Washing machine turns the lights on in my house!

Every time I use my washing machine it manages to turn on all of the touch lamps in my house. Only the washing machine does this. I
can turn them off during the cycle but it will turn them back on a few minutes later. I think it is during a certain event such as
the motor starting or stopping. Is there any way to stop this?

Thanks,
Michael Culley

A surge suppressor (on the washing machine outlet) *may* help, but I'd
suggest you have a more serious problem with either the wiring on the
washing machine mains cord/plug, the mains outlet it's plugged into, or the
neutral bar in the fuse box. You probably should get a licenced sparky to
check it out.

Yes, don't wash your clothes.

I'd suggest that it's a voltage spike feeding back through the mains or even
a radiomagnetic pulse causing it. The touch lamp works at a high frequency
like a radio receiver and electrical noise may be enough to operate it. The
RF noise generated by the lamps can cause problems too.

you need the services of a competent electrician..

hi, maybe try to put a surge protector in the washing machine ., those 240
v ac ones you get for the computer s etc....and / or ones for the touch
lamps as well ?
dunno , worth a try.

I would think its some sort of emf in the 240v ?. so a filter of some
sort will sort it I expect , maybe some caps to ground in the plug ?

And I thought Internet fridges were smart ... :)

The washer just doesn't like working in the dark ;-)

Well, Im a sparky, but its a tad hard to tell whats happening without
actually testing it all. But it sounds like your Active and Neutral may be
crossed (cut and joint or in the GPO), which will feed back voltage through
the netural, which touch lamps rely on for the capacitive charge. Else, you
may have earth leakage from the washing machine (bad electrical joints
etc.), which could be affecting the lamps. As recommended, get a qualified
sparky in to have a look.

It could be that the triacs in your touch lamps are affected by dV/dt
switching, ie the triacs switch on when they experience a very fast
transient. If so, then you might consider installing a cheap surge
suppressor between your washing machine and GPO.

I keep forgetting to check!! I'll have a look tonight and post the model. It might be a simpson. I probably should mention that I
worked on it recently replacing the burnt out drain pump and the pressure switch.

Pity you did not tell us that first up.

I suppose there was no problem before you tampered illegally with the
machine.

If you thought just a little you should have realized YOU did something
wrong and now you have a fair chance of a DEADLY fault.

Get an electrician before you need a Mortician.

No, it did it long before I worked on it (I know, I should have mentioned that too :)

So how is it illegal to work on an appliance?

Have you tried any of the simple suggestions yet, such as plugging the
machine into a surge suppressor?

Not yet, I don't have any washing to do at the moment and have been very busy this week. I'll have to look at it next week. I think
I've got a powerboard with a surge suppessor. If that doesn't help I'll try using an extension cord and plugging it into a different
socket somewhere. I'll post the results next week.
