New test for Coronavirus

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued emergency authorization Saturday for a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) test kit made by Cepheid Inc. that can yield results in a matter of hours instead of days.

The new tool is called the “Cepheid Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2 test” and will be made available to the public by the end of the month.

That's nice, but it still requires a lab, etc.

"The cartridge is closed and placed into what is called a “GeneXpert machine,” which determines if the patient has been infected or not.

There are more than 23,000 automated GeneXpert systems across the globe, and almost 5,000 of them are in the U.S., Cepheid said in a statement."

It will be an improvement. By the end of the month the number of infected in the US alone will exceed 200,000 and will more likely be 500,000 or 1,000,000 given the limited testing we are doing now distorting the actual infected count.

I can't see this test having much of an impact on anything.

I do see Saturday's numbers for the US are posted on the worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/ page show a lower increase than the day before. That's huge if it is believable and not an artifact of testing or something else. That would say we are having an impact with the social distancing and limited work shutdowns.

We will see what the next few days of numbers show us. The CDC page hasn't been updated in a few days. Not sure what's up with that. They have data post dated to the date of probable infection which is very useful... if they bother to provide it.

It might not. The IASys biosensor unit that I worked on back in 1992 used a layer of monoclonal antibodies to pick as few as 4000 molecules of the specific protein that the monoclonal antibody latched onto - which could the case of the Covid-19 virus.

You just dropped 100 ul of the sample liquid on top of the 1cm cube carrying the layer of monoclonal antibody on it's top surface, which was then scanned by the machine, which told you how much of the offending protein had hit that surface.

No lab.

It was a bit clunky and mechanical, and people had already patented variations with diffraction gating built into the sensing layer that looked as if they were going to work better.

shows 4530 new cases on Thursday, 5594 on Friday and 4824 yesterday. Maybe they don't test as many people over the weekend ...

But it is a hopeful sign. Italy had similar sort of bump on the 15th March which didn't last, so it may be a bit early for too much optimism.

Even if we only slow the pace without a reverse means we would have more time before the hospitals are overwhelmed which is my main concern. The last few days the rate has actually been increasing from 8-9 days for a 10x increase to 7-8 days.

Our response to the disease has been abominable, from our leaders dragging their feet in shutting down contact to individuals intent on maintaining their lifestyle of partying. Many people don't take this seriously, in part because it is not seen as the devastating disease it is. Too many leaders downplayed the seriousness allowing people to live in denial.

We will see what the next day brings. But improved testing must be a major part of any plan to contain this disease. As shown in the town of Vo, widespread testing can be an effective means to keep the disease in check.

It is perhaps cowardly to shoot the messenger, but do you really expect
anyone to take you seriously when you reference that rag?

https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Townhall.com

Meanwhile, northern Italy's hospitals are disaster areas which are
totally overwhelmed, and soldiers are breaking down doors to collect the
bodies of people who have died alone in their flats.

It is certainly the case that some of the people who died of Corona in
Italy would otherwise have died of the common flu, or any number of
age-related problems. But that would only be a small proportion of them.

Go back to watching CNN.

Some day this thing will be analyzed properly. At present, the numbers
are all over the place and contradictory.

Link from your page:

https://www.cebm.net/global-covid-19-case-fatality-rates/

Look at those death rates!

I still think that, what with asymptomatic cases never being counted,
and sporadic testing, the actual death rates could be, well, anywhere
in that range. Or maybe less.

Yes, you are right that we don't know the "death rate". But likely it depends on many factors which is why it seems to vary so much. What we do know is that lots of people are going to die, many more than might have died if this were the flu, and more will die if we don't respond appropriately.

I don't care about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. I want to try to save lives. I think our governments have done a hugely crappy job of dealing with this.

Yeah, in fact, they are so bad at everything it seems we only have two choices. One is to overthrow the government and set up a new order. The other is to shoot ourselves in the head and be done with it.

Dang, I need guns for both options. You have the advantage on me once again!

Seems unlikely. The US had 33,546 cases on the 22nd March. If it take five days for the currently infected to become symptomatic and detectable. you've got 175,531 cases in the pipe line. That's an R0 of 5.2 which is remarkably high, so it looks as if you are finding new areas of infection as well as tracking existing infections.

"No virus re-entry" is a 14-day quarantine for anybody coming in from an uncontrolled area. That works, and has worked for centuries, when it can be enforced.

Probably not. That machine sold for about $50,000. Porton Down - the UK biowarfare lab - bought one.

The improved versions could probably be cheaper - the guy in charge, who died recently, which is a great pity, had a habit of realising complex and powerful tests in very cheap hardware, and would have loved to have been able to work up a cheaper and more compact version of the unit.

My Mo and I have something mild too. It could be C9, but
statistically it's probably something else.

Our world traveller was staying with us, and had no respiratory issues,
but did have a weird symptom that has turned out to be pretty diagnostic
for Wu 'flu: total loss of sensations of taste and smell for several
days. We didn't have that, but did have some bug sniffing around us for
a few days there.

OTOH there's a CDC study out that shows that only 10% or so of family
members quarantined with people with confirmed cases come down with it.

There's another study that claims that 50% of the UK population may have
already caught it. If so, most of whom must have gotten over it
quickly, because the percentage testing positive for the virus is much
less than that.

Cheers
