sounds reasonable. HD camcorders use memory chips now. and imagine if
you could replace your entire CD/DVD collection with a bunch of memory
chips? if we can imagine it I'm sure Sony/Panasonic/etc., engineers can
as well.

Certainly wrong about the "shortly" part anyway. Decades away at least.

Of course it's happening in places where it makes sense, e.g. camcorders
that don't need to archive any stuff, and just get transfered to computer or
disc. But the fact is that silicon memory is still nowhere near as cheap as
optical disc or magnetic storage, not even close. And with the recent
worldwide economic problems, most memory chips makers are in big trouble
with demand dropping substantially.

Oh? And how long did it take for DVDs to replace video tapes for domestic use?

I can recall paying $64 for a box of 10 x 3.5" floppies in the 1980's.

BluRay is a rip off. And for that money, I'd get a decent custom-built
Desktop PC and use it as a media centre PC.

Yes, I have a Sony Vaio (VGN-AR) laptop with 17" 1080p, inbuilt TV tuner,
Blu-ray burner (so I can record!) and HDMI output. Battery barely lasts an hour
though.

Maybe, but I don't think many families gather around the lounge-room PC to watch
a movie together.

Yes, I know. I was just pointing out that the battery isn't very powerful.
