well from San Diego to Juneau. I picked San Francisco as a nice
compromise between glitz and boredom.

Dunno. I've found the SD area quite nice, though grossly over-
populated. LA simply sucks bilge-water. The mid-state (San
Lois) absolutely beautiful with friendly people to match.
SillyValley is cute, but I wouldn't want to live there. SF, you
*must* be kidding! I'd rather live in NYC (and there is a zero
chance of that!).

I've spent some months in NYC, and have no burning desire to go back.
I spent ~20 years 70 miles north of NYC. Other than Broadway
shows (some were excellent, most not) I wouldn't give you two ¨Řţănts for the place. What a dump.

The thing I like about SF is the spectacular terrain; I live one block
from a genuine canyon with a stream running down the middle, and about
a mile from a 950-foot mountain that's a joy to hike. And the weather
is wonderful... no mosquitoes, no ragweed, cool most of the year. For
that, one can overlook a few (OK, a few hundred thousand) freaks and
lunatics. SF is green and gold, NYC is the color of concrete.
Please be happy. SF is a nice place to visit, but no I have no
interest in living there. The one business trip I had in SF
(most were in Silly valley) I only wish my wife could have been
with me (right in the financial district-top of the cable cars).

OTOH, the hookers just a few blocks from the hotel wouldn't have
interested her much.

NO, I don't believe your monotonic rule from south to north.
...though what do I know. I live on the far corner of the US.
;-)

No, not monotonic, but the trend is real. It shows up nicely in women.
In SoCal, there are gorgeous, dressed-to-kill, surgically perfected,
materialistic ***ches galore (like Dallas),
Don't get me started on Dallas! What a moronic city! The people
are superficial (much of my wife's family is in Dallas, BTW).
The women (particularly the young ones) are stupid. Their
fathers even more so, because they buy heir "princesses" hot cars
so they can kill themselves. The kidz drive like the spoiled
brats they are.

Not to mention that Dallas is the *ugliest* city I've ever had
the "pleasure" of visiting. What a dump.

and as you move up the
coast, they get plainer, brainier, less 'beautiful' (in the
made-for-TV sense) but a lot more interesting.
Well, it's not monotonic, nor universal. The thing that
impressed me about SoCal was the number of young women who had
lizard skin.

another issue. The destruction of property and *murder* is a

No, I didn't take you seriously. Owls will survive. They're
amazing creatures and don't need anything more than some place to
roost and some small creatures to eat. Hell, the spotted owls
have been found taking up residence in WallMart signs. ...only
"old-growth" WallMart signs, to be sure. ;-)

ELFs are another story. They're simply terrorists and must be

Indeed! I was in an argument with someone today about these
fires. His position was that these "nuts" shouldn't be building
their houses where there was a possibility of fires. He equated
it to building along the flood-planes of the Mississippi or along
the coasts. ...a disaster waiting to happen.

My counter-argument is that we *know* how to manage forests (for
profit, even) and are capable of doing just that. We're *not*
capable of holding back water. We are capable of squeezing it
here to cause more problems there (Whack-a-Mole), but we simply
cannot control water. Forrests are *easy*, by comparison.

All I can tell you is that my nose moisture froze on one inhale and
the ice crystals made my nose bleed lightly. The muffler fixed that
quite well. Recall that it rarely freezes more than 5 days a year here
so I am unacclimated. Similarly, mountain folks feel envigorated
by the higher O2 at 300 feet here until the heat keels 'em over.

I enjoyed the same areas you did, but I also had a great time in downtown SF,
where I worked (74 New Montgomery). It was the late 60's - bra burning in a
barrel and prancing about topless was a daily thing for the girls, there were
wackos spouting their thoughts at Standard Plaza and street corners, Black
Panthers were strutting their stuff some days and looked sharp, but always
pissed off, the Berkley Barb was a good read. I enjoyed wandering around "the
Haight." A great man, S.I. Haiakawa was President of S.F State. And great
food was everywhere to be enjoyed.

And, as I quickly learned after being an idiot just once, when a young lady
asks " do you have the time?" she ain't asking where the clocks hands are
pointing.

Every city has its ugly areas, but few citys are as interesting as S.F.
