Has Teletext, captioning, digital radio - the usual stuff

Thanks for the tip, I grabbed one this morning and now for the first
time ever in the tiger country behind the Gold Coast have watchable
reception on shirtloads of channels . Thouroughly recommend digital
tele to anyone who's hesitating.

Anyone have any idea of the codes for a Total Control URC-4160 universal
remote?

Hmm this is interesting. I currently have pretty bad reception in the
bottom storey of the house (rabbit ears). I was thinking of mounting
another antenna on the other side of the roof but it would be a real
pain. Would a digital tele box solve this generally?

** Yes - long as some signal is there, ghosts that would make analogue TV
unmatchable have no effect.

The antenna guys are all having kittens - or fitting STBs for
customers themselves.

Last week I tried this DSE box at a place where the TV set with an indoor
antenna had no reception and was surprised to receive a perfect picture .

It seems to work smoothly though I am not very familiar with Teletext. It is
quite slow but I am not sure if that is normal for Teletext.

** That's just how it is AFAIK - the pages are transmitted in sequence
and it takes up to 90 second for a page to be repeated.

So unless the STB has a special Teletext memory store instant update is not
possible.

I hope your all right about this box. I just bought one and will try
it tonight :) out of curiosity, what is SPDIF?

Sony/Phillips Digital InterFace. It's digital audio for connecting to a
home theater receiver. Much preferred over analogue connection.

Okay so I'm home now and Im having mixed results on the box... I
sometimes receive a few channels sometimes none yet (with the antenna in
the same position) my analogue signal is showing all channels (with a
touch of blur however).. any ideas? is there something about the scan range?

I think I've worked it out... seems I only have a 44db signal on some
carriers... therefore no 7, sbs or 9... :( I should just get a signal
amplifier?

** I know where that is - used to live in Macleod.

our standard antenna picks up all stations perfectly

** But the one you are using now does not - quote:

" Hmm this is interesting. I currently have pretty bad reception in the

If the pic is noisy plus badly ghosted or affected by RF interference (
from a nearby PC for example) the digital my be intermittent .

** Were is that ( meaningless ) figure from ?????

The digital signal need only be 15 dB above noise to operate the
decoder - or about 25 dBuV.

I'm getting that figure from the Video decode "Signal Minimum" section
of the user manual.

** No such db spec in my copy of the manual.

Sure you have the G7659 "SD digital set top box " ?

............. Phil

Yep, In the technical specifications section. (about 3rd page from the back)

** On page 33 it says ... " S/N 55 dB min " which is the recovered
video signal to noise.

I asked where your 44 dB figure was from ???

okay apologies.. I meant 44% signal strength when it scans for the
channels .. well actually I didn;'t but I realise my mistake...
