VOIP and a mobile connection has a severe time lag
you talk say over
then wait for reply who says over when complete
then you talk

well it won't be any good if it's like that then :(

VOIP works best with WiFi Ethernet etc, not mobile 3G or 4G

I have VOIP with cable internet and it's just like talking on a

Best just use your smartphone Mobile not VOIP!

Virgin are $40 pm for 12 gb 4g. Amaysim are not 4g yet.

Nope.

and would there still be a delay?

There is no delay, he doesn't have a clue about voip over 3G or 4G

Use it all the time.

So does a mate of mine, in fact he uses nothing else.

Works really well on WiFi just like a land line
Using Mobile it works but with a lag.

His doesn't, works fine.

Mine doesn't when I do that either.

I don't usually do it that way, but when I do it works fine, no lag.

Must be something fucked about your system.

When I look at the Network it says "Optus 4G",

And it remains to be seen if that is talking about
what that network can do or how your steaming

There is one in the library and McDs but that's it here.

Yeah, that's what my mate who does nothing but
voip calls uses, skype premium, $100 a year for
completely unlimited calls to any mobile or landline
world wide. Pretty good on the whole but can be
a bit flaky now that he is back in china for a year so
the grandparents can see the new midget for a year.

The caller id is very flaky indeed, hardly ever get
one which has me answering the phone with my
usual 'gday ugly' which is going to bite me on
the arse someday when Liz rings to congratulate
me on making 100 or Tony rings to tell me about
my knighthood for contributions to usenet.

I wanted a 4G modem fall back for my cable connection and found some
routers that would provide it. The ASUS RT-AC56U, RT-AC87U and RTAC68U
can all be used this way. The expensive and extraordinarily ugly

If you're considering to use the computer, then why don't you just use
a VOIP program/'app' on the computer, instead of the "VOIP phone box"?

because I want to use a cordless phone with the base station plugged
into the VOIP box

From using a 4G dongle, I assume this is for mobile (non-stationary)
use, so why drag along a "VOIP phone box" (and a normal phone?)?

it is a stationary connection. the problem is that there is no good
internet service in the area, and 4g is quite fast, so I thought it
might be a way to get a good service. it's not for me btw, it's for a
friend.

how do I do that?

brain strain, about a decade a go it was just a tick box somewhere in
"advanced" windows networking. If I remember correctly. it was a property
on one of the protocol settings.

Personally, I'd prefer to just plug everything into a simple hub or
switch rather than do something like that that likely could compromise a
systems security.

At one stage, you could pick up a simple four port 10/100 for less than
$50. I can't remember seeing one online in a few years.

then wait for reply who says over when complete
then you talk

well it won't be any good if it's like that then :(

VOIP works best with WiFi Ethernet etc, not mobile 3G or 4G

I have VOIP with cable internet and it's just like talking on a
landline

Best just use your smartphone Mobile not VOIP!

Amaysim are now 4G $10 a month for data at least this is what my
Windows phone tells me. But I also pay for Mobile to receieve calls
http://tinyurl.com/etter-than-a-Iphone

Virgin are $40 pm for 12 gb 4g. Amaysim are not 4g yet.

or what if the voip box is just plugged into the computers ethernet
port,
and the USB dongle is plugged into the computer. would it work that
way?

Nope.

and would there still be a delay?

There is no delay, he doesn't have a clue about voip over 3G or 4G

Use it all the time.

So does a mate of mine, in fact he uses nothing else.

Works really well on WiFi just like a land line
Using Mobile it works but with a lag.

His doesn't, works fine.

Mine doesn't when I do that either.

I don't usually do it that way, but when I do it works fine, no lag.

so what is your setup then?

I run a voip client in the smartphone.

If there is, I haven't seen one.
or alternatively is there just a dongle that has ethernet sockets for
this purpose?

There are some routers that can do 4G that are like that.
And some voip capable routers that have 4G fallback capability to so you
can just ignore the adsl2+ capability
and use the 4G fallback all the time.

can you say which ones?

That varys over time so I don’t bother to keep track of it.

And the other obvious way to do voip is to do voip in a 4G smartphone.
That works fine.

don't want to use the mobile. want to use cordless handset

There are real advantages in using a mobile instead.

I wanted a 4G modem fall back for my cable connection and found some
routers that would provide it. The ASUS RT-AC56U, RT-AC87U and RTAC68U
can all be used this way. The expensive and extraordinarily ugly
FRITZ!Box 7490 is designed to be the central part of a phone system
and can be connected to the Internet via a USB dongle.

thanks. I'll check those

It seems like one of those Asus models will be just what I need. :)
don't know which would be best, so I will have to investigate further.

Asus isn't the only operation that supplys routers with 4G
