Actually, how are you supposed to pull away on the flat? I know that, in
practice, most people just use the footbrake. But if you do that on the UK
driving test, you'll fail; you're not supposed to release the handbrake
until the clutch bites (i.e. no freewheeling at any point).

[Note to Rich: heel-and-toe will also cause you to fail. Pedals aren't
supposed to be operated with the heel.]

You take the test with an automatic transmission.

If you do that in the UK, you get a driving licence only allows you to
drive vehicles with automatic transmission. This would be a significant
drawback when 90% of cars (and nearly all vans) have manual transmission,
so very few people do so.

Interesting. I didn't know they made such distinctions on licenses over
there.

Here in the USA, although we do have a 'commercial drivers license'
class for people who drive large trucks commercially, one can drive the
same sized vehicle for personal use (even licensed as a 'passenger car')
with no special license endorsements. Stick shifts, vehicle size,
trailers, nothing dealing with vehicle characteristics requires a
special license. Except motorcycles.

Not quite. It requires a higher level drivers' license to drive a
roadway vehicle with air brakes, or more than one trailer.
Tell that to the guy down the road with the Bluebird motor home
(essentially a Greyhound bus). No special driver's license needed. And
the bus is licensed as a passenger car.

Most machines needed either CR-CR-LF or LF-CR-CR as end-of-line, adding a
delay, to allow the carriage or basket to fully return, otherwise you got
the first character of the next line printing whilst the carriage was
still flying.

That's the reason for the still-widespread CNC tape code using LF-CR-CR.
It was designed for ASR33s et al.

When all the "modern" magnetic and semiconductor media have lost data,
punched paper tape will still be readable, by humans if necessary.

The first space is the start bit from which the sample timing originates.
It's the usual start/stop protocol: One start bit, five NRZ data bits, 1.5
stop bits. The start bit trips the clutch that starts the reading
mechanism, which samples the position of the selector magnet at fixed
intervals. The mechanism resets after 5 bit intervals and the clutch
disengages. You can regard the idle condition as one long continuous stop
signal, it's actually only 1.5 bit intervals between successive characters
in a string.

Most machines have an adjustment to set the sampling window relative to
the start so as to get the sample on the flat part of the pulses.

I once had a teletype as printer for a TRS-80 (remember those?), using the
cassette motor relay for signaling. I think I've still got the Z80
assembly code somewhere.
So make a 120V supply that can supply just the "leak-off", then the
"snub" energy won't go to waste and heat.

and it creates good paying, productive jobs.

BS. To create this jobs money was taken from creating other good
paying, productive jobs.
For example?
(IMO,it would have gone to social programs;welfare, etc, with a corresponding
decline in the society, and a huge increase in gov't paper-pushing jobs.)

How much are YOU willing to spend on space programs? Send a check to
NASA.
I do when I pay my taxes.

Why do we want to put humans back on the moon?

Employment. Ya gotta spend $$ to employ all those hands.

Ever since the end of WW II the best our government can come up with
is 1) build military stuff and 2) build space stuff.

Not build, but purchase from (kind of) private enterprises with money
extracted from you.
Ah,there's the good paying private sector jobs....

How do you figure "kind of" private enterprises?
Are you claiming gov't owns some part of them,or controls them like Obummer
is doing today?

Maybe we should start a strategic CO2 reserve, just in case...

Total human industrial CO2 production, primarily from
use of coal, oil, and natural gas and the production of cement, is currently
about 8 Gt C per year (7,56,57).
...
the atmosphere contains 780 Gt C; the surface ocean contains 1,000 Gt C;
vegetation, soils, and detritus contain 2,000 Gt C; and the intermediate
and deep oceans contain 38,000 Gt C, as CO2 or CO2 hydration
products.

Each year, the surface ocean and atmosphere exchange an
estimated 90 Gt C; vegetation and the atmosphere, 100 Gt C; marine
biota and the surface ocean, 50 Gt C; and the surface ocean and the
intermediate and deep oceans, 40 Gt C (56,57).
Though there are annual exchanges, most of your figures sound like
they are for annual exchanges that occur somewhat equally in both
directions within each year.

As for *net change* each year for various reservoirs of carbon/CO2:

That is simply not true. Building things like the interstate highway
system was a far better use of dollars. It left the economy with
something useful as a result.

Getting the young to stay in school an extra year or two to learn
useful stuff also is a good way to spend money. It keeps people out
of the labor pool today and results in a better educated work force in
the future.

No Wikipedia contributor has bothered to keep the graph up to date.
Therefore the data is duff and shows Wikipedia is not a reliable
source on this topic.
My experience is that Wikipedia has the "first graph" in their article
on "Global Warming" well-updated. The update appears to me to be annual
and occurring during the 2nd-4th month or so of each year.

The biggest disappointment to me is that when it was updated to include
entire-year data for 2008, it was changed from HadCRUT-3 to GISS.

I have some memory (questionable) that a few years ago it was GISS, and
changed from GISS to HadCRUT-3.

Rather than changing which index of global surface temperature to use, I
prefer to stick with one, or to show both that they have used. This will
require an adjustment since HadCRUT-3 uses 1961-1990 as "baseline" and
GISS uses 1951-1980 as "baseline", with the "baselines" roughly .1 degree
C apart.
