I'd scratch my head as to why you're going to E-bay

I do it at times. It's a gamble, but there are small firms dealing in surplus
bought up as inventory from unfinished commercial projects, failing
enterprise, or even just rich hobbyists who decide thast some kind of
unilateral 'group buy' makes sense.
I do buy some components on E-bay, but it tends to be items which are
unavailable through normal distribution channels. Examples: Ex-
military russian power tubes and high-voltage RF components. I have
had very good success (luck?) with these international purchases, but
would much rather buy - even for hobby purposes - from Digikey,
Mouser, or even the specialty houses like AES or RF Parts if they
stocked this sort of stuff.

One piece of pain associated with these international E-bay purchases
is that they tend to arrive via USPS registered mail which
necessitates me going to the post office when I'd rather be doing
something else. It probably beats the pain of UPS brokerage charges.

Tim.

Most of us know the old uA733, it's still sold but the quantities aren't
very encouraging. A whopping 34 pieces at Digikey. Big red flag for me.
The NE592 is non-stock in all versions and there are a few thousand
TL592. None of these were ported past SO style. That's another little
red flag.

Could high-gain video amps be on the way to Unobtania? I was hoping
there'd be some markets other than VCRs and older disk drives for them
but maybe there aren't. Any alternatives? Sure, there are fast opamps
but those cost an arm and a leg.

So, does this mean back to discrete design?

It doesn't really matter, as long as they aren't bipolar. Otherwise,
you can just turn them around if they are the wrong polarity. ;-)

Well, I tried it a few times and the polarity or color dosn't matter any

Quite apart from the problems of disposing of old CFLs, I question the
whole principle of Low Energy lighting. If you have a conventional

much
of the energy output is in the form of heat, which will help heat the
room,

and consequently will reduce the need for other heating, central or
otherwise.

That's sort of fine if you want extra heat. Often as not you don't.

If the central heating is on, then you are, by definition, needing extra
heat. The heat output from lighting will mean that the room thermostat
(or
radiator valves) will turn off that bit sooner.

Not really.

The heat from most lamps hangs around at ceiling level. It does sod all to
warm
a room.

I suggest you compare sitting in front of a 1kw bar electric fire to
switching
on ten 100w light bulbs to see how true that is.
Look at all the energy that is wasted producing light! :)

I am in the UK.

Can I build a simple device which would switch a pair of contacts on/off
when my landline phone was being used.

Am thinking of something like this. There might be a simple reed switch
(do such things still exist) which would close its contacts if there was
a current on the phone line.

Perhaps I might need to improve the situation and wind the landline (or
maybe just one of the two wires) around the reed switch.

Would something like this work?

Or can I buy a simple plug-in device for something like a fiver which
closes its contacts when the phone line is active?

Can anybody point me to a pic micro with at least 2, but preferably 3
hardware serial interfaces, if such a beast exists.

I have spent ages googling and searching the datasheets on the microchip
website, but it is taking an age.
On the Microchip site, if you select the section marker '8bit PIC
microcontrollers', the page has little 'purple' search buttons next to the
lines. Click on this, and you have a chart with hardware parameters you
can select. Tick the box for '2 AUSART', and you immediately narrow it
down to 8 chips.

18F86J65

You can do the same with other parts of the family, depending on what
performance/cost level you need.
This button, saves a lot of work....
I am assuming you mean 'async serial', since most of the PICs also have a
synchronous serial port (implementing I2C, or SPI). For more async ports,
it is common to add one of the SPI UART chips (Philips, and Exar do some
nice ones).

Thanks, sounds interesting. Do they require a special programmer or is the
programming interface built into the chip as seems to be increasingly the

Be that as it may, you're probably right. I take that line of ADCs
the way ADI markets them -- they're not microcontrollers with ADCs tacked

thing, and I should take a close look at the ones with the ARM cores.

The batteries would obviously be recycled, they're far too valuable to throw

thought by the time they're commonplace, there ought to be very good car
recycling facilities in place.
