Washing machine turns the lights on in my house!

What certification are you talking about?
Can you refer me to the appropriate legislation?
What state are you in? Maybe this only applies in your state?
I've never heard of anything like this in NSW.

I keep forgetting to check!! I'll have a look tonight and post the
model. It might be a simpson. I probably should mention that I
worked on it recently replacing the burnt out drain pump and the
pressure switch.

Pity you did not tell us that first up.

I suppose there was no problem before you tampered illegally with the
machine.

If you thought just a little you should have realized YOU did
something
wrong and now you have a fair chance of a DEADLY fault.

Get an electrician before you need a Mortician.

Not paid attention, have you? You've suggested this before, IIRC, yet the
ACA does *NOT* cover electrical certification.

Have you tried any of the simple suggestions yet, such as plugging the
machine into a surge suppressor?
I haven't tried the surge protector yet because I don't have one but I tried
plugging it into a different power point and it did solve the problem.
Although I suspect this hasn't really proven anything because it just means
that the other powerpoint is on a different circuit to the lamp. The lamp
turned on at the end of the first fill and probably again during the cycle.

you need to test the plug giving trouble , almost sounds like it has
active and neutral reversed.

How would I test for that?

testers.. only a small amount

I'm not an electrician and often do things well beyond what I "should" do.
But if you need to ask this, I'd suggest you really should employ an
electrician with the right test equipment to go right through your house -
test and fix every power point.

Can I run a multimeter between the active/neutral and earth? The one that gives me a reading being the active? Or will this trigger
the safety switch?
