~0.7% of full-cash-value... $3900 taxes on a $550K house.

Here on the Left Coast it's 1.1%, but that's based on purchase price;
they can't reassess a house to its current market value unless it's
sold, so I'm paying under $5K on a house worth, well, about 950. The
next buyer will of course get soaked.

John

But that be Californicator pricing. Around here $950K would buy you one
hell of a house.

...Jim Thompson

US$950k would buy most of NZ! :) Just kidding - there's a few houses
here worth that, but not too many! There's no duty on house sale/purchase
though, which is cool, coming from Australia where it's higher than even
you guys pay.

And I just love "Californicator" - first time seen! :)

It is also known as the Peoples Republic of California (or Peoples
Republic of Kalifornia). If you have ever been there, it is pretty
easy to figure out why :-(

I disagree, John. You go ahead and eat your beans; I'll stick with my
donuts and we'll see who can solve the more complex equation.
Carbohydrates win every time! You should know that by now or I've been

The first time I heard "californicate" was in, I think, Playboy
magazine, in the 1960's or 1970's, when Oregon passed a "personal
use" law (less than an ounce of pot was lowered to a citation,
not even a misdemeanor.) Almost immediately, in response to the
vast influx of Californians who just wanted to get high in peace,
some Oregonian came up with a bumper sticker: "Don't Californicate

Cheers!

Edmame are soybeans and are picked when the pods are still green and
soft (though very fiberous). The pods look just like snowpeas, but
have only 2 to 4 beans in each pod. They taste, and have a texture
that is similar to baby lima beans. No gas production, however.

I currently have 40 acres in soybeans, and they won't be picked
until the pods dry out and the beans are hard. That's the way
they are sold around here. Even dry, they are delicious, but
very crunchy. When they make tofu, they remove all the flavor
and probably vitamins from the natural soybeans

Rich Grise wrote:
What you're describing aren't soy beans. My cousin raises soy
beans for a living. They come about 3 to a pod, are about the
size of a large pea, and inedible. They make tofu out of them
because the mycelia of the tofu fungi break down the inedible
parts, not to mention that it softens them so that you can
eat them without breaking your teeth.

I don't know what happens if you just soak/boil them like
"ordinary" beans, but I'd speculate that they're pretty
flavorless, as is tofu. >:Q

Cheers!

Hahahahah... Now, THAT is funny.

I have, my sister-in-law is a veggie, and lives on the stuff.
She buys in bulk from one of the local veggie-markets.

Inspite of the freshness, and quality of preparation it still
tastes like bland sponge rubber to me.

Tofu is so bland that it ends up tasting like what ever it is
cooked in. Cook it in grease, it tastes like grease. Cook it
in chili, it tastes like chili sauce...

You need to try some Edmame. It tastes like it was once alive.

I'd like to! Swombo (She WhO Must Be Obeyed) and I went on a cruise in
May for my 50th, and our 29th wedding anniversary, around the pacific. I
'd happily be there right now.

Close, just a stones throw from the beach, but we don't have annual
taxes on property. We don't pay annual taxes on anything we own, except
stocks/shares and capital investments, when you are taxed on profits.
The only property tax is a 'stamp duty' when you buy the property and
annual local council (county) rates that cover sewage, garbage disposal,
street cleaning, etc etc. This council rate for me is AUS$540 pa, around
US$380. I assume that similar rates/taxes exist in most places. In fact
we have a neat thing here called negative gearing, I can actually get a
tax rebate on the property I own if I rent it out.
