Use "Hollow shaft Potentiometers" with google.

These may be what you are looking for?

.............and others for AGC use.

The result of numerous google searches has turned up conflicting answers,
I'm trying to find out how the discrete transistor AGC stages work in TV &
radio IF strips.

One answer states that varying the base voltage of the controlled stage
varies its input impedance to the previous stage by varying the B/E bias,
the other states that using variable bias varies the collector current -
on
which the stage's gain is dependent.

As hardly any manufacturers still use discrete devices for this purpose
there seems to be very little I can find on this subject, please can
anyone
help?

TIA.

Tube radios backed off the DC grid bias of several stages, uisng a
feedback signal from the detector. Negative on the grids reduces
transconductance hence gain.

Transistor radios worked the same way... reducing DC base voltage
reduces collector current and reduces transconductance hence gain.

The first of the cited "answers" is wrong... reducing base voltage
reduces transconductance and gain of this stage, but also reduces base
input impedance, which *increases* the gain of the previous stage
somewhat.

John

Thanks - any idea where I can find more reading on the technique?
My GE Transistor Manual (7e, 1964) has a few pages on transistor radio
AVC. It's a good reference for discrete transistor design. Maybe
alibris or ebay can turn one up.

Hey, Amazon has it...

OK here is a question that I have never seemed to find some at least
good guidelines on. What type of capacitor to use, i.e. electrolytic,
tantalum, ceramic, etc.

Trying to repair a Keithley 616 with a bad ranging board. It needs two
parts. One is a dual channel J-FET and is marked ITS30092; the other is
an op-amp with the markings ITS6214. Does anyone know of a cross, or even
who the manufacturer is? (Must be before my time...)

Thanks for any help!
I'm guessing they are specially selected Intersil parts.

Have a look at the IT500-IT505 dual N-channel J-FETs:
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/pdf/1824055.pdf

Maybe someone has an Intersil catalogue or databook from around that
time (early 1980s ???).
Thanks Franc, Intersil makes sense. It's starting to look like I'll need a
donor unit.

I would think that you could refer to the schematics in the manual ...

http://www.keithley.com/support/data?asset=5258

... and find a modern op-amp and dual J-FET with much better specs.

See http://www.intersil.com/products/pt/parametric_table_13437.asp

You may even be able to get a free sample:
http://www.intersil.com/samples/index.asp

Here are two dual N-channel J-FETs that may fit the bill:

Thanks Franc, but I was never much good at figuring out what specs are
important when cross-referencing other than voltage and current.
Especially with something as sensitive is this piece.

I have a couple donor Keithley benchtop DMM boards.. I can dig them out
and take a look for those parts,if you like.
Thank you for your generous offer, PhattyMo, but I spent a few hours
digging through our "graveyard" and found the pieces I need in another
piece of equipment.

I am looking for a source of type TM coax connectors and adapters.

Type TM is a miniature RF coax connector used way back in the sixties
on space programs. The connectors were originally manufactured by
General RF Fittings Division of Solitron Devices in Florida.
Eventually this company became today's SV Microwave. SV Microwave
still lists some of the original connectors on their website, but does
not list any between series adapters converting TM to something useful
like SMA, TNC, or N. I am contacting them to see if they have any
stock but obviously will have to wait until Monday to hear back.

In the interim, if anyone knows of a local electronics surplus house
that has TM female to SMA/TNC/N adapters, please let me know.

I'm trying to design the receiver circuitry for an IR link that
detects 1MHz signals at least 70cm away. Currently I'm using an Optek
photodiode (OP999) with OPA380 as my transimpedance amplifier, an op-
amp after the transimpedance amp to further amplify the voltage and a
comparator to reconstruct the transmitted signal.
At the moment I'm just pulsing a 1MHz square wave through my IR
emitter but the output from the transimpedance amplifier does not come
out square! Can anyone suggest an IC transimpedance amp that will work
for 1MHz signals across an IR link? (the OPA380 has a 1MHz bandwidth -
hence the distortion at the output).
Also, using just the OPA380 with a capacitor (to remove the varying
offset) and a low pass filter I can meet the 70cm requirement. However
with the op-amp and the comparator, I can only get about 20cm (if even
that). Am I missing some fundamental component that is ultimately
causing my receiver to fail?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Does anyone know if Evolube (possibly Elvolube) still exists?

Apparently so:

Haven't found anyone selling it in small quantities, but the manufacturer
can presumably direct you to a distributor.
Yes - my google search found several references to that family of automotive
lubricants, apparently an assortment of grades in a variety of colours.

Mostly extreme water resistance and greases that increase in viscosity in
response to shear (probably not very good for "wiping" contacts!).

John Larkin recently pointed out the NE3508 and NE3509. They are really
nice, steep Vgs versus Id and so on. Even better than the BF862 except
for one major obstacle: At >>50c they are way out of league for many
designs. High drool factor, followed by a depressed look at the BOM budget.

Question: Are there similar hotrod JFETs that are in the 10-20c range?

Has anyone documented the interface /identified the controller on the Ipod LCD, in particular the
5th gen video version..?

Replacement displays are pretty cheap and would be nice to interface to..

I saw this neat little circuit on a hobby website that uses this chip.
It is a melody synthesizer that has about 10 Christmas tunes on it. I
would like to get about 5 of those UM3481 chips for projects like that.
I have checked the usual sources, Digikey, Newark, Maplin, BGMicro, EEM,
eBay, but none have it. I know that Maplin had 'em about 3 years ago.

Thanks,

- Tim -

P.S. I filter out all the google mail addresses now, so I won't get a
reply if you post info from there.

but, i 'd rather be embarassed with chip than honored and chipless.
as it turns out i was looking for ucn6818 like the ucn5818 so a partial

so do you have a idea for simple conversion of the PLCC pkg to DIP-40

Probably, but they're usually hideously expensive.
