NY knew they didn't have enough ventilators for a pandemic a

Cuomo has been very vocal about his need for ventilators and PPE, asking others (presumably Pres Trump) to decide WHO will DIE because they don't have enough ventilators. Well, NY made the CONSCIOUS decision to NOT have sufficient ventilators for a pandemic. That decision was put in writing in a document called "VENTILATOR ALLOCATION GUIDELINES" released in 2015 (https://www.health.ny.gov/regulations/task_force/reports_publications/docs/ventilator_guidelines.pdf). The particular section covering this issue is on page 35:

E. Stockpiling Ventilators

New York State pandemic planning includes careful consideration of the potential shortage of ventilators, based on the estimates discussed above. There is a federal government stockpile of ventilators, but its use is limited for any one locality; there are not enough ventilators to be distributed to meet demand if many regions need them at once. New York State has stockpiled 1,750 ventilators to help reduce ventilator need in the face of the moderate scenario; however, there are no current plans to buy enough ventilators for
the most severe model. The State’s current approach to stockpiling a limited number of ventilators balances the need to prepare for a potential pandemic against the need to maintain adequate funding for current and ongoing health care expenses. Furthermore, severe staffing shortages are anticipated, and purchasing additional ventilators beyond a threshold will not save additional lives, because there will not be a sufficient number of trained staff to operate them. In the event of an overwhelming burden on the health care system, New York will not have sufficient ventilators to meet critical care needs despite its emergency stockpile. If the most severe forecast becomes a reality, New York State and the rest of the country will need to allocate ventilators and other scarce resources.

They KNEW that there weren't sufficient ventilators to handle a pandemic and ROLLED THE DICE that it would not happen. And, if it DID happen, well then TOO FUCKING BAD, PEOPLE WILL DIE!

No, that was a lie - there is PLENTY of trained staff to use the ventilators (just do the numbers). That lie was a rationalization to justify not buying more ventilators.

Respiratory therapy is one of the toughest curriculums in medical technology training. There are not a whole lot of them. They're the highest paid of the medical technologists for a reason, namely, they're in demand everywhere and there aren't enough of them. Don't bother creating more training opportunities for the field, the existing schools are significantly underenrolled as it is, and the graduation rates are low. Ventilators require respiratory therapists to not only operate the machine but also tend to the patient.. The machine and the patient require constant monitoring and adjustment. There aren't enough respiratory therapists in the world to handle just NY state's projected requirements. The technology is simply overwhelmed and there's nothing that can be done about it.Then there is the issue of payback. Over half the people who progress to needing mechanical ventilation die. Add to this the fact that most of these people are at end of life anyway, not exactly what could be called essential personnel, and anybody can figure out what's going on there.

If the most severe forecast becomes a reality, New York State and the rest of the country will need to allocate ventilators and other scarce resources.

They KNEW that there weren't sufficient ventilators to handle a pandemic and ROLLED THE DICE that it would not happen. And, if it DID happen, well then TOO FUCKING BAD, PEOPLE WILL DIE!

well, we could be buying masks right NOW from China but they won't import them (at least that's what I read). shit, they're all made in China -- even 3m makes them there. so what's that all about?
the whole Trump thing has been chaos from day one. the guy is a CON.

Yeah, he is. He's another Bernie Madoff. The Coronavirus is his Ponzi scheme falling apart. He thought he could bluff his way to the next election, but this catastrophe is being created by his bungling.

It is truly sad and that thousands will needlessly die makes it even sadder.. Trump, the sad President.

His "economic miracle" was supposed to come crashing down in 2025 but
the stilts got pulled early.

In a turn of irony he may end up being America's first socialist
president. Or second, depending on whom you ask.

Don't worry, this guy says it is all just a scam...

"concerned citizens" should just go right up and ask to be a volunteer
janitor to help clean patient rooms, if it's all a fraud they'll
probably get turned down. What if they say "yes! we could use the help"
though? does our video-maker feel lucky

I like to see if people have the courage of their convictions. I expect
we won't see a vid like that anytime soon, though.

Maybe he will catch it. He is old enough to catch a problem.........

That he refers to anyone whom might disagree with the little putz

I always laugh when a 'black' (african american) dude hollers out
"I'm a grown man!"
Through modern jailhouse stupid fuck technology, it has spread to
dumb backwoods white trash as well. Both have less maturity even
than Trump does, and that is quite a feat. Many times, both also wear
their pants down past their asscrack. Another 'modern' indicator of
maturity level.

Boris Johnson and many other leaders have caught it. I expect Trump's social distancing is actually more than adequate. At this point I think he is scared shitless. Partly from the risk of catching it, but mostly of the impact it will have on his campaign. His popularity is at his highest level at the moment. But when the death count is over 100,000 and the economy tanks, I expect the tune will change a bit.

Initially it was all about blaming the media noise on the democrats. Then he shifted gears and is taking this more seriously, very much more seriously going from "a bad flu" to 100,000 to 240,000 dead in a single day. So when he is being called on it he won't be able to say, "I could perhaps ask Tony about that, because I don’t know anything about it". It's all public record now. We even have a half-wit governor of Florida who changed his mind from Donald Trump's "demeanor change".

Sad that our idiot in chief had to wait for months to take this seriously. The die is now cast and it will have to play out.
