Passenger dies in hit-run crash
Police say a drunken driver rear-ended another car, then drove home with
a fatally injured man sitting next to him.

By JOHN McDONALD
The Orange County Register

SANTA ANA - A man was arrested on suspicion of fleeing a traffic
accident in which a passenger in his car was killed, police said today.

The collision occurred at about 9:25 p.m. Tuesday at West Fifth Street
and Harbor Boulevard. A car carrying two men rear-ended a car driven by
a woman. She wasn't injured, and the other car left the scene, with the
airbags deployed and the windshield cracked.

Police said the hit-run driver went to his home, in the 1500 block of
Cedar Street in Anaheim. Once there, he was unable to rouse his
passenger, a 38-year-old man whose place of residence is unknown.

Anaheim paramedics declared the man dead.

The driver, Juan Galarza, 33, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular
manslaughter, drunken driving and felony hit-run. Police said he also
had a suspended driver's license.

I think ol' Juan had Juan too many! :))

Sounds almost too good to be true.
Anyone out there have user experience of these?

How much do they cost (in 1k lots) ?

Only supplier reference I could find for this was Mouser and they show
it as
"Discontinued/Replaced" with none in stock.
It's stocked by BD Enterprises for $.79 in quantities.

The 2SD1458 which is lower V and power, is stocked by BD Enterprises for
$.46 in quantities.

At those sort of prices I would imagine that the stock will last for quite
some time

That's kind of how things work: supply and demand govern the price.
It's better to have the part at high price than none available at any
price.

In this case, the prices are a lot cheaper than NTE, which are well over
a dollar each, no discount for quantity.

Very true.
I shall look out for them. If I'd have known of them, and for the right
price etc., I would probably have included them in a couple of recent
prodcuts already.
Had to make do with a zetex part in one (expensive but absolutely nowhere
near the 79 cents quoted for the 2SD above) and a 2SC2500 in another
(cheaper compromise).

If you have any more 'wierd' discretes please keep them coming.

You can get a lot of info by looking at the product selector guides that
some mfgrs have. They allow you to choose the category, like low noise,
high gain, or high current, low Vce(sat), etc. Different packages and
power levels, etc. One other important aspect is that if you use their
literature, generally the products you choose will still be in
production.

Many of the weird things I come up with have long been out of
production.
Right now, I'm trying to come with a satisfactory solution to a problem
I found in an old HP 721A power supply I got on Ebay. The circuit board
says "12-59" - 45 yrs old(!), and it uses germaniums except for the
diodes. The main filter cap was bad so I added another similar, and now
it's regulating a whole lot better, but still loses a dozen millivolts
when I put a 100mA load on it. The original 7V zener reference was
replaced with a 1N4735 which is only 6.2V, and it has only a milliamp or
so of current. I decided to add a 1N4148 in series with it to get it up
closer to 7V, and also add a bit of tempco. I'm also gonna check some
of the other 'lytics to see if they've gone bad.
