Hi,
I have one of these:

http://au.element14.com/tenma/72-10495/power-supply-2ch-30v-5a-adjustable/dp/225194701

I confirm it is linear, and fan cooled. You can hear the relays click
changing the transformer taps as the output voltage changes, and they
are heavy with huge transformer. Look reasonably well made inside.

Series / Parallel works, and the two supplies are joined by relays
internally. Does seem to track, and if you overload one supply, the
other supply voltage drops to match.

Has over current and over voltage limits, which seem to work.

Issues I have are

1) Fans are noisy, and seem to be load related rather than temperature,
and run even at idle. They speed up as soon as you apply a high load,
even if the power supply is cold.

2) The power supply forgets its serial / parallel configuration when you
remove power or turn it off.

3) The power supply always wakes up off if you lose mains / turn it off.
It should remember the last state, but doesn't.

4) We had a faulty display on one channel, but was replaced by E14
without issue.

David

**Thanks for that info. I had assumed it was an SMPS. Good to know
future repairs should be easy enough. If I can't get a 50-0-50 variant,
I'll grab one from Rockby. I can live with the limitations you mentioned.

I bit the bullet and ordered a 30-0-30 power supply from Rockby:

https://www.rockby.com.au/CatresultsSql_12.cfm?select=20&subcode=229&offset=21&stock_no=42344

Yes, I know I should have bought a 50-0-50, but they are almost
impossible to obtain in Australia (at sane prices) and quite difficult
overseas. Anyway, the Rockby one is the same as the one available from
Element14, at a similar price, but is rated at 5 Amps instead of 3 Amps.
A good deal IMO. I’ve had a very brief play with it so far and it is a
bloody ripper. MUCH better than I thought. It:

• Is a linear supply.
• Uses a reasonably substantial EI transformer.
• Has relays to switch different windings on the transformer, as you
change Voltages.
• Has reasonably quiet, demand responsive fans (not temperature sensitive).
• Has a really nifty Voltage and current adjustment system, which is
reasonably quick and accurate. (10mV and 1mA steps)

The downsides:

So far, the noise claims appear to be hopelessly optimistic. I’m
measuring around 20mV p-p (under a 1.7 Amp load @ 15 Volts). I can live
with that.

Only had about 30 minutes with the thing so far, but it looks like a
good deal. Perhaps I can run two of them to obtain my 60-0-60 Volts.
Works out cheaper than buying a dedicated 60-0-60 Volt 5 Amp supply. A
bit cumbersome to adjust, but I think I can live with that.

Looks like a good piece of kit, regardless.
Is it the measured noise wide-spectrum or just ripple that is the minor
problem?
If it's mainly ripple then check the main DC filter cap ratings and do
the basic PS calcs for ripple voltage vs current. You could always add
some extra capacitance to reduce ripple. If it's just random noise you
would already know that it's not worth chasing that last mV.

** That is piss poor ripple rejection, about 40dB, assuming the total filter capacitance on the unregulated rail is about 20,00uF.

My home brew 1.2V to 12V variable supply uses an LM338K (TO3)regulator IC, 160VA toroidal and a pair of 10,000uF 40V can electros. Max DC current is 6 amps and output noise & ripple with a 3 amp load is under 1mV p-p.

**Yeah, for it's purpose, a bit of noise will not be an issue. Frankly,
the more i use this thing, the more impressed I am with it. Brilliant
value for money. To think I had considered building a replacement for
'Old Faithful' (which failed after 30-odd years).

**I agree that the noise is too high. Far higher than my old power
supply, but low enough to work for the purpose. For the record:

Main capacitance per supply comprises 3 X 2,200uF/63V.
At 30 Volts and 3.55 Amps under load, there is bugger all ripple.
At the above load, there is bursts, at approximately 2mS duration of a
dirty HF signal of approximately 200kHz. I'll speak to Rockby tomorrow.

Not all groups are as quiet as this one.

Yes, the groups reserved for medication dependant lunatics are still
doing ok.

More than those are still doing ok.

seems like usenet is on it's last legs

Has been for a long time now.

Makes your existence pretty doomed, doesn't it?

Nope.

I blame you for the demise of usenet.

Even a terminal fuckwit such as yourself should have noticed that
groups
I have never been into ever have died in the arse even more
comprehensively than the ones I have posted to.

Text groups are dying off a bit

dying at an alarming rate.

coz fuckwits prefer the prettyness of all
that html shit in "forums" - hey why get a 1.8K post when you can get it
in 300K :)

Volume wise, it has died off big time I reckon.
forums have it's place, where terminal viruses that infect the usenet
newsgroups can't exist.
I think we call it "Rod Speed" factor?! :)
Html capability is pretty handy on many subjects.
usenet still has it's place without any weirdo mods as in some forums.

Though usenet is hardly dead, its definately nothing like it used to be

*text groups only* (I stopped binaries many years ago back when disks
were not cheap as chips, though the likes of giganews does a roaring
trade so must be a high demand for binaries still - and may increase
again soon with less chance of being fucked up hte arse by george
brandis's hollywood act that will become law in about 2 weeks when the
the Gov'nr accents it)

That is a one stupid retard who talks about a liberal approach to things.
while hiding his fat bald useless conservative rotten arse behind true
libs.
True libs in libs got their testicles cut off few years ago.
It will take some time for them to grow it back or to stitch up pair of
balls from a
dead bull kangaroo. Lets hope that happens sooner than later.
Need for a separate conservative and lib party has been hundred years
overdue.
