Hi all,

I am in the UK (but would buy from anywhere) and trying to get hold of a
Sanyo STK51427A to repair a PSU in a much loved old Goldstar 8mm/VHS edit
VCR.

This hybrid was in still use in 1994/1995, it is obsolete now and can not
get a data sheet off the Sanyo semicon website even. Found two with a big
US
chip supply company but there min. order value is $500 !!!.

Any ideas where to get one from, thank you for any assistance you can
offer.

http://eshop.euras.com/default.asp lists the STK51247, but how this varies
from the 'A' version I don't know. It shows a price of 66 Euros, but I'm not
sure if they can still get it. The site's in German and my German is very
basic. One bit says delivery time 2 - 3 weeks, but another bit says
discontinued.

Hopefully you can find someone who understands German to help you through
the website.

Sorry I can't help any further.

Nigel, many thanks for your help. I will follow this up, you are a star.

Maybe you can find a similar VCR on Ebay that has something else wrong with
it, I did that a while back with an old NEC.

I have about a 10 year old 55 inch Toshiba TP5580 and it works fine
and has beautiful picture. Only problem that I am having is that Once
in a while the screen goes Red and has some Vertical lines and then
about 5 seconds after that it shuts off. If you unplug it and plug it
back in it works. This is random. I have cleaned contacts on all of
the tubes thinking there may be a dirty or loose connection and on the
main board. Nothing looks bad on the board and it is really clean
inside. Not sure where to start actually troubleshooting, I do have
the schematics for the TV from a problem that I had to fix before.
Any Ideas. Please let me know.
Well, the set is shutting off according to a 'protection' circuit. You
could start by identifying the over-voltage/current protection circuits
and determining just what will force a shutdown through them.
Specifically with regard to Arthur's suggestions of fault points.

Sounds to me like either the red CRT is shorting, or else losing the 200v;
either will give a bright red screen with retrace lines. The set's protect
circuits sense the current draw and shut the set down.

But it's outside of the warranty now...
So what?

Fortunately, mine's been absolutely faultless in the 6 years that i've owned

equally shite backup service.
Ditto - mine has given excellent service and looks great.

So what?

So it's no longer covered!?

Not necessarily. The application of a warranty is determined by when the
fault appeared, not when you get it repaired. You are probably not entitled
to replacement or refund, once a reasonable time has passed. You are
entitled to a free repair.

I think Sophie is right. I've seen this problem quite a few times. I worked
in Post Production for several years as a graphic artist. One of my jobs
included cleaning several Sony Betacam SP machines. If a good cleaning (Drum
pinch rollers, capstand, guides ETC) didn't fix the problem a service person
was called in. Quite often a service person had to disassemble the drum,
clean or replace a head and the problem you described went away. Betcam SP
machines are a different animal, but the problem is the similar as it was
normal for one of these machines to produce a fussy line at either the top
or bottom of the screen. Also keep in mind that the machines I described
were used, as a new Betacam SP (recorder, editor) was around $10,000 You
might want to try Acetone for cleaning metal, it works better than isopropyl
alcohol, just don't touch plastic or rubber as it will melt them, for
materials other then metal use isopropyl alcohol 100%, not this half and
half stuff you can get at the drug store.
Hope this helps
Mike

Rene:
Are you absolutely certain that the A/C head is CLEAN. This is the head
assembly right before the pinch roller and capstan. The bottom head on
the
assembly is responsible for picking up the control track signal from the
tape and if it has gunk or build-up on it that may be causing your
tracking
difficulties..... clean it real good with isopropyl alcohol and a Q
tip.....
a visual inspection after cleaning will help you confirm that it is clean.
If in doubt, clean it again.... and again. Unlike the delicate rotating
video heads on the upper drum, you can use moderate pressure with a Q tip
without damaging the stationary heads on the A/C head assembly.

Additional information:

I watched the tape as it loads and as it travels its serpentine path.
Everything looks steady, no sign of tape edge crumpling, vibrating, nor
getting out of the lower cylinder ridge.

Also when I used a Fujifilm brand of S-VHS tape, I somewhat can record
and
playback but the quality is nowhere close to my 6 year old 2 head VCR.
The
top or bottom of the screen (depending on tracking manipulation)
displays
a
multicolor band.

Certainly could be the pressure (pinch) roller.... but not
necessarily
"nothing else."

In This case, nothing else.

One special note. When you remove the old convergence ic's, completely
remove the old heatsink compound and reapply an air tight thin coating of
heatsink compound to the new ic's. Make sure they are firmly attached to
the heatsinks.

Be very careful not to damage or overheat the circuit boards when removing
the old parts. Sony boards tend to be easily damaged and lift the circuit
traces.

This TV is about 7 years old. About 2 years ago it had similar problem. At
that time, we had a local company fix it. On the bill, they stated
replacement of one transistor. Unfortunately, I don't have that info
anymore
to specify which one.
This time, I did google search on this problem and found much useful info.
The purpose for this email is to further pinpoint the root cause of my
problem.
For a couple of weeks, while TV was warming up, I did notice short picture
problems. For a fraction of a second the picture would be distorted.
Because
of a short duration, I couldn't tell exactly what the distortion was.
Yesterday my family told me, that there was a problem with TV. I couldn't
immediately check it out so can't say, if this was instantaneous or not.
When I finally looked at it, I saw a pincushion problem. Today I replaced
F902 fuse and for a short while, everything is OK. After few seconds
(10-20)
the red color fails and, on the convergence screen, it moves off half of
the
screen to the left. Blue is still pretty good. At this time, I can smell a
burning component and I turn the TV off. After checking for hot
components,
I did notice, that the top STK is hot.

At this time, I'll follow the advice from David Kuhajda from 2000/06/09
for
a Sony RPTV KP-41EXR96 :
If the fuse is blowing, even intermittently you need to Replace both STK
convergence output ic's, check all the low ohm resistors in the
convergence
output circuit. Then check the vertical output ic and the 2 small fusible
resistor to the vertical ic, typically when one of the convergence ic's
starts
to go it opens up the fuse, which unbalances the voltage to the vertical
ic,
if
it is not bad now, it will likely fail within the next month. I had 3 in
a
row
that got 2 convergence ic's and a fuse, only to have the vertical ic fail
within
a month later, so we now replace the vertical ic whenever either the +15v
or
-15v fuse opens up, order the ic by number from MCM or other generic parts
distributor, as well as the stk outputs, Sony wants way too much for these
high
volume parts, and they buy them from the other manufacture as well.
David

If anyone has any additional info/advice please let me know.

Thank you.

Mirek
