It is <just> a LED backlight system.

The contrast figures have jumped suddenly for these new LCDs,
Contrast is generally improving, but the figures are somewhat fluffy at the

Thanks for the response Brad.
Altho' my comments are particularly about C31 they apply to other and
possibly all Australian Community TV.
I have no connection with TV except as a viewer.
C31 is available on http://www.c31.org.au (as an option - at present)

I am glad TVS has this option, as C31 does - as an option, but they are
TV.
They should all be available on TV - freedom of choice and all that.

1. I listen to the radio on the radio, watch TV on the TV, ...
I know I can use my computer for everthing via streaming etc. but I have
my preferences and I prefer TV on a TV etc.

2. I live in Melbourne and TVS is not C31 - my local "Community TV "
altho' I would not mind being able to get TVS on my TV.

3. From the site "This service requires a high speed broadband connection,
and can potentially exceed your download limit." I get C31 or free.

4. I presently receive an excellent sound and vision on C31 as well as the
other FTA stations. I will not go digital till C31 does.

5. The advertising for digital said I would get extra stations not fewer.

6. C31 was told by the previous government that they would be digital.

7. The incoming Labor Minister said that the commitment would be honoured.
I am unsure if that was a "core" or "non-core" commitment.

8. C31 is losing viewers while waiting for the government to honour their
commitment. When people go digital not all continue to access the
analogue signal from C31. Some STBs corrupt the analogue signals so
analogue loses out.

8. C31 is losing sponsors as the number of viewers drop. This will
continue
until the government honours their commitment.

9. If the government does not honour the commitment in time C31 will cease
to exist and the "nursery" service it, and other community TV stations
provide, will die with it.

10.We need community TV if only to provide a "proving ground" for people
and ideas in TV. Hands on experience, learning how to do it, and making
mistakes are the hallmarks of Community TV, and are presently supported
by the other FTA stations. The FTA stations know that they benefit from
community TV because they can pick up experienced technicians, booth
operators, on-air talent etc.

In NSW why doesn't the NSW gov. give TVS / C31 the D44 spot on the
spectrum that is underutilised now?

Sure its not SD/HD quality, the indigenous (NITV ?)station seems to be doing
ok with it.

A pox on Conroy and Kevin for not proceeding with The Rodent's plan to

And a different, subsequent pox on them for "Cleanfeed".

An on-going pox on the Liberals for spawning The Rodent.

Kev, Conroy and Co. can cram "clean feed" up their collective clacker.
That has a nice alliterative "ring" to it.

Same deal for when you need to replace your oxygen sensors - import from the US
for a fraction of the price you pay here for replacement parts. Mazda wanted
$512 for each sensor (2 required) and I bought them in from
http://www.oxygensensors.com/ for less than half the the cost, even with the
freight.

I'm toying with the idea of building a chronometer for measuring bullet speed.
Just want to get some opinions on the best type of sensors to use.
Most chronographs use "sky screens". These are just photodiodes at the bottom
of a slit so they see a small piece of sky. When a bullet passes over them,
the diode changes it's resistance slightly. Each diode in one design is
in a feedback circuit of an op-amp with AGC to take care of varying ambient
light. The op-amp outputs are squared up and then the digital circuitry is
straightforward. Mine uses a clock of 4 MHz and the screens are about 300mm
apart. Accurate to about +/- 5 feet per second under most conditions.
Cheap chronographs in Aust used to be the CHRONY brand and the base model was
around $140.

The two simplest ways are optical and microwave. Optical is cheap and
simple.
Actually, an even cheaper and simpler system was the old "Break Screen" system
where two fire wire grids were set up a known distance apart. The bullet
breaks the wire as it passes through. The disadvantage was having to replace
the wires for each shot. The advent of the sky screens rendered the break
screens obsolete.

Any thoughts?
Check the value of the local caps. for the MOSFET drivers,
I don't know about the IR parts but the last MOSFET drivers
I used (Maxim?) recommended 10u minimum. Gate drive
series resistors seem to be a (surprisingly!) contentious
subject but I suggest you try about 10R. Double (treble!)
check your PCB layout with regard to the high current paths,
ensure they have good returns directly to the PSU and that
nothing else is being affected by them.

And, like the others said, sort out your schematic - if that's
messy (and it is) chances are your board will be too.

Sounds like an interference or power supply filtering problem.

First, remove all brown glue from PCB. Then check electrolitic capcitors.

Hi, having dramas with the thermostat on our wall furnace heater, as it
doesn't cutoff after reaching the preset temp. It is a non-electronic
controlled model that just uses the knob for heat control. I've put the
meter across the terminals of the thermostat and get no continuity when it
is cold. I thought that I would get this reading when the unit was hot?
Hoping for any ideas or help, thanks.

I have an SIS 305 display card and every time the

However having said that I solved the problem by disabling
the second adapter which was in the system properties. If
I had not done so Windows would keep on bloody asking if
I want to instal drivers.

The question is why is Windows doing this every time
the machine reboots?

To this all I can say is that one slight possibility
is my motherboard having a built in AGP video card
which I am not using as I can't find the drivers for
it and am not 100% sure if, or how a built in video
card would work in Windows as far as speed and program
compatibility goes, especially for games.

TIA for any help or comment if anyone can help out here.

John

Assuming that you have not changed any hardware.. go to settings
control panel> systems> device manager, and then delete any entries
under 'display adapters'. Then restart windoze, and it should find your
video card, and install the drivers. (It will ask you for the driver
disk). After this, windoze should not ask again. This is for win98 btw.
Don't know about later versions.

rgds,

Pete.

Thanks Pedro

But I already have my display card and drivers up and running
and in good order. The problem was that AFTER I had installed
that stuff Windoze kept trying to find a display card...

This is why industry participation in teaching is such a good idea.

The two uni students working on their final year project with us
picked up Protel in a matter of hours with just a little instruction.

Thats right, with instruction. Without instruction how can you expect
someone to know how to draft up schematics? Offer the poor lad (las) some
help..
I did (all (s)he had to do was ask). See further down in the thread.

Still I doubt a student studying electronics could get through 3 years
of schooling and (probably) years of amateur interest in the subject
without seeing lots of schematics and how they should be drawn.

Wires drawn over components? IMH that's just stupid. At least he got
the left side input right side output bit correct, but that could have
been luck (50/50 chance).
