Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

Also,

the color of the waves never change --- they are always just a
white-grey color. They don't even look like a color --- just that
"noise" look if you will. Also, if I flip through each input (video1,
video 2, etc.) the exact same wave pattern is present. Also, when the
waves are not present, there is some kind faint noise in the background
-- almost looks like smoke or gas. It's kind of wispy. Very, very
faint.

Finally, the higher the brightness level is on the TV, the easier they
are to see.

If the fuse is blown, they should be looking for the cause. The new one
may blow right away, or some time later.

A blow fuse in any of these electronic devices, is usually caused by
something else that is failing.

I know that during the warranty, you may have to pay the transport.
But, if the set is under warranty, why are you calling an independent
shop? If they work on the set, the factory warranty will be void.

Personally being troubled with having to have a product service is a
way of
life. Having to take time our of your heavily incisive schedule is
your
choice. Probably if your car broke down on the way to an appointment
you
would just leave it where it died and call a cab?
If my car will die after 100 days then I'll sue under "lemon law."
Unfortunatelly there is no such law for TVs, so Panasonic can actually
increase its profit by selling lemons that last only 100 days.

Franc-My wife's 30-something boss is like that. NEVER a cap in her
emails. I told her the same thing about the woman; it's a "my time is
too important to waste on common courtesy" affectation.

Your question is very vague.

Did you do any tests to see if the bridge rectifier is good, or maybe any
transformers, caps, or semiconductors to begin with???

Well, the only people I've ever personally witnessed using all caps
were either too rich to need to know how to write or someone who
couldn't afford the Apple II upper case 80 column upgrade. Now I'm
travelling back memory lane.

BTW "upper case" used to mean small letters. It was a confusing time!

I don't think they give out this info - but they will talk to you on the

Well spotted.

I just watched on satellite one I hadn't seen in years - the film
collation version of "And now for something completely different" -
dead parrots, lumberjacks etc. I'd almost forgotten how wonderful some
of those sketches were.

Cheers Alan, T2, Australia.

Any TV service man should be able to order you a new original cord, and
replace it. This is not a very expensive repair.

One must be careful on what is called an "very expensive repair"
Many of the larger TV shops have minimum rates on color TV's.
The shop my dad used to work for that figure was around $110!
$110 + the cost of the cord is NOT cheap. SO even though the cord itself
is $5 to $20 dollars, the labor could be a killer. You would be better
off at a smaller shop (if you can find one left). Ask before you leave
it to fix what ALL the charges are. This includes Estimate, diagnosis,
bench labor, pick up, disposal fee and anything else they can think of.

To the TV shop, it just a dead TV which could have a myriad of other
problems. I don't know how many times the customer had told me
one thing, when it turned out to be so much more. You don't know until
you put it on the bench and check it out. And there are charges to do
that at most shops.

Bob

If you know someone that can do a safe splice, it is possible to splice it.
If there is enough slack on it, you can put on a new AC plug, and use it.

As for safety, your dog is not going to live very long, if it continues to
chew on AC cords. When I was doing TV service, I heard about pets getting
killed or badly injured for life, when doing that type of practice. Having
the mains voltage in the mouth can do some very bad injury!

The 120V version of the 730 has a primary power switch on the back, but
the 120/240V version
does not. Not sure about the 220V version. The main power switch is the
touch-sensor button
on the front, which is powered by a small transformer/supply that's always
on(unless the rear
switch is off, on the 120v version at least). For this reason, it is not
possible to bring it
up on a variac, but I would not even consider that necessary. Other than
occassional minor
issues with the low voltage power supply(+/-15V for preamp & tuner), their
pretty damned
reliable. Just be prepared to replaced dozens of tiny lamps(14v/40mA) in
the front panel,
which are a bit challenging to get to.
The 730 is one of my favorite receivers in the world.

Incredably neavy lump. Unused for years and unknown history and mains
lead
is mildewed so
I wanted to insppect innards first and then power up on a variac.
Eventually twigged how to remove the top cover. Innards perfectly clean
and
healthy looking.
But now stumped - where on earth is the on/off switch ?

electronic hints and repair briefs , schematics/manuals list on
http://homepages.tcp.co.uk/~diverse
I've fully powered up now
Yes at least 6 bulbs blown
Problem with no powered control of volume although it did fire up randomly
when I wasn't looking.
Also maybe no radio o/p as manually changing volume setting plenty
of audio o/p on aux under volume control but no radio throughput.
on FM function select
The tuner motor system works fine up/down or presets
I assume the 6V battery keeps the 4066s happy with I/P and function
and tuner selects stored.
