believe in a KP43T70. Set uses an MX0842B and no matter what I don't
think C621 should read .241 on the diode scale.

Anyway as much as I'd like to recreate my list, the "684" cap is
paramount right now, it is the only thing holding up the job.

Thanks in advance and thanks for your time.

There is not much you can service, other than changing parts until you
find
the right one. From what I have read, most of the time, it is the drives
that fail in these units. The X-Box is very preparatory.

Someone brought in an X-Box for repair.

When powered up, The fan runs, I can hear the HD whirl,
but there's no video.

The "drawer" open/close button flashes green but stays red
the rest of the time. It does open and close the door and
I can hear a disc spin when I put one in there.

I checked the 3 chokes on the PCB at the video connector,
and an on board micro fuse, they are okay. Any advice ?

The plastic handle is in two pieces; the out part snaps onto the inner part.
If you remove the outer part you can tighten the (rather small) nuts holding
the handle onto the carafe.

Why just 3 books?... go to your local public library and look over a
wide selection of books on the subject. "Electronics" is such a broad
subject that there will be numerous subcatagories to chose from. Find
books that fit your area of interest and check them out.... there will
be many more than three books. As your experience and knowledge level
increases you will then be checking out more in-depth and specific
books.
Wow, it's been a long time since you'be been in a library. Back about
20 years ago, they started to treat books like inventory, if they
didn't circulate, they got shipped off to the yearly fundraising
sale to bring in the lordly sum of $.50 each.

If I go to my local branch libraries, they probably have about five
books on electronics at each one. Usually a donated copy of the ARRL
Handbook and a ten year old book on VCR repair. And if you're lucky,
The Art of Electronics and/or one of those big handbooks, like Reference
Data for Radio Engineers, in the Reference section. (Down from thirty
or forty books each when I was a kid, when they had all sorts of build
your own ham gear, TV repair books, and even a PDP-8 system manual).

But, hey, all the self help books you can eat, and even Object Oriented
Programming in Perl.

Thanks but which ARRL handbook are we talking about, they have many?
"The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications". There is a new one every
year; the 2005 edition is ISBN 0-87259-928-0 . I think some older
editions were titled "The ARRL Handbook for the Radio Amateur".

Also, does this book cover only RF stuff or is it more of a general
book about electronics?
It emphasizes RF stuff, but it also has good coverage of basic
electronics.

NSM, I didn't find a whole lot of info about Scroggie's book on
amazon.com, It's out of print, no reviews, and is not for sale but I
did find a book that list's Scroggie's book as a citation and that book
looked really good based on the "inside the book" computer scans.

The name of the book is "A Practical Introduction to Electronic
Circuits" by Martin Hartley Jones

Can anyone on this list recommend the book?
IIRC his books are quite good. The other books date back to the 1930's and
have been reprinted and re-edited many, many times since then. That should
tell you something. They're worth trying to borrow from your library.

First you want to make sure all the phase alignment coils are peaked and the transratiometric detector is properly balanced.
Then inject a circular wave about 1A P-P into TP31C and listen for feedback around the modulator. If any is found, replace
F4.

I found a copy of scroggie's book at a library about 60 miles away
through the online catalogs, maybe they can do an interlibrary transfer
or what ever it's called.

So far none of the books listed here, even AoE, are available at the
local libraries in town. I live in a podunk town of about 25,000
people, most of them are farmers, unskilled workers, or old people.
That's tough. Yes, look for those wherever you can. Also I have found
"Electronic Measurements" - Terman and Petit, sometimes useful and own some
of their books. Try Lindsay Books for reprints of old books - could be a fun
way to learn. The Radio Experimenter series could be useful.

I agree that cleaning the air intake and replacing the filter may help. I'd
also suggest making sure the carburetor intake is clean and the mixture
adjustment is set properly.

Also make sure all the linkage spring are in place too.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the mixture may be too rich (or lean) and
the engine's governor is keeping it alive.

Good luck!

Spongehead--

Recommend cleaning the air intake sponge first then let us know if the
problem still exists. I assume you have the 99 dollar Walmart mower
with no variable throttle.
