Unknown Telephone Component

[Zach Zaborny]

Upon retrieving parts from a broken (DTMF tone chip blown) touch-tone
telephone, I came across a weird component. It is a yellow tube, similar to
an electrolytic capacitor, with a lead coming from either side. It is
marked:

..56/10
250v-
1.50MKT
..56/10
88/7

The 88/7 may be the manufacture date, as a sticker on the phone's bottom
plate had the date "88/7/4".

Can anyone of you identify the component? Attempts at searching for it on
google got me nothing but lists of numbers and component numbers.

If you don't need it, hack it open with a hack saw. You'll see layers if
its a capacitor.

My guess is .56 mFd +- 10% at 250VDc max.

Specifically, a polyester (as in Mylar) film capacitor. They are handy
in analog circuits.

It is probably an 0.56uF 10% 250V capacitor. It would be located in
the ringer circuit where it must withstand up to 100VAC.

My guess is that it is 1.5uF, 250V polyester (MKT) capacitor. I can't
imagine why the .56/10 is repeated but I don't think this is the
capacitance value. If the phone has an ac electromagnetic ringer 1.5uF
is a fairly universal value in this part of the circuit.
