He simply meant that the entire nature of the Vietnam war was in and

The US Army had to do that. In Vietnam a village was effectively an
enemy encampment because the entire civilian population was organized
against the USA, as was revealed only later by the Vietnamese people's
own historical accounts. Both sides totally obviated all laws of war.

SEB and SED. All responses would go to alt.flame, not showing up here,
if I hadn't restored the groups to SEB and SED.

What he did is a very unethical method to (try to) shut someone up, since

the proper thing to do. Then it would have been a kind invitation to

with John Fields rant, and his rant was better directed towards

groups. Any time there is an attempt to move them to a noise group,
then the whiners complain. Howeve, followups appropate place again.

have ceased posting here and taken your crap to
alt.misguided.boneheads or something like that, since it's obvious
that you're clearly out of your element here.

As it is, you snip the groups from posts which you're too much of a
sniveling coward to confront here, replace them with alt.flame, then
snip the parts of the post you don't want to have to deal with, and
then post the altered post to alt.flame, making it look like someone
other than you posted it. ISTR something about forging headers
being... Illegal? We'll see...

And then, to top it all off, you don't even deal with the issues

Another thing I think is amusing is that while you're certainly not
adverse to posting your political condemnations here, I can't seem to
recall that you support anyone. Good thing too, if they got wind of

gate threshold delay was so unstable, that even our lab versions

The design was so darned incompetent (looking at hindsight) that I
was actually worried
when we were considering it for production. I mean, can you actually
imagine using the delay (needing perhaps 10-20% accuracy) based
upon a CMOS input threshold and
an RC delay (partially constructed from the input capacitance), and
the design has to work from below -10C to approx 45C!!! Spotting
the problem is a no-brainer, and I had very positively cooperated with
making things work correctly (ego-less development.) The problem
is that he had let his ego become involved in an errant design. The
delay had to be accurate within a few nanoseconds (I forget exactly
how much, but perhaps +-20ns.) Doing the delay with a clocked
scheme might have been feasable, but I would have had to do a more
careful analysis due to the async nature of the clock. The analog
delay line made the design a little less fragile because of the
effectively
infinite resolution of the delay (instead of being quantized.) If
production volumes would have been at the 10K-100K level, I probably
would have redesigned the board for more cost effective components,
but at the 100-1K quantity level for the first versions, the delay line
was initially satisfactory.

Note that my 'solution' was also suboptimal WRT the production cost,
and parts availability, but I didn't have time to solve the problem
correctly
and guarantee a production worthy design given my time constraints.
It isn't helpful to let egos get involved in engineering decisions. This
seems to be a too-common flaw with engineers (who sometimes develop
an artistic temperment.) Perhaps that isn't really just a flaw of
engineers,
but might just be human nature?!?!?

Hi John,
this is a problem that never ends. I got into a shitfight on thursday with a
twit who took exception to my pointing out his design had a -ve noise
margin - Vohmin of chip1 = 2.4V, Vihmin of chip2 = 3.15V. He powered chip 2
(Vihmin = 0.7Vcc) with a diode from a s/w controlled supply, which can be
set from 3.9 to 5V. He literally was screaming that I was wrong (clearly I
am not - RTFDS), and his entire argument was based on the fact that Vcc is
"usually" 3.9V, so its all fine and dandy. Best not to think about what
happens when Vcc is set to 5V (I took into account a 50C temperature rise,
and its effect on diode Vf)......chip 1 is a cpld which drives 27 x chip2
thru a series terminator, at 16MHz. Admittedly Voh = 2.4V is bloody low for
a cmos chip (Ioh=-4mA), but 3.15V is pretty optimistic Voh at this load -
Vohmin is specd at 0.9*3.3V = 3.0V at Ioh = -0.5mA, still giving a negative
noise margin....

Fortunately my manager is a smart guy, and understands the concept of
worst-case design. He quickly realised this fools entire argument is 3.0 >
3.15, ie shite. I especially liked the bit where he screamed that I am a
liar, and the data sheet for chip2 says Vihmin = 0.5Vdd, which of course it
did not. His face went purple when I produced the datasheet and proved him
wrong. Its pretty clear his 0.5Vdd is a "remembered" CMOS threshold.

This guy is typical of many "hackers" I have had the misfortune of working
with - no mathematical skills, unable to even spell "statistics" let alone
understand them, and a propensity to create circuits that need twiddling
from unit-to-unit. His favourite phrase is "99% of the time...." Anyone with
manufacturing experience knows Murphy ensures that 1% gets you every time.
And boy, does he take it personally when his "designs" are changed. A heroic
effort was required on my part not to abuse him, beat him and impale his
severed head on a stake outside my office as a warning to others.

To make matters worse, his immediate boss is a newcomer (and alas not a
circuit designer), and no-one ever mentioned to him that this guy cant
design circuits to save himself - every single circuit he has ever designed
has failed (in the field, for those that made it that far). He's very good
with firmware (at least when he fucks it up we can fix it without a
soldering iron, and his bug rate is actually quite low) but he is firmly
convinced hes a circuit designer. I quit about a year ago, and became a
contractor (moved to a lifestyle farm, only work 2 weeks a month cos it pays
the bills and im a lazy sod), at which point this pillock started inflicting
his "designs" on the company via the un-initiated newbie boss. Having
finished all my current tasks, I am now fixing the field failures he has
caused. After a lengthy discussion with examples, the newbie boss (whom I
used to work with a few years back, and who knows I am not a complete idiot)
has learned his lesson.

I think he gets frustrated that we have built around 10,000 of my 60W planar
SMPS without a single field failure or design fault (plenty of faulty units
in production, all due to piss-poor soldering by our former contract
manufacturer, whose yamaha smt machine with vision head was mysteriously
incapable of placing a soic8 correctly, let alone a TQFP144, but thats
another story in 2 years of operation.

I had a hilarious argument with him a while ago, when he insisted that the
inductance of a trace over a ground plane was the same even when a 40mm x
200mm hole is cut in the ground plane, and a total of 4 x 20mil tracks
"stitch" the gap (and are nowhere near the 16MHz signals flowing over the
"cut"). He didnt believe me, or Fred Terman, or Fred Grover, or Messrs Ramo,
Whinneray & Van Duzer. At this point, I pulled rank, which went down like a
cup of cold sick.

He once came up with a great idea to throw 10mbps across 20mm using a 200mm
x 50mm loop antenna (makes you wonder, if he knows about loop antennae, how
come he doesnt know that loops have inductance ?!?), and 10ns time constant
exponential current spikes of (IIRC) 100mA peak. A single block comprised 48
of these things, and a product comprises anywhere from 1 to 200 blocks. A
crude calculation showed that one of these loops, all by itself, pretty much
used our EMC budget for the entire product (which has to be CE marked). That
didnt convince him. An EMC test with 4 of these loops was about 8dB over the
limit, but that didnt convince him. Yet again I pulled rank, and his stupid
(in the context of product emc specs) idea was shitcanned.

One day when I am bored I will sit down and catalogue his list of disasters,
then attempt to ascertain what he has cost the company. I would have sacked
the fool years ago, but my boss is a caring, compassionate christian (unlike
me) who is trying to do whats best for this guy, rather than the company -
he hasnt been sacked because he is old, and emotionally fragile, and my boss
is worried he will kill himself (personally I think that will solve
everyones problems, and increase the national average IQ, but its not PC to
say so , and no-one else has worked on his CPLD/cpu firmware.

I was originally hired because his power supplies caught fire, none of the
other circuits worked properly, and we had a tight deadline to meet.
Correcting the mistakes was a fairly traumatic process (at least he admitted
he knows shit about smps, and didnt hassle me about that), but by relegating
him to firmware only, we met our deadline (although 2 years later the
firmware is still not finished, and there is only 8k of it.....), and as a
result the company revenue has grown about 40 times bigger.

I sort newsgroups by "sent" (time sent) and read the articles I am
interested in. Your articles always appear at the end of the list,
sometimes obviously out of sequence due to replies to your postings
appearing in the list above your messages. It appears the clock your
computer uses to assign the "sent" time is about 12 hours ahead of most of
the rest of the posting world.

Or maybe you like having your postings at the end of the list...
