That's at least 3 orders of magnitude greater of a real threat to every
person in the country than is terrorism.

3000 people died at the WTC. Three orders of magnitude from that is 3
million. We kill about 40K people a year in car accidents.

3000 people (not all of whom were US citizens) have been killed by Islamic
terrorist attacks on the Mainland US in (shall we say 80 years). How many
have died in car accidents in that time?

That said, you are nitpicking in the same manner. More than ten times as
many people die every year as died as a result of the 11 Sep 01 attack.
That
is TEN attacks of that scale (and that was a large scale attack by
anyone's
standards) every single year. Year in, year out and accepted as a normal
risk in life.

Well, I'm an engineer. Numbers matter to me. "At least three orders of
magnitude" isn't accurate.
Well even the one year left it within a tolerance of 1 order of magnitude.
Quite accurate for some things.

The comparison of a single event to the
entire history of automobile use isn't vert logical either.
Really? Depends I suppose. We [tinw] have had quite some time now to make
car usage as safe as possible and still kill around 4x10^4 people a year.
International terrorism on CONUS is a brand new threat and only kills 3x10^3
people in five years.

Is that more logical?

Threat is very much perception driven. People perceive a greater threat from
terrorism than anything else because they have had time to acclimatise to
the every day threats which kill at least 3 orders of magnitude more people
(accidents, crime etc).

In the UK, less than 100 people have died as the result of Islamic based
terrorism (a fraction of the number who have been killed by Irish related
terrorism), yet we have a constantly heightened alert state.

Planes to the US are becoming a joke now, all because of four domestic
flights being taken over. How many flights take off each day?

Bizarre. How?
Because of all the wars you've been pointlessly starting and you want to
start more.

It's horrible. There's death and destruction on the news every night.
British lads are dying for America and all you do is tell us we're wrong
to criticise. I can assure you that the British public is getting VERY
pissed off. I was just watching 'Question Time' and there was a very
anti-US feeling from the audience.

Without a change of tack, I can see the North Atlantic Alliance falling
apart in the next couple of years.

But you have no way of knowing that.

Why else would the USA be blundering from one failure to the next ?

Even the best plans fail.

The 'best' plans?

Otherwise you wouldn't have the rather strange of allocation of
resources you see sometimes at the NIH and other federal programs.
Oh the USA ?

That's corrupt anyway ! Just don't tar us with the same brush ( yet ).

How far down the line do they have to go to be "actively trying to kill"
you? Is it the point they aim a gun at _you_ or is it the point they

Yes. As long as they have a method to follow through on the violence.
You can also actively try to kill me by doing things other than aim a
gun at me.
Ok, I realise that, I am just trying to gauge where the point that a person
becomes actively trying begins and where chest thumping rhetoric stops.

As a counter example, the US has the capacity to follow through with it's
threats therefore Iran is within it's "rights" to attempt to defend itself
in any means possible. Do you agree?

Although, as was mentioned earlier, I have never been a big exponent
of not targeting the generals. Think wars would stop a lot quicker if
the generals were also targets along with the poor grunt.
Possibly. Killing civilians and politicians has probably been the _most_
effective (if not the most acceptable) in the past.

Probably. Do you fit into any of the other categories? If you are dead, as

Some linguists even interpret the shifts in England as related to
blueblood Londoners putting on airs, and that accent subsequently
catching on in other parts of the country. I suspect this last part is a
bit of a stretch, but the whole thing is an interesting thesis. I find
it fascinating to think about how people spoke in the past, and how
language has evolved. Puts a whole new perspective in the various new
inner-city lexicons and pronunciations that have developed, even in my
lifetime.

Read "The Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson.
I've written almost everything he's written. I love his very odd
combination of American and British humor. It's kind of
over-the-top-subtle.

You'd be insane to ignore the reasons !
What reasons?

If you mean countries should adjust their policy at the whim of bombers then

The US has recognised the right of the State of Israel to exist. Why

The USA didn't give a shit about Israel until the 60s.
