Mine was an EICO ST 40K 40 watt stereo amp kit. I still have it, but
mice built a nest in the multi section selector switch (between and around the
wafers) when it was stored in a basement many years ago and I have to clean it
up before I can use it again. Very strange place to build a nest. The tubes
(7591's) are priced out of this world when you can find them these days.

Unfortunately, it's these true stories, sadly, that give so much meaning
to the Dilbert cartoons, with thier PHBs.

Cincinnati Electronics had a program like that. I wrote an improved
test method and was informed that the test procedures were NATO approved
and couldn't be changed. A month later my boss got a $5000 dollar bonus
for my idea, and I was fired a couple weeks later so I couldn't say
anything about it.

Of course, he was a real "Company man" The engine in my truck blew on
the way to work in Cincinnati on I-75. It took me an hour and a half to
walk the rest of the way, and I was 15 minutes late, after wading
through snow drifts to my waist. It was around zero Fharenhit outside
and I was soaking wet and exhausted while he called everyone in the
dept. together to read me the riot act for being late, even though other
companies were shutting down because of the bad weather. He was yelling
that i should have climbed one of the snow fences and slide down to the
road below to call them and tell them that I would be late. What an
ass! When he said that were were going to go see HIS boss I laughed and
told him I insisted, because I couldn't wait to report his conduct.
Because of the severe weather I caught a sever case of the flu and was
unconscious for five days I lost over 20 pounds and couldn't walk for
months. One of my co workers managed to wake me for a couple minutes
the first day and I asked him to tell them i was sick, because my phone
was out. They fired me because I didn't report it personally. They
sent Western Union with a telegram to inform me that I was fired,
because my phone was still out, yet they still insisted that I should
have called them on the same phone, or walked a couple miles to the
nearest pay phone. The fact that my truck never ran again was beside
the point.

BTW a couple months before that I called a local country music radio
station from my RF screened room to request they play "Take this job and
shove it" and dedicate it to the second shift at CE. I dialed the PA
system as they started the intro and laid the radio on the mouthpiece.
The dedication went out, followed by a loud cheer all the way through
the half mile long production floor. The phone's extension number, if
that check, belonged to my boss. ;-)

It's always a mystery to me what triggers the FTC to act. For
instance, GM
made their own busses in the '40s-60s. They also made the engines for
the
busses. They wouldn't sell the engines to anyone who made busses.
FTC
called it a trust, and made them sell the engines to their bus making
competitors.

I think there was more of a trust-busting attitude back then. Seems
like it's all but gone today. They're letting Union Oil and (?) merge,
and Chevron and Texaco merge so it's just getting to be like it was when
Rockefeller owned the whole lot.

I was talking to our acct rep (management) from SBC, and he says that
when they merge with AT&T, they are pretty certain they're going back to
the ol' AT&T name. He says that most of the employees never did like
SBC, and still think of it as Pacific Bell. He said that when the
merger happens, it'll be almost like the pre-breakup days.

Tektronix made their own special IC', CRT's and transformers, and
wouldn't
sell them to competitors (is this true?) And AFAIK, FTS left them
alone.

AT&T used to own Western Electric and it was pretty much like that,
vertically integrated, with raw mat'ls going in one end and finished
products out the other. Like your digestive system ;-)

Schlumberger owned Fairchild, who sold to anyone, and Heath who bought
mostly Fairchild parts, and FTC broke them up.

And now, the baby Bells have merged, and mixed with their competition,
creating fewer companies than there was during the hay day of the
"trust",
and it is a really good thing.

Good thing? Pure speculation. I know people who still bitch about the
breakup, as if not breaking up would've stopped all the changes that
have happened, such as cell phones and the Internet. They can speculate
all they want about how it would've been, but that's all it is:
speculation.

Thanks Jeff. At least someone started making real 7591's rather than
rebased 6L6's sold as 7591's. I see the 5AR4 is still available from several
different manufacturers including the original Mullard's at $99.00 each! Newer
replacements are a lot cheaper, but I should convert it to solid state
rectification. The 5AR4's don't last long at all in that amp. I'll get to it
sooner or later. Thanks again.
