The don't let you do that. If you try, they call you one of the
nuts.

Does cussing help in relaying your message?

Maybe.

I am trying to cut down.

You used to smoke 20 packs of cigarettes a day.

But since the operation, you have cut your smoking in half.

I'm sure one of the screws would stop you.
We got a place like that a couple of miles away. One. There aren't many. I was there the other day and needed like four of this and one of that and I just took ten each. Like I didn't even want to really bother them but the guy came and assisted me. I would have found it but this was much faster. they have all those like plaque type things with all the sizes of nuts in it and screws sticking out so you can bring a sample and try it.

I have a set of these (SAE and metric), so I don't have to take the
hardware with me.

Fastenall seems to make money. I've never been in one, though. I
usually buy from the Borg or online.

Well I smell lawsuit, and possibly even punitive because in another application those inferior bolts may have caused and insidious problem. If I was your boss I would have the lawyers on it yesterday.

But then if they are offshore that complicates things to the point of maybe not being worth it.

If you have a sense of civic responsibility, somehow without them sticking it up your ass you should find a way to publicise this so that they don't use these things in like cars and planes. Well they probably wouldn't anyway but what about ultralights, power saws, go carts, all that ?

This is not a new problem.

There are three Fastenall stores within 20 miles of me. They not only sell hardware, but high quality tools and shop supplies. They will sell in large or small quantities, and they will deliver to local businesses. Some friends of mine manufacture those fancy canopies used for art shows. They buy almost all of their hardware from Fastenall. I buy hardware there, for my projects. They have a decent website, and will ship directly to you.

Do they sell over-the-counter to individuals? Like I said, I've never
been in one but drive past them fairly often.

Can I chime in?

Fastenall (in my opinion) is ridiculously expensive.
However, Mike is correct. Their stores often have a good selection of hard-to-find items --- in stock.

That said, I can't think of very many projects in recent memory where I would have been willing to pay premium prices. Most of the time, I have plenty of advance notice on what will be needed, and I can simply have it ordered (same items) from much less expensive sources.

The few times I've been to Fastenall's stores, they sell over the counter, retail.

On a related note, I sometimes find myself straightening out the parts bins at Home Depot. They don't pay me for it. I think it may be a sickness?

If I catch myself, I stop immediately. :)

I usually buy in bulk, not one or two of things that I know I will need in the future. Also, keep an eye out for closeout items, like longer machine screws that can be cut off I also have a local scrapyard with tons of hardware from local OEMs that sold off their surplus.

Yes their prices are higher on small quantities, but 100 or more of a small screw are reasonable. Their customers are both OEM, and maintenance companies. It takes them as much overhead to sell you one screw as it dose a package. Back when I did industrial electronics I bought just about everything by the box, bag, reel or bundle. It got me priority service, and a very good line of credit. Others would complain, but the manager told them that if they bought like I did, they would get better service. They could pull a several thousand dollar order, in the same time as it took to fill an order of small quantities that totaled under $50. Even some of the largest electrical contractors bought in split lots, rather than maintain an inventory. They thought nothing of going to a jobsite, then making multiple trips to the wholesaler per job. Most jobs, I did in one trip.

That makes sense. It costs real money to stock all that inventory.

I'll have to check them out. Thanks.
