Well you could pray for a bike, or you could steal one and pray for forgiveness.

I don't mean as ME or YOU there, I mean as a bank customer and the bank.

It was a joke a few years back. I just didn't want any misconceptions.

I am now in need of something to make my life easier and need a bit of help
or direction from those in the know in this group.

What I have is an acquired flat screen TV with built in speakers that the
sound output is terrible to say the least. I have used the audio output
jack (1/8" stereo) and plugged into a set of amplified computer speakers.
The sound now is of better quality but I am at Max on the TV and Max on the
speakers and volume could be a bit more.

My challenge is failing ears of so many years of all those things that
contribute to hearing loss. I do have a pair of very expensive hearing aids
that will do the job but, when I am at my computer and watching TV I really
want to give my ears a break and not wear the plugs.

What I would like is some sort of "pre-amp" if that is the correct term to
place between the TV and the Speakers so that I can boost the sound maybe
another 30%. Something simple that could be powered by a 12vdc or 5vdc
source and a small pot to boost the gain that would just plug in. Or maybe
a small board that I could build up with RS parts before they stop selling
them. Or just maybe a hint of what terminology I should be looking for to
fill the need.

From my reading this group for some time I know someone is in here that can
point me in the right direction.

Sorry for the read. Thanks in advance.

OK first I'm not an audio guy, nor do I know much about consumer
electronics. First are you sure you can get more volume from the PC speakers? (maybe they are at the limit.) (Do you have a 'scope?) But if not then an Audio amplifier is what you want. Lots of kits and such on the web. The Audio amp may be a bit over kill for what you want. (I know we bought a "sound bar" for our flat screen TV and that added ~$100 to the cost.) Re transformer. I'm guess this would be an audio transformer and not a 60/50 Hz power one.

George, I am not a sound guy either, that is my short fall. No, don't have
a scope. I am waiting on a response from RP about using a 70V transformer
from a old speaker. That seems to be the most sensible.

Thanks for the response.

Have a good day.

As George said, you connect the speaker side to the TV speakers and the
other side to the PC speakers input. You may well have to regulate the
output with a pot (100k or better).

As in this??

TV =========[ txfmr] ====== | pot| ==============={Speakers}

I know it is crude but..................

the only other option would be this;

TV =========| pot| =======[ txfmr] ==============={Speakers}

Does it really matter??

Thanks!!

Jim,

How fancy do you want it? How much weight does it need to support?

For example, you could just weld a reeeeally strong metal beam or pipe to
the rims of two manhole covers so they're held horizontal:

========= <-- manhole cover (edge view)
||
|| <-- pipe
||
||
=========

Or, make two flat X-es of pipe, put elbows on the ends of two adjacent
pipes, and put vertical pipe between matching elbows for something a
little lighter ( and a bit more legal <grin> ).

Or, find a cylindrical trash can with the right height, invert it, fasten
a tabletop to the (former) bottom, and then slice out a nice curvy
section from the side. Paint or cover with contact paper if you need
something more formal. <grin!>

Any of those fit your parameters?

Make sure the turntable mechanics and housing (including the tone arm) are
grounded to a 3 prong power plug. Also, check that your AC outlet is
properly grounded.

It is really funny to see the hypocrisy of the knee-jerk Obama-haters, as they profess their new-found solidarity with the French after trying to ban "French" from the English language and change "pommes frites" to "Freedom Fries".
