Where does this apply? Outback QLD?

I doubt if any past context is going to rescue it,

context ?

Easy to get three phase power in most residential places (unless in the
bush on a SWER). Pay your money to the energy provider and get you
electrician to upgrade you switchboard.

** Wrong.

Read the fucking CONTEXT !!!!!!!!!!!

I am in Sydney in a domestic residence and have recently had three phase
wiring installed. Go figure.

** What is the FUCKING context here ???????????????

Three phase for water heaters,

** Storage units only.

A home owner must comply with the local energy supplier's rules.

Those rules eliminated *new* installations of * instantaneous * units some
time in the late 60s or early 70s.

There was a popular brand manufactured in Balmain called " Simplex " - my
golfing buddy worked for them in the late 70s.

The firm still had work repairing old ones, or replacing them with new
models..

The two common models back then were the 20A single phase for showers and a
15A, 3-phase for larger jobs.

I once lived in a house that had a 3-phase Simplex - a horrible POS that
broke down every 6 months.

I wonder if a simple bimetal thermostat
http://australia.rs-online.com/web/p/thermostats/2282658/
and a relay would work?

N/C contacts opening at 15deg C, and auto resetting sounds about right.
Clamp it to the inlet pipe?

I've seen SPER just outside Nelbourne, they seem to have upgraded it
to a single phase now.

Response to CONTEXT was that it is easy to get three phase if you are
willing to pay the connection costs.

Plainly wrong as Phil has no idea, as not many toasters need three phase.

Still waiting for a link or details on banning instantaneous electric
water heaters.

The Q is NOT about whether it is possible to get 3-phase supplied to a

The Q is about the " purpose being discussed ".

This is IMPLIED - as are nearly ALL contexts.

Not spelled out for fucking RETARDS like you.

Coming in late and no idea of context.....

I have seen three phase power in two residential houses located in
Victoria.

When bands were the go and PA systems ran on three phase I had an adapter
that I would use to merge 3 power points on separate fuses for three phase.

Highly illegal but....

Now Phil, to wish cancer on anybody is pretty sick.
To stipulate bowel cancer is just fucked up.
Be careful what you wish for as you just may get it.

Oh FFS, there is no impediment for people with four wires out the front.
the only thing the electricty supplier wanted to know was the power
needs of the device and when lead in was being done.

Obviously none , three phase in many domestic sites is a simple ask when
capacity allows

You are all screaming at each other when a little bit of explanation
would stop it.
Councils will not put three phase on just because the consumer asks for
it for no good reason but if you have equipment that has to have three
phase they will.

** Fucking, absurd B O L L O C K S !!!!!!!!!

No consumer would ever ask ASK for 3 phase ** UNLESS** they already had
or planned to get an appliance that needed it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is the **NATURE** of the appliance that creates issues for the
electricity supplier - AND it is very hard to imagine a **WORSE**
example of a toxic load than a 3 phase, instantaneous water heater.

Think PEAK loading at PEAK times.

Think thousands of 10kW to 14 kW loads coming on at the morning and evening
peaks - that is **3 to 5 times** the normal, per household load.

One or two such heaters in an area would not hurt much, but a whole street
or suburb full of them would be a DISASTER for the suppliers.

This peak load issue arose in the 60s and the sale of more units had to be
discouraged strongly because of it.

Off-peak storage hot water was vastly preferred mainly because it avoided
peak load issues.

Anyone recall the massive media campaigns that urged all home consumers to
go that way ?

Or do I need to sing that "Midnight Oil" song ??
