Toshiba TV29C90 problem; Image fades to black...

Most likely it has a 3-button stack or "cylinder battery", 3.6v 50mah.
They are easy to remove by rocking it back and forth until it breaks loose from the motherboard. Generally these do not have a plug for external battery, but there may be a few exceptions. The jumper near the battery is a cmos reset and not a battery connector.

You will need to solder to reattach the new battery, so if you havn't done that a lot, you might ask someone who has to do it for you.
Easiest replacement method is to us a "Button Coin Cell Battery Holder Case"(ebay) and a CR2032 button battery, as that has leads and is easy to solder.

One of my 20th century computers kept its CMOS alive by three AA batteries in a holder that connected to the motherboard via a SIP header.

He's probably replaced the CMOS battery at least 3 more times now, since the OP was in 1999.

An old Packard Smell like that you would keep the battery and replace the computer.

I'm graduating in CS soon, I've done some fairly basic electronics and some
interfacing. Is a book really the best way for me (and others wishing to
learn the art) to go. Should we be considering some sort of post grad
electronics course. I assume we would benefit from buying some simple meters
and power supplies and experimenting with old stuff at home. Also is the art
of electronic repair becoming a thing of the past, as more and more circuits
become integrated, micro-controllers are a good example of this. So much of
the repairs I read about in this group, aren't electronic at all. They're
about the mechanics around the electronics eg VCR loading mech's, and surely
the only way to learn this is via, a hell of a lot of practise.
Anyway post the book titles here, as I'd like to hear any suggestions as well.
What about maplins ??. Their projects seem interesting, and you get a
finished product to play with as well.
I think that's enough bandwidth for me .....Bye

I have the Emerson VCT120 the only thing missing is the flip front cover that conceals the little controls. All else is there but I just tried to insert a VHS tape and it wouldn’t accept it. Are you interested in the unit?

You do realize that the post you are answering is 20 years old right?

I have an old timex marathon watch. Model number 745 e or f 8. It has water damage to the LCD screen. Will isopropyl alcohol or anything else help get this black streak mark out on the LCD screen? Will cleaning up the rust in the LCD screen help as well or is it just to late? Timex will not replace this LCD screen as this watch is so old it has been discontinued. I would post a picture of the damaged watch with the bad LCD screen but I don't know how. I can also say this, when taking into a watch repair place, they took the LCD screen apart and it when putting it back together the little black streak mark across the watch went from little to big! They made the situation worse! Please help me with this as to anyone having suggestions. My name is Robert! Thanks!

Also, will trying isopropyl alcohol on the LCD screen help if there is already this black line in my old timex marathon watch or is it just to late. If your only suggestion is to call timex and ask them for A replacement for this LCD screen that option won't work as they dont make this watch anymore or service parts for this watch anymore. So any help as to if this watch LCD screen can be repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and hope to be here from you all soon. Robert.

My guess is black streak was a hairline crack of the glass , from a
knock. Close handling then enlarged the crack.
Look for a "spare or repair" scrapper on Flea-bay or wherevever, with a
different fault of course

Most of the Timex Marathon watches are very inexpensive -- any repair would quickly eclipse the price of a new watch. Even if Timex could supply a replacement, it would not make sense to go down that route.

For info on the elestometric connector look for "zebra strip".

I had moderate success in repairing watch LCD's. They don't like water. Sometimes you can take a pair of polarized sunglasses and rotate them and the image will come back through the polarizer. At one point I found the polarizing material.

In a Seiko watch I really loved had a non round watch crystal. I had the ability at work to actually cut a piece of quartz on a diamond saw and make a watch crystal.

There is a Timex close to the Seiko, so I have to settle for that,

My problems were not the connector. Once you know how the connector works, you can likely re-position. Just think of fine wires of a certain pitch embedded into insulating rubber. There is other ways of doing the connector too e.g. alternating layers of a conductive elastomer.

I am making an art installation and would love to use this unit. Could we arrange something?

Looks like that baby is safe. Nothing to worry about.

There are counters with handheld laser scanner. And those handheld
scanners are NOT placed carefully to avoid customers, at least I saw
that in Hong Kong.

Did they do it deliberately? Is it a secret laser experiment? Well... :)

So all we need is an "accident" to hurt some babies' eyes? Which will
force them to see eye doctors and pay some treatment? Or maybe buying a
few pair glasses?

Oh well, I agree, it'll be good business. :)
