Problem solved, fortunately it was just some bad solder on one of those
connector sockets.
Now what was that about a lamp timer? I've never worked on a DLP set before
so I'm not familiar with it.
The set keeps a record of lamp usage. To reset the hours count to zero
for a new lamp, you need to follow a certain procedure.

The following procedure apppears to apply to most models:

After replacing lamp, enter IN-START mode.
Select "LAMP replace" and enter that mode using volume (+) key.
To reset the lamp use time, press the "OK" key.

Otherwise, you may see "Total time reset?", in which case you respond
with "Yes" using the volume (+) key. Then press "OK".

For other models, the instruction is to "turn off by IN-STOP key in
ADJ remocon".

I might not be out of the woods just yet.... although the set is working,
the remote isn't responding and I can't get a universal remote to work
either. The service manual does not include the control panel board so I
have no way to trace the remote signal. I'm not sure what to do now, I'm
worried that this may be something I caused while I had the set apart.......
Pins 1,2,3 of P2 are where the IR sensor connects to the tuner board.

See http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/MB-042C/Tuner_UL.jpg

If you've disconnected P2, then you'll also have disconnected one of
the I2C buses.

Did you reset the lamp timer so it will not remind you in two months to put
another lamp into it?
I was going to remind him of this myself until he told us that his
remote doesn't work.

I have a Powerpoint presentation that describes how to reset the
counter and how to recognise the difference between 5kV and 15kV lamps
and ballasts. I can upload it if needed.
