Hi Mike,

Has anyone here any experiences to share about the Electra shape-based
autorouter ( http://www.connecteda.com)?
Use Google to search groups. I remember one poster in a Cadsoft Eagle
group suggesting to include the Electra with Eagle.

No comments about how cr*p all autorouters are etc. and how everything
should be done manually please ;-)
Ok, ok. I don't like autorouters, mainly because they tend to mess up
EMI and analog stuff. But if all critical paths are hand-routed and the
autorouter is then let out of the gate it can do a neat job. I have only
seen Specctra. That one was pretty good.

Just looked in windows\system and I've 170 *.EXE files and 820 *.DLLs. I

The windows\tempIE5 folder is holding 9500 items in hundreds of megabytes. I

If you want to have a look at it for free visit the Vutrax site
http://wwww.vutrax.co.uk
and download the Windows evaluation issue of Vutrax.
Then follow the Electra links or go straight to
http://www.vutrax.co.uk/electra.htm
for the instructions and download of the interface module and
the router itself. With these you get a fully functional
version of Electra for 30 days (but limited to 256 pins
by the indefinite Vutrax free issue unless you are already
a licensed Vutrax user).

OK we are biased .. we think Electra is really rather good.
At a tiny fraction of the price of the Specctra router
it is an excellent buy if you have complex layouts to do.
Some professionals use autorouters for helping to determine
a good component layout even if they route the whole thing
manually for the final product.

Convert to NTFS (if you have not already done so) so that all files will
have security attributes.

Deny execute permission to Internet Explorer to the accounts you are wanting
to block.

The only problem is that I'm not sure -- you may have to have Internet
Explorer execute permission in order to run the Windows user interface
normally. In that case you could at least deny the relevant accounts access
to the Internet Explorer shortcuts (in All Users/Start Menu and All
Users/Desktop).

Another thing you can do is monkey with the hosts file (somewhere under
system32 -- it works just like UNIX's /etc/hosts). This is a way to block
access to specific sites by deliberately associating the names with invalid
addresses.

Most of it works quite nicely with Wine on x86 boxes. Any files that
were made with MS Office work just fine under OpenOffice. The effort to
learn OpenOffice is no more than the effort to go from one version of word
to another. And if you care, the entire MS Office suite will run just
fine under Wine. So will WP, LTSpice, and Orcad PCB dos tools.

But no thanks to MS, though. They have done their level best to make sure
that it requires super human efforts to create applications that will
work with the data produced by their application software. That, to
a large degree is what the antitrust efforts against MS are all about.

....and MS has done nothing to try and work with data produced by
applications not their own. Just try and read a word perfect file under
word. (Or, dare I say native OpenOffice files...) Open Office's file
format is well documented and in plain text.

Linux systems come with literally thousands of applications built in that
will do most everything you might want to do. Want internet? Use Mozilla,
Netscape, Opera, Linx, Konqueror, ...IRC chat? Mozilla again. Photoshop? Use Gimp,
EE, ...Play DVD's, mpegs, etc? Use Xine. Music and Midi your thing? NoteEdit,
Muse, Kmid, Lilipond, ... Gotta have that Windows desktop and explorer? Use
any of a dozen Gui's that are made to look and feel the same. Gotta have
an Apple like desk top? ditto. Even NeXt is represented. How about
authoring PDF's? OpenOffice. Displaying PDF's? Xpdf, Ghostview, ... Need
a Fax? Kfax works nicely. Need to sync your palm? jpilot, kpilot...Need
true printing press quality typesetting? LaTex. Like "C", "C++", Fortran,
java? Try Gcc. Lisp, smalltalk, simula, modula, pascal, algol, cobol,
basic, pilot, are all on board, and more. Editors? Jove, Emacs, Xemacs,
Stevie, and a ton more are available. Burn CD's and DVD's? that's covered
too. Rip CD's to other formats? CDParanoia works much better than
Nero. Firewalls? A world class firewall is already built in. Voip? It
is there. The list is far too long to cover here.

Those droids make me sick.

Those f*cking DSL and BB contracts really cover their asses to the
point of not even guarantying that you can connect at all, let alone
guarantee a bandwidth.

What'd you do? Google post? It worked for me.
When I asked for a mailing address to send a complaint, they refused,

The red button and the delete button are closer than the waste
basket and there's less chance of getting a paper cut and ruining
their "No lost time accidents pizza party." Also, the idea is to
outsource the tech support and *that* company doesn't want you to
bitch to their client. You can get Cox's corp address, Jim. That's
probably how Convergys lost their DSL tech support contract with
Ameritech once they finished the marriage nuptials with SBC.

I know a Canadian (please don't barf) that did Dell tech support.
Dell doesn't do it themselves, either.

I know a guy that claims to have gotten results from the Public
Utilities Commission. You might try some of the beaureaucrats in
Phoenix, also. Cox has to go to them to renew their franchise. Case
in point: Morgantown, NC got pissed at TCI and built their own
system with SA interdictory taps. Turn you on/off and add services
from the office. Media One or Cox (I forget) in Rockford IL had to
complete so many miles of upgrade per month or get fined $100k or
$200k for each missed deadline. The city can make life hard on a
CATV company. And they pay out the ass to get those upgrades done on
time :)

Hey! Sounds like "I'll be beck" Arnie wants to run for Pres, but we
have to change the law.

Happy New Year.

an hour." This morning, the guy said that he told his girl, who told her
boss, who has to think about it, and so then I said, Oh, by the way, it's
long weekend, so time-and-a-half is $180.00/hour. Ask her what her
alternatives are!"

So, they might or might not call back.

Cheers!

Educational institutions have to teach what's out there in industry. I
don't have that choice, and frankly the admins don't either, if they
want to continue teaching.
I disagree with this when it comes to minting new Engineers, Scientists,
and CS folk. Training users to specifically to run windoze programs is
more what I expect of community colleges turning out AA degrees in word
processing.

Steve Gibson (grc.com) was a guest speaker at one of our monthlu
computer club meetings a couple years ago, and right there in front of
the whole audience, he said, Microsoft fscked up when they released w2k
and xp. Then he told us just what was wrong. Finally Mr. Bill
realized how bad thing were a few years ago and made correcting the
Windoze problems a high priority. It may take some time, but if they
don't fix the problems soon, your Linux prophecy might just come true.

And finally I'll have to remind you that Linux isn't without its
viruses, also.
Yes, but the vulnerabilities they exploit have already been fixed in
all versions of linux. Fixing it in your version of linux requires
the very tiring and taxing typing of:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Or you can use Synaptic, and do it all in Gui form.
