Your eprom is bad. If you have the chippercheck setup you can reinitialize
about 90% of them without replacing the eprom, or if unsuccessful replace the
eprom with any CTC175-187 eprom and reinitialize it to the chassis you are
working on. No need to stock 50 different eproms with the chippercheck.

And MS software catches and spreads viruses like a pre-school class. It was

If he doesn't have any of these very heavily sold sets in at the
moment, he may not get the value out of the Chipperchek
either...QClip?

Look up Sony in the phone book, or go to their web page, and find out how
to
get in touch with them to find someone qualified to do the proper service

your set. I am sure that there are independent shops in your area that
can
also do this, but you want to have one that the tech is really familiar
with
your set, and does not just want your business.

Considering the age of the set, if the set was used every day, I would be
very surprised if the CRT is still in very good condition.
Well this is the thing. I already spend $290 getting the power supply
fixed, it doesn't seem wise to spend anymore on such an old set.

But then again is it wise to throw away the $290 you already spent by not
having the current problem fixed? It's hard to say.

Ran across this posting. I have a newer "Fresh Air" purifier. It does
up to 3000 square feet (based on 8ft ceiling), only one is needed per
home up to 3,000 square feet. My unit cost around $700, but I love it
and would have paid $1000 for it. All I did was take it out of the box
and plug it in, no cost to install, no filters to buy, 10 minutes to
clean per month, and it says it runs only about a quarter ($.25) per
day in electricity (less than $8 per month). I got mine by going to
www.freshairliving.com/rjt and entering "guest" for the password. They
were very helpful and let me evaluate the machine for 10 days on a
security deposit and I didn't have to pay shipping! Tell them Jason I
referred you and give them my email address please.

Good greeef ... throw it away and buy a flat screen lcd set .

I have an older RCA set i think a 92 vintage and it still has a better
picture than most new sets as for small image and print focus but the
new LCD set blows it away :)

I keep thinking of the small AC motors we used to use at work. Braking
on those could be produced just by sending them some DC. If Sony did
that, then it MIGHT be that there is simply a resistor somewhere that
has gone open, setting the braking current to zero. For Rewind, and
FF, I'd expect just some small fixed amount of electronic braking. So
I'm thinking that the problem might be an open resistor, or a dead
transistor which switches it.
If so, it should be simple (if time consuming) to find the bad component
with a decent ($20 or so) cheap digital multimeter. You need one with
a "diode test" function to check the transistors.

On betamax recorders, both the upper and lower drum are stationary. In
between is a small (adjustable, please do not tweak without proper
tools) gap, in which the head disc is placed.

Viewsonic monitor failure are 95% of the time due to bad flybacks.
Especially the g810 and p815 series of units. Usually the hv anode
lead will read some resistance to other pins on the flyback when it is
bad. In the G810 is most times does not damage other parts, in the
P815 it usually does damage other components.

Take your spam elsewhere, only a twit would pay $700 for an air purifier,
you can buy very good filters for an existing forced air heating system and
run the fan all the time if you need good filtration, works better than a
standalone purifier and it's a whole lot cheaper.

firstly, (if applicable) try moving or reinserting any ribbon cables. i
had an early sony which had erratic picture and this cured it.

The mode switch may need cleaning or replacing - I have not needed to
do this so cant be more specific.

And as Maarten says, do check the A/ C tape lever - very common problem
on sonys. make a note of how far down the retaining nut is screwed, as
if the lever is put back at the wrong height it will crinkle the tape
down the edge. It sounds like this may be a cause of your woes, since
if the counter wont move then the pulses aren't being picked up at the
AC head.

good luck

I actually made an emergency repair to a Pinto using it's battery and a
Craftsman screwdriver as the electrode, but at the time I was unaware that it
could cause the battery to explode (lucky)...

Double check the area around the crystal (the 503); there's an electrolytic cap
near it that leaks, causing all sorts of horiz and sync problems

Didn't the Pinto use AA cells as the battery <G>?

I took this to mean that the problem had gone away.
