12V battery?
WTF do you mean jump start a battery? A battery doesn't need a jump start.

Hai!

Kindly forward me anything about blue ray please.
Is there some reason that you cannot do your own research?
Perhaps you think this group is something it is not.
May I suggest that you use Google and lookup USENET and also lookup blue
ray.

I've never seen an insulting bushing. ;-)

I was wondering if anyone would catch that... You win!!!

Actually if an insulator broke off and fell on my head, it would be
quite
insulting :)

More like injuring. 10 pounds of ceramic with a sharp edge falling 60
feet or more could kill you. :(
Actually, "insult" is a medical term that means an injury or an incident
that can result in injury:

I have heard my brother in law (who is a medical researcher) use the term
to describe things to which people subject their body, that eventually

The dust is from your own air.

Greetings TE Chea..

While dust can be a real issue in personal computing and
preventative maintenance should periodically be performed, you
shouldn't have to go to such extremes of alcohol and cotton swabs
on DIMM sockets! Of course, this is also dependent on the
environment that you PC is in which, isn't stated here.

While dissimilar metals that are in contact can and often do
corrode over time resulting in a high impedance electrical
connection, with the sheer pressure of the contacts of the DIMM
socket upon the DIMMs, electrical conductivity shouldn't be an
issue. It certainly is possible to have a socket that has simply
worn out. Especially if that socket has been excessively used for
removing and replacing memory modules (DIMMs). However, again,
for the ordinary PC user, this should be an issue. It should also
be stated that it is also possible to have a defective socket or
one that is extremely cheap in construction quality that could
contribute to premature failure.

A couple of suggestions:

1. If you're in a inside office, home environment and the case
can be situated to a higher level (off the floor) do so. It's
amazing how much dust can be accumulated while PCs actually sit
on the floor. If it's even possible to put the PC up on top of
the desk, try this for a while to see the difference.

2. As you're doing, continue to periodically clean the air
filters and check the fans for proper operation. As you know this
will continue to provide a bit cleaner air to the inside
components.

3. Obtain a white film eraser. Reference,
http://www.stabilo.com.sg/products.php?cat=5 and notice the model
1186. More specifically,
http://www.stabilo.com.sg/products.php?cat=5&subcat_select=0,4 I
have been using this style of eraser for years on all contacts,
gold plated or otherwise. The reason is it isn't abrasive, it
will clean off all oils, dirt & corrosion from fingerprints or
oxidation. Thus, once the shavings are brushed away, you're left
with a shiny series of contacts that will maintain electrical
contact for a substantial period of time.

Try cleaning the contacts with a white film eraser to the DIMM
that you're using, brushed off the shavings and inspected that
the socket in which it is going is mechanically sound. There
should be no further issues. IF there are within a short period
of time, the problem is probably NOT mechanical but an
intermittent (possibly heat related) electrical issue. A simple
way to confirm that is to plug in another DIMM in its place for a
couple of weeks and see if the problem returns. If not, your
previous DIMM has electrical issues. Of course there are also
memory tests, mem86 for example, that can be run continuously to
determine memory failures. Eliminating as many possible causes,
as much as possible, then, ultimately, isolating the cause is the
answer to determining the real problem here.

Cheers,
Mr. Mentor

| Hi,
|
| I am a total rookie when working with circuits, but I have
built a kit
| set transonic proximity sensor. I'll explain my use at the end.
|
| Essentially what it does is turn on an LED when an object gets
near to
| the sensors. I have extended the kit with another kit to add
relay
| functionality. So when an object nears the sensor it switches
the
| relay. All this is a simple kit set circuit that runs on 12V.
|
| My only problem with it, is the sensors a very touchy, when it
senses
| an odd shaped object (like a human or dog etc) the relay
switches
| madly on, off, on, off until the object is really close (EG: 2
Inches
| etc).
|
| I am wanting to add a delay to the circuit, so that when the
relay
| switches it stays on for at least 3 or 5 seconds. In other
words, when
| the sensor begins to detect the presence of an object rather
than the
| relay going nuts, it will actually stay on for at least 3 or 5
seconds
| etc. When it is due to turn off again it will likely receive
another
| erratic pulse from the sensors due to the odd object near by.
Hope
| that makes sense.
|
| What this is designed for:
| Just in case you are curious.

This way
| he always has fresh water whenever he needs it. So far I have a
| washing machine solenoid which switches on a home made pressure
mat.
| This does not work that well though. Hence, using a proximity
sensor.
| My dog just needs to walk up to the water outlet and the water
turns
| on. It works at the moment, but switches on and off very fast
as he
| gets within the distance I want. I need to set a timer of sorts
| (possibly a 555) to keep the relay on rather than switch it off
| immediately. This way it should keep the water flow steady for
the
| drink, and will turn off within 3 or 5 seconds of the dog
moving away.
|
| Really appreciate any help.
| Really just need some help to add a small delay timer between
the

More like injuring. 10 pounds of ceramic with a sharp edge falling
60

Actually, "insult" is a medical term that means an injury or an incident
that can result in injury:

http://medical.merriam-webster.com/medical/insult

I have heard my brother in law (who is a medical researcher) use the
term
to describe things to which people subject their body, that eventually
cause cancer or other disease.

Some doctors are an insult to your health, as well. I am diabetic,
(along with other problems) and have had a problem with pressure sores
on my lower legs for almost two years. The first doctor blamed me for
them, and the second ignored them. All they cared about was that I took
all the medicene they prescribed. The swellling and sores got so bad
that it lookedlike I was going to lose both legs. One of the things they
kept harping on was that I use absolutely no salt in my diet. A little
over a month ago I decided what the hell. If they were going to start
cutting off body parts, I might as well enjoy my meals for whatever time
I had left. I went back to the level i was using 15 years ago, and
within three days they sores started to heal. In two weeks they went
from 30+ to two. The swelling in my fett wasn't as bad, the migrane
headches stopped. I was very hat intolerant, but I can take about 15
degrees more, without AC. My vision is better, my balance has improved,
I have lost about five pounds, and I am regaining some strength. After
some research, it turns out that almost every medcine I am on lowers
sodium, potassium, or both levels in your blood. My electtrolytes were
all screwed up, and it was slowly killing me.
It is amazing how much we need to take charge of our own health, and how
much doctors rely on simply treating everything with the latest pill,
rather than focus on the root causes such as diet, exercise, and attitude.
I have never believed in the evils of salt, but I do know some people who
dump it on their food until their veggies look like snow capped mountains.
There is a need for salt, as you have seen, and any sort of fanaticism in
diet can be unhealthy. A friend, who is pretty much a "health food nut",
told me of his latest discoveries that the body must be kept alkaline, and
an excessively acid condition causes disease. See:

http://www.acid-alkaline-diet.com/
http://www.a-better-way.com/naturalhealthschool/acid-alkaline.html
http://preventdisease.com/fitness/nutrition/articles/acid_alkaline.html
http://www.ctds.info/acidic-foods.html

A possibly more scientific viewpoint is:
http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/DSH/coral2.html

I once found a reference that claimed the body cannot use regular table
salt for its sodium requirement, and that it must first pass through the
vegetable kingdom, and be "chelated". But I'm not sure that's true:

http://www.supplementquality.com/z_askexpert/chelated.html

Here's information I found about sodium:

http://health.rutgers.edu/nutrition/sodium.htm
http://www.healthvitaminsguide.com/minerals/sodium.htm

Here is a (probably a bit wacky) pro-salt site:

http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/salt.htm

I know you can do your own searches, but I found these to be interesting
and informative.

HTH,

Paul

PS: I and some friends will be doing a sing-along for disabled and elderly
veterans at the Perry Point VA Hospital this Sunday. I have done this many
times before, and it is a rewarding experience for them and us. I was very
pleased to learn that one bedridden patient was tapping his foot to our
music, and he had been largely unresponsive previously. Many of these
patients no longer have family or friends to visit them and they are living
out their last days in lonely isolation. It is the least I can do to spend
some time entertaining them and providing some interaction with the outside
world. They have given so much, and we who have benefited from their
service and sacrifices must never forget them.

Ok last post on the subject. They are NOT illegal everywhere, many
businesses and restaurants use them.
Not in the U.S. they don't... at least not without attracting a lot of legal
trouble for themselves.

*Shielding* isn't illegal, though, and some companies might purposely build
rooms where RF has a hard time getting in and out.

You should think about WHY jammers are generally illegal though: RF doesn't
pay attention to walls or other boundaries in ways that are always obvious to
the human senses, so you have no way of knowing whether you're jamming some
cop in the next room or some physician in the car next to you even when you
have a low power jammer that works over "only" 50'. As such, you're
potentially putting someone at significant risk for some stupid joke with your
pals, hence it should be obvious why the laws are the way they are.

A 4000-series 4017 decade counter could be configured to do this.

It has 10 output lines. IIRC, only one of these lines is ever high at
a time. Normally, as you clock it, the high line moves along by line.
After the 10th line has been high, the sequence starts again with
the first line being high again, and so on:

0000000001
0000000010
0000000100
0000001000
0000010000
.. . .
1000000000
0000000001
0000000010

etc.

I used to use these as a teenager. You can use them as a divide-by-N
counter, for N up to 10.

You can make "LED chasers" with up to 10 LEDs. That was fun.

ANYWAY, by connecting one of the outputs to a "reset" pin, you can
configure sequences of fewer than 10 states. Here, you want 3 states
as follows:

001
010
100
001
010
100
etc.

If you use a 4017, you also have the opportunity to extend the sequence
beyond 3, and up to 10 states.

| in your body fluids, and your body doesn't care where they came from.
| Chemical reactions are sensitive to temperature; things that happen
| quickly at cooking temperatures happen more slowly at serving
| temperatures, so I would expect salt in the pot to have at least slightly
| different effects from salt at the table. The food also spends more time
| in the pot or the oven than it does on your plate.

Etiquete on Usenet - you've GOT to be kidding..

Cheers,
Mr. Mentor

The mere thought has got me chuckling, although I DO sincerely
appreciate the amusement.

Who is W_TOM and why has he appeared in every single thread that has
contained those keywords since 2001???
I think he sells surge suppressor strips and he uses the newsgroups to
promote his products by arguing with people about their effectiveness.
