OT: Sanctions...

I don\'t understand why we are putting sanctions on Russia. THE SANCTIONS
ARE HURTING AMERICANS MORE THAN RUSSIA\'S INVASION OF UKRAINE HURT
AMERICANS. Seems lots of people want to hurt Russia more than they want to
help their own country.

Russia\'s non-aggressive response to Ukraine\'s unfair tariffs on its oil
pipes was to build oil pipes around Ukraine. This recent invasion didn\'t
even interrupt oil supply to Europe. But Europeans insist on doing so!

Jimmy Carter, known for trashing our economy (but of course it was the
other guy\'s fault), prevented us from selling wheat to Russia. Now Russia
exports wheat.

It\'s not working!

Killing 500,000 Iraqi children with sanctions is \"worth it\" according to
Madeleine Albright...

Because Russian military bombs/kills/murders unarmed civilian like you and me. That\'s hardly non-aggressive.

The Russians didn\'t have any choice. Any country under threat has to
draw the line somewhere.

Under what threat? Being driven out of another country?

Ukraine, a former Soviet puppet colony, is a democracy with an
increasingly european culture.

That is a threat to the Russian language, alphabet, culture, and
tradition of despotic mass-murdering dictators-for-life. Nostalgia for
Stalin. The Russian culture, or roughly half of it, still wants that.

Part of the price Russia will pay is brain drain. That will make the
rest of the population yet more tribal.

I wonder what China really wants to do here.

Yes, they can want and enforce that within their border. Even in the dispute eastern corner of Ukraine, if they stick to the international laws on engagement, perhaps the west would not go so far.

They have to be careful, because Ukraine is a critical path of their Belt and Road. If China is too friendly to Russia, belt might be cut and road might be blocked.

Ukraine, a former Soviet puppet colony,

Russia is taking back a small portion of the territory it gave up in the
1990s, in response to NATO expansion.

Hardly. State run media only, private media has been jailed. Opposition
parties have been jailed.

You misspelled \"Nazi\".

That is a threat to the Russian language, alphabet, culture, and
tradition of despotic mass-murdering dictators-for-life.

Everybody\'s language is threatened. English will be threatened if we don\'t
wise up. Many foreigners do not like the dollar being national currency,
either.

> Part of the price Russia will pay is brain drain.

That\'s why we have been paying Russia for taking our astronauts to the
space station, for the last 13 years. Now watch John Larkin crap on space
exploration...

The Russian government sponsors a lot of technical competitions, like in
programming. Brain drain is an interesting concept, but a brain is born
every minute.

> That will make the rest of the population yet more tribal.

They are tougher than Westerners, they might be less sophisticated, but
our population is getting really weird.

Play us against the Russians and vice versa. China has everything to lose.
The problem is their language.

Ed Lee <edward.ming.lee@gmail.com> wrote:

I don\'t know about your country, but... If Russia were meddling in Mexico
or Canada, we would be there.

What???

Speaking of roads. Now that Ukraine no longer has access to the sea, it
wants to use railroads to transport grain (its major industry), but what
if Russia decides to take out its railroads...

Russian citizens are doing very well compared to many Ukrainian citizens
(gas prices have dropped), including the millions who have left. Too bad
their leaders are too stupid to make a deal.

I\'m not a fan of the New York Times. I canceled my subscription, so my
wife signed up for hers. So here it is.

But today\'s section 1 is really good. It\'s mostly about Putin and is
detailed and, for the NYT, shockingly balanced. Worth getting.

Speaking of less advanced civilizations, I have been getting a good look

Busy intersections without streetlights or stop signs... And it snows
there!

I\'m pretty sure Ukraine is full of natural resources, but Russia looks
more advanced, so where is the money going...

Russia allegedly pulled back a bit, before taking out fuel depots. For sure,
Russia is not going rampant like the reactionary warmongers say, but I have a
hunch it might be very limited. Like maybe they will bring Ukraine to its
knees (where it should be already) without destroying its capital city.

Bombing its railroads would be a killer, without injury or death.

This must be after ww2 where the US bombed two cities with nukies and
fire bombed another city that I believe killed more civilians than the
nukes did in Japan.
