WTB: Running LED sign

Hi all.

I am after one of those running LED signs. Idealy I would like to be
able to hook it up to a serial port so I can write some software to
change what is displayed on the fly.

Has anyone got an old one? Please contact me directly.

Regards, Peter

i've got an ex-golden casket job, there are dead leds on it , programs by a
serial port, or by using an XT (old pc or at/xt with switch) keyboard. Where
are you at?
i don't know what they are worth, but i got one.

these types of units are usually >$600 for a decent one NEW, and can be had
with multi-colours etc.

I'm eternally frustrated by Jaycar's web site - so many times, I've had
to give up searching for things that I *know* they have, and ring
them....

Anyway, try these URL's:

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=XC0194&CATID=42&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=699

and

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=XC0192&CATID=42&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=699

If those links don't work, the catalog numbers are XC0194 and XC1096.

Oops - make that XC0194 and XC1092

jc sell the running displays, a bit pisspoor in what they can do (appart
from being an oversized clock) but good if all u want is a scrolling text
display.

Yeah, i had a mate with one of these. Those pesky resistors on the back get
real hot. where the resitors are the leds burn out ey. Well fuck me, but i
reversed engineered on of these brain dead pieces of crap in a day, perhaps
even if you ask nicley i could give you some protel shitmatics. The
particular unit was designed by some fucken right cocksuckers from a
fucknuckle company called EDMI in good ol sonny QLD. Lucky for us, some
slant eyed queer guys bought the company and pissed off to singapore. Good
ridence, just like a typical au company. PS, these things are old technology
and worth nothing but a trip to the land fill.

You are getting ripped off.

Thanks for that but I need one i can program via a terminal package or
simalar as I want to write some software in Delphi to control it. In
other replies there is mention of ones that are from Golden Gasket. We
purchased one of these on Ebay but I haven't got any info on how to
program it up to display anything else. Any info on this type of unit
would be appreciated.

using the XT keyboard, you hit ESC and start typing the message, the
function keys are your display transition effects and when used with crtl do
other effects.

i never hooked mine up to a com port yet - there is a piece of software
called messagepro which interfaces with these things using the com port - i
have just never had a female to female com port lead

They did work, thanks. For future reference, you might find
http://www.tinyurl.com/ usefull. Turns unfeasibly long URLs
like the ones you posted into ones that are short enough to fit
on one line. Handy sometimes.

For eg:

http://tinyurl.com/z1vd
and
http://tinyurl.com/z1ve

(Not that there was anything wrong with the way you posted
the long ones or anything, it's just that the short ones can
be easier sometimes).

I'm aware of TinyURL, but I don't like it because it hides the real URL,
and I don't think it's very sensible to click on a link when I don't
know where it's going.

Peter

On a related note, does anybody have a source for electromagnetic flip signs
at a reasonable price. I would like one with digits at least 200mm high,
and able to display a five digit number and decimal point (eg 888.88). The
signs I mean are usually yellow on a black background.

Cheers,

Luke

Mindless paranoia.

Another downside with TinyURL etc is that it only lasts for a
relatively short time and cant be used from groups.google etc.

The obvious approach is to include both forms in the post
so either can be used, the short one while it still works.
And its then obvious what the short one will go to too unless
you are mindlessly paranoid about deliberate deception.

Hmm, didn't know that. What kinda timeframe? I was under the
obviously misguided impression that they lasted forever, what
with the way the urls keep incrementing 'n'all.

Quoting from: http://tinyurl.com
"By entering in a URL in the text field below, we will create a tiny URL
that will not break in email postings and never expires."

It's an easy way to keep the spambots from harvesting my Paypal email
addresses.
Stops em dead! So I hope the "never expires" is correct.

BTW, I did a moving message board back in 1989 I think it was. Published
over 4 issues of Silicon Chip.

only of nostalgic value now really.

Hello Peter,
I have learned my lesson well about not watching where I clicked.
My computer picked up a bad internet pox and is now on regular
treatments of spybot, ad-aware and CWShredder. :)

It's bad to know that the planet is stull full of mindless
retards who don't have the basic skills required to configure
a PC and a web browser so it doesn't shit itself and die
every time it gets an unexpected pop-up ad.

"Oooooh! Oooooh, I can't click on that, it might bite me!"
