Aw, Jim, you dissapoint me. Posting such off-topic stuff, trying to
stir up an argument.

You oughta be on one of the newsgroups just made for that stuff. Of
course you mightn't be able to handle the fit hitting the shan. And
besides, we don't need to stir up the resident kooks, especially over
the holidays. :-O

Frankly, the author was probably incorrect by branding it
'covert racism.' The examples of racism were 'overt', but
acceptable because ethics standards are so very low for
the American leftists. Here in the US, it is too often
politically okay for our leftists to day-to-day espouse
THE MOST racist claims.

Amongst a reasonably nice group of people, those racist claims
by the leftists would certainly cause raised eyebrows. The
movement of the American left to encompass the most trashy
people (not just dissident), is only one minor indicator of
their loss of values and any reasonable ethical/moral guidance.

Hopefully, the Democrats will clean up their act before they
ascend to greater political control of the nation. (It is
pretty obvious that the chosen candidates for BinLaden,
NK, Iran, Saddam would be a Democrat over a GOPer.

What about all of the top posting retards in usenet that don't have
the first clue as to how to make a correct post?

Perhaps this is closer to engineering.

It seems that institutional racism is in full swing in education. If
we were turning out way more engineers and scientists than we need,
I'd believe the Ed folks were on to something. Since the opposite is
true, my guess is that they're not only wrong, but dangerously close
to blatant racism and sexism. (I think it can be assumed that the Ed
establishment folks are not red neck Republicans.)

The following was written by my good friend, Dr. David Klien at Cal
State Northridge :

http://www.csun.edu/~vcmth00m/krantz.html

The view that women and minority group members learn differently from
white males is far from marginal within the mathematics reform
movement. A radio interview of NCTM President Jack Price, independent
textbook publisher John Saxon, and Co-Founder of Mathematically
Correct, Mike McKeown, occurred on April 24, 1996. The KSDO radio
show on Mathematics Education, hosted by Roger Hedgecock, was held in
conjunction with the annual meeting of the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics, in San Diego that year. During the
interview, President Price asserted:

What we have now is nostalgia math. It is the mathematics that we have
always had, that is good for the most part for the relatively high
socio-economic anglo male, and that we have a great deal of research
that has been done showing that women, for example, and minority
groups do not learn the same way. They have the capability, certainly,
of learning, but they don't, the teaching strategies that you use with
them are different from those that we have been able to use in the
past when young people, we weren't expected to graduate a lot of
people, and most of those who did graduate and go on to college were
the anglo males. [MC]

The reform movement presupposes that broad classes of non-white males
learn ``holistically,'' that mathematics should be integrated with
examples and connected as widely as possible to other human endeavors.
Algebra and arithmetic are particularly short changed as ``mindless
symbol manipulation'' and ``drill and kill.'' To cite one typical
example of this, a mathematics educator wrote on the Association of
Mathematics Teacher Educators listserve, ``I know this may come as a
shock to some mathematics professors out there, but few students find
manipulating 'x' and 'y' engaging.''

It is clear that proponents of reform are acting out of a sincere
desire to improve mathematics education for all students. But the
mathematics community should be suspicious of trends which draw
legitimacy from racial or gender theories of learning.

With all due respect, you shouldn't feel pressured to enter the fray should
you decide that it's not your cup of tea. You can passively observe, ignore
the thread completely, or [[alt][ctrl][d]] the whole thread as you see fit.

As an aside, I notice that your weren't shy about jumping into a similar
political thread on sci.electronics.design as well you should. I happen to
enjoy these threads for several reasons, not the least of which is because
it breaks the utter tedium of an exacting physical discipline like
electronic design. Also, it demonstrates that engineers and techies are not
the boring monodimensional supercool automatons that the uninitiated believe
us to be.

The whole topic of real racism has been so skewed, I think its hard to get
an accurate view.

Facts that represent differences in humans isn't racism. Like the one on
black baseball players. In my experience, black people tolerate heat better
than white people. They are black to begin with to protect their skin from
sun in hot climates in which their ancestors lived. Living in a mixed
community for years, I was often too hot to do anything, yet my black
friends were fine. On the other hand, when it was 50F and I was still in a
t-shirt, my black friends were in winter coats. Racism, no, just fact.
Humans are diverse and developed in diverse regions. OF COURSE we will be
different. Its not racism to notice. Samoans are huge, people with ancestry
from mountanous regions are barrel chested. Women are more sensitive. To
notice isn't racism, only to hate for it is. I won't be bullied into
ignoring diversity, we are NOT all the same and its just fine by me.

It's funny that conservative / right of centrists always get the bum rap for
being for being quasi fascistic demagogues. Who, I ask you, are more
totalitarian and demagogic than the P.C. thought police, who are by and
large liberal / left of centrist?
You are right on!

Nonsense. Complete fantasy. Have you not read Win's post in
sci.electronics.design on the continual slide of the tech industry. 1/2
million job losses? What part of the 10000's and 10000's of layoffs by
all the big tech companies are you missing?

Read my lips. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF ENGINEERS.

therefore consciousness cannot be "understood"
without referring to itself for the explanation,
therefore the "hard problem" of consciousness,
is intrinsically unsolvable as it is self referral.
